Australia
« on: 30 Nov 2008, 21:14 »

So, I didn't see this as a topic yet, kinda surprising.

Anyway, I dunno how many people have seen this yet so I'll just tell you two things:
->This is a very very long movie(comparatively)
->Hugh Jackman definitely deserves that People Magazine Sexist Man award. If I were of the female persuasion, I would hunt him down and jump his bones.

They said it was an okay film. Not the greatest film of the year, but a decent watch.

I've a friend who went to see the Broadway version of The Full Monty about a dozen times because Hugh Jackman got naked in it.

Hugh Jackman was pretty good, considering the last movie i saw him in was X-men 3.

Hugh Jackman starring + Baz Luhrmann directing = potential worst movie ever.

Hugh Jackman is orright but Nicole Kidman hasn't done much since Dead Calm & Bangkok Hilton in 1989 and Baz Luhrmann is an inexperienced, over-rated hack who makes awful cringe-fests.

Are you saying that Moulin Rouge did not make your heart soar and your brain sing? Is that what you are telling us?

I've only seen about two minutes of Moulin Rouge, but it was without question among the worst two minutes of cinema I have ever seen.

I have every intention of seeing this movie on the big screen.  It will probably suck, but man oh man Hugh Jackman is nice to look at.

Every film Hugh Jackman is expected to carry more or less on his own is a disaster.

Also, fuck you guys, I was utterly entranced by Baz's wacky modern take on Romeo & Juliet. He got a real tour de force performance out of John Leguizamo.

Strictly Ballroom is good. Romeo and Juliet is good. Two good films is not such a bad record.

But when Luhrmann's bad, he's awful.

Man, Romeo + Juliet is completely visually stunning, and a whole ton of fun.  It's a really good movie.  Maybe not great, but really quite good.  I haven't seen anything else he's done, and I can't tell how I feel about the looks of this.

I mean, it's a western, which is appealing.  But the commercials make it look like it's part western, part romance, part war movie, part Indiana Jones.  Which doesn't sound that appealing.

You can go ahead and defend the one movie he did that was any good (and honestly, I'm lukewarm about that one at best, but I'm tired of arguing about it), but it won't do any good until I'm allowed to take my rightful vengeance for being forced to sit through Moulin Rouge.

Man, I still can't believe I didn't even get makeouts after that. Christ.

Personally I love Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge. Ewan McGregor has the most lovely singing voice, oh my goodness. Plus the film is wacky and out there and an all-around good time.

Ewan McGregor is the most awesome thing since Liam Neeson.

Others may or may not disagree.

But anyway, on with Australia, the ACTUAL topic of the thread ! =P

Everything I've heard about this movie suggests that it attempted to be a big, over-the-top, emotional epic and wound up just feeling bloated.

Personally, I didn't feel like it was bloated simply because, though it tried to do everything, it didn't try to do everything at once. Each part of the movie has its own distinct feel to it. Again though this is a long movie, not many have runtimes 165 minutes long. It was not a great movie, by any means, but it is pretty good. But pretty good paired with fun visuals and marvelous(my opinion!) style makes for a movie I really enjoyed and will definitely see it again.

You're writing it wrong. It's not Australia, it's Straya.

I find it endlessly amusing that Australians constantly create and add to their own mythology. What with the fake languages, the fake killer animals who prey on tourists, the fake etymology, etc.

Such shenanigans are unacceptable.

Or we let 'em set camp up near them billabongs and wait for the bunyip to catch 'em! =D

Every review of the film Australia should just be one sentence that says "Aboriginal child stops stampeding herd of cattle by raising hand".

Um, spoilers.
