Hey everyone, I'm looking for some good Doom stuff, you know the usual, heavy bass and slow riffs.

So far, I've already checked out...

Goatsnake
Burning Witch
Candlemass
Saint Vitus
Black Sabbath

Any good bands that are essential, apart from these?

Then get into Acid King, Zoroaster, YOB, Ufomammut, Earth, Cathedral, Sons of Otis, and Grand Magus, and you should be good for a while.

Do you have a preference as to subgenres? I usually group sludge in with doom, do you want any of those recommendations as well?

Just off the top of my head, which is less occupied than usual for some reason, try Katatonia (early stuff, specifically Brave Murder Day, Dance of December Souls might count as well, never heard it), My Dying Bride (I like "Like Gods of the Sun", but don't listen to them much, so I could be missing a gem), How Like a Winter (very similar to MDB, only have one EP and an s/t out), and Type O Negative (some of it is doomy, at least. Specifically thinking of "World Coming Down" and "Bloody Kisses").

Electric Wizard (Get Come My Fanatics... first, Dopethrone isn't as good as everyone makes it out to be.)
Sleep (Anything is good, but bear in mind that Jerusalem and Dopesmoker are essentially the same album, with Jerusalem being a truncated version, also they're one song albums.)
Melvins (Bullhead and Lysol.)
Orthodox (I only have Gran Poder, but I recommend that wholeheartedly, excellent drone doom.)
Sahg (Traditional doom fronted by members of black metal bands, and it works surprisingly well, get everything.)
Bongzilla (I only have Gateway, but it's pretty sludgy and awesome, get that.)
The Angelic Process (Not sure what to call these guys, bar drone doom, but you need to listen to Weighing Souls With Sand, because it is literally the thickest album you'll ever hear, you'll understand when you try it. Absolutely amazing.)
ISIS (All their old EPs before Celestial are pretty damn doomy and heavy as a motherfucker.)
Neurosis (I hesitate to dump them in a doom thread, because they're so much more than that, but they're essential. Start with Times of Grace, then go backwards for heavier Neurosis, and forwards for softer Neurosis.)

Isis (as mentioned before) Cult of Luna, Agalloch, Katatonia in their old days, Daylight Dies and The Morningside. I guess Opeth has some old doom, but I've never been a fan of that side of them.

Also, Novembre, Rosetta, and I guess Jesu would be worth looking into too.

You need to listen to Reverend Bizarre. True doom metal, no stoner influence, no classical instruments, no nothing but the purest doom.

My Dying Bride is a pretty cool band. I spun them back when I listened to a lot of metal.

Torche are kinda like doom metal mixed with pop music.

Regardless they're totally fucking amazing and you should listen to them.

Paradise Lost's early stuff, like the Gothic album, is great Doom Metal.
There last two albums are also pretty good.

Skepticism (my fav funeral doom of recent)
Supercontinent (very Isis-y)
Swallow the Sun (doom with some melodic death influences)

Well, there's always Sunn O))). Doesn't get much heavier/slower/louder/apocalyptic than Sunn O))). The album Black One is actually pretty terrifying when listened to at a high enough volume.

Funny how it's the early versions of most bands that fit the type of music you are looking for.

I know most of their stuff doesn't fit what we're talking about here due to their obvious stoner rock leanings, plus you probably already have their stuff anyway, but there is a few Kyuss cuts such as Molten Universe, Apothecaries' Weight and their Into the Void cover that bear mentioning.

Also, you guys are damn lucky someone mentioned Sleep already, or else this post would have just been a

repeatedly screaming DRAGONAUT in successively larger scrolling fonts.

Kyuss's cover of Into The Void is my favorite song ever. It is perfect in every way, including a lot of ways that most songs couldn't be perfect in even if they were done perfectly.

Pentagram. Some of there older stuff is more like 70's hard rock than metal, but they have some doomier (in the Sabbath vein) tracks and they're recommended if you like Sabbath and Deep Purple.

In the vein of Pentagram, has someone mentioned Witchcraft? They are very old-school in their doominess, I've heard them described as sabbath with more LSD.

Witchcraft are not really "Sabbath with more LSD" but it is true that they are very Sabbath-y. If you wanted to listen to "Sabbath with more LSD" I'd recommend Sons of Otis. They're slower than Sabbath but they put the vocals through some trippy echo effects and every now and then add in a some space sounds (a la Acid Mothers Temple). The overall effect is one of "wow these guys are irredeemably spun out of their skulls" ... more so than most doom bands, even.
