Local Bands
« on: 09 Sep 2008, 23:25 »

Hey,

If you're like me and live in shit-ass nowhere (horray Nova Scotia, Canada), you really gotta work to pimp out your favorite local bands.
Since this place is full of music keeners, I figured it would be a great place for everyone to pimp out your favorite local artists.  Now I'm not talking about if you live in like... california or boston or something, because they have their own full blown underground scene.  I mean if you're in a small city or town or something.

Since local bands like this don't have the population to draw on, and dont always get the exposure they deserve, lets give em a boost and pimp out your favorite local bands here!  show us a few of your favorite songs/vids and make us buy their shit!

Here we go, to start off, here are my favorite local bands!

Wintersleep:
Currently my favorite.  They are no "The Tea Party", but solid catchy songs are just fun to listen to.
Band website: http://www.wintersleep.com/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-iW0zL2LI0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ45UNanMhE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3umk2gRYTM (not a real music video, just the song with slideshow)

Joel Plaskett
An east coast canadian rock music icon, unfortunatlly never seemed to get out of the east coast.  Very fun and down to earth lyrics.
band website: http://www.joelplaskett.com/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgMHloXot68
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFZdNCUguio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXMvj5fiJYg (lo-fi live recording  :-( )

In-flight safety
Some people think they sound like Coldplay. I guess I can hear it a bit, but they have put out a good number of solid songs with their own sound. nice alt-pop-rock kinda thing going.
band website: http://www.inflightsafety.ca/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZISV82K8bI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrWqOd8ui30

Rebekah Higgs
Very nice voice.  Live concerts are interesting when she has to do all the parts herself. soft indie-folk kind of music. very nice and soothing.
Band website: http://www.rebekahhiggs.com/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz7c_7XLAHM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UtIu_vRMf4 (lo-fi live recording)

Hey Rosetta
More bands need a violin and cello in their standard repertoire. Ok, so I cheated a bit on this one.  Not from my hometown, but another small east-coast Canadian city (even capital cities are small on the east coast  :-P ).
band website: http://www.heyrosetta.com/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wunIir9J2Z8 (live and missing some drums.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r_yiloik0A (lo-fi live recording. can hardly hear the guitar but this was the only version of this song I could find)

I have seen three of these acts live, I keep missing chances to go see Wintersleep and Hey Rosetta! was through a while back.

Plaskett in particular is quite easily one of Canada's best songwriters.

I only know about Wintersleep on that list. I saw them open for Wolf Parade and kind of wish the line-up had been the other way around. They're awesome!

Fiasco (http://www.myspace.com/fiasconewyork)

Math punk, I guess.  They play with Titus Andronicus, Double Dagger, So So Glos, Deerhunter...

They just got featured on Pitchfork TV for their first music video, which I'm in! (In the big picture at the end)

Most of the good bands around here broke up 3 or 4 years ago. I have included the surrounding cities because my city really sucks and the other two cities are very close anyways.

You Me and the Machine
http://www.ymatm.youdonotcompute.com/
 http://www.myspace.com/youmeandthemachine
I went to high school with all 4 of the members. Had classes with 3 of them and went to college with one of them.  I think they rad.

Some Other Influence
http://www.myspace.com/someotherinfluence
I have seen them several times. Two of the members went to the same school as I did. They have been rocking it out since 2002.

Red Trakpants
http://www.myspace.com/redtrakpantsband
These guys are weird, but probably the weirdest coolest guys ever.

Vacuity
http://www.vacuity.net/
http://www.myspace.com/vacuity
I have seen this band twice. Shot photographs for them once. Awesome band!

Sister Amadeus
 http://www.myspace.com/sisteramadeus
They have been broke for several years now, but I still find myself listening to ep and going to their myspace page.

Noise(formally All Cut Up)
Many people have asked me why I have an "All Cut Up" pin on my bag. This is the reason why. I also worked with the lead singer in a grocery store. This band rocks my socks.
 http://www.myspace.com/allcutup

Single Threat
Broken up. But still rad all the same.
 http://www.myspace.com/singlethreat

Jen Militia
Also did photography for this band. Amazing! I also have a slight crush on the bass player.
  http://www.myspace.com/jenmilitia

Danny Michel
  http://www.myspace.com/dannymichel

Mandippal
http://www.myspace.com/mandippal
I first heard this guy at an acoustic show. He played a cover of Snow Patrol's Run.

Well, living in Austin there's so many local bands I can't keep track of them all, except for the big names like Explosions in the Sky, Okkervil River, Spoon, Voxtrot. But when I was at school in Utah there was a really good indie pops/rock band called Kid Theodore I saw once or twice, and they are pretty awesome. Even though their recordings aren't necessarily as spectacular as their live performances, in which each one of them (except the drummer) is constantly hopping back and forth between instruments, even pulling out an upright string bass for a couple songs, handing out random percussive instruments for the crowd to bang on during others, and being generally energetic and fun enough to get even the most stoic of hipster crowds clapping their hands and stomping their feet, here is the band's Myspace:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=33345808

I recommend checking out "Call of the Wild," "Lonely Angel" and "Os Passarinhos" to get a good view of their stylistic range. I'm pretty sure one of tne of the dudes went to Brazil or Portugal on his mission for the LDS church, which explains the fascination with Portuguese.

I don't know if you're actually poking fun, or just being as droll as I was, but since it's the internet, and for the sake of clarity, I will say that I was mimicking the old "The Pavements" joke. Or maybe you're just being very contrary. I can respect that.

Penny Whiskey is great if you like Celtic music, folk music, or songs about drinking, or humourous music. I saw them (and talked with them a bit) yesterday, and it was great.

Dave Viterna and New Rage is...well, blues and rock. Typical sound, but done very well.

Awesome! keem em coming!  this is a good response so far!

mother falcon was awesome. man i LOVE string/bow instruments.
The Non was pretty good too. reminded me somehow of RCHP with a dash of jeff healy / stevie ray vaughan style blues and some Explosions in the Sky for good measure.

try to mention where they are from too (unless youre afraid of creepy internet stalkerage).  Its one of those things i always want to know about bands for no particular reason.

maybe give a little description or toss out a few genres which they dabble in (i know your magical-awesome band can't be boxed into genres but generalizations are time-savers! ;p)

also, try to keep it to SMALL towns and SMALL cities.
Like... if your city/town has over 800,000 people in it, it is not a small town anymore.  They have their own music scene they can use to get publicity

This is for all the SMALL town bands who still haven't made it big yet :).
regardless, keep em comin!

Everyone always says RHCP for some reason. I guess cause the bass player is the best part of the band?

Brides are pretty ballin'. They're post-punky and lots of fun.

The Racoon Wedding is some straight up rock and fuckin' roll courtesy of some fine gentlemen from Brantford, Ontario. Among their ranks is Tim Ford, proprietor of The Ford Plant and former member the spectacular band the Vermicious Knid.

Jordaan Mason & the Horse Museum is a wonderful band. Jordaan's songwriting style kind of reminds me of Jeff Mangum but perhaps a little more delicate. I saw them the other day Jordaan sang the song "Stranger" (which you can hear on their myspace) without a microphone and everyone in the room sang along and it was magical.

I saw all of these bands live over the past four days at a little thing called Kazoo! Fest in Guelph. It was the most fun I've had in a long time.

Im from KC and there is a really good band from around here, even though they did take down their best song from there. Anyways, the two the have up are still pretty good. The singer and piano player moved to Cali to enroll in a music school though, so they arent putting anything new out until summer.

The second video down has their best song, but it has some shitty quality and is just a 43 sec blip.

Madahoochi - check out videos at www.youtube.com/jtcbrown, or check them out on ITunes / CD Baby / Pandora.  I'm getting ready to put them on Last.FM too, once I figure it out.

Scott Rockwood is a guitar legend in the making, I'd put his licks up against nearly any current non-legendary guitarist - only Buckethead, Santana, Vai, Vaughn, and a handful of others outdo him, if you ask me.

And Shawn Hartung is simply fracking gorgeous - check out the videos for "Choose To Lose", "Nuclear Man", or "Burn the Money" for some eye candy and a sampling of her amazing vocals.

Katherine Williams (Crimson Heart Replica) in Posh Magazine.

http://www.myspace.com/crimsonheartreplica

Er, yeah. If you could fuse Emo and R&B, this would be it. If you told her that, she'd claw off your face. The "individualists" in Jamaica are terribly scene, and it's really sad. She sounds nice though, but I kinda shake my head at anyone who says "I'm a tattooed nonconformist. This is not a fashion statement, it's a death wish. (You would) usually see me with a Mohawk, oversized shades, skinny jeans and my chucks (Converse). Oh, and I never leave home without smudged black eyeliner. Sometimes I even wear it when I'm just chilling at home. I have 'dress-up-itis'. I love putting outfits together. Makes me feel like a super hero. or villain when I go all out and put together an outfit that just reeks of my personality." [link]

So late on this...  I saw Tone twice wayyyy back, around 1999-2000.  Once opening for GYBE, once for Foetus.  They are pretty awesome.  The first time I saw them they had 4 guitars 1 bass & 1 drum kit; I think they’d added another drummer and bassist the next time.  I’d love to see them again if they’re touring soon.
