Gossip Girl

Fucking Great episode tonight, but I hate the midseason break that they always do around winter. Shit seems poised to go off soon though, more than it already has at least.

Fuck I love this show.

I saw the first episode of this show when it aired on free-to-air here last week. What's with the guys in the show and their hideous and ridiculous scarves? Is this the new fashion or something?

Man, I embarassed the hell out of myself because of this show.

Somehow, I didn't realize that it was anything besides books until a few months ago.

Now my injured pride won't let me watch it.

That and the fact that it pretty much sounds like the O.C. in New York (which was basically just Dawson's Creek with lots of money and so forth).

Ok enough of all your hipster shame.

My guilty pleasure, Johnny I will kill your family if this gets leaked, is Gossip Girl.  I watched it once cause I just saw Accepted and had a total boner for Blake Lively, then ended up watching the whole thing.  I think its cause Im a poor boy that want to live in Manhattan so it kinda speaks to me.

So good. At least once I got over the fact that Ed Westwick must've gotten a major crick in his neck from shooting this one. Lily's secret was exactly what I thought it would be, but they played it nicely in that it (mostly) didn't happen the way I thought it might.

I think the guilty part of guilty pleasure might even be disappearing. Maybe.

I've never watched more than 2 minutes of the show, but if you could clear something up for me... are these kids supposed to be in high school?  Do high school kids now go to bars and drink martinis?

No, not really. Or, if they do, it's because they've been reading and are trying to emulate this escapist fantasy bullshit. Horrible show/books about nonexistent, amoral socialites ≠ reality. Sorry kids!

Gossip Girl's attraction really has very little (at least for me) to do with how close to reality it may or may not be, or how down to earth and "real" the characters are.

Umm, what? My friends in high school did this shit. Bars are a lot more fun when you aren't supposed to be in them, and every teenager wants to pretend they're "mature." I dunno where you're from, but in real cities people do this.

Yeah, even in a tiny town in northern Norway, friends of mine would go to bars before they turned 18 (legal drinking age for things under 22% ABV, 20 for things above), let alone 20 (the age limit at most bars here, except for a few ones where it's 18 and a few where it's higher), and at least attempt to act "adult" and they'd get away with it, with fake IDs and stuff. It's not exactly unheard of. Not that they'd sip martinis etc, but that probably has more to do with the culture/society itself.

Ah, well that explains the confusion! Faulkner was a writer from the early-mid 1900s who was immensely gifted and wrote with an incredibly complex, often stream of consciousness style which is pretty accurately parodied in that article. He wrote 'The Sound and the Fury' which might be familiar sounding. Anyway, it would be a pretty confusing article for one not acquainted with the man's work.

Not for me. I think the pleasure of the show is its vapid, idiotic, overwrought, heavy handed, clumsy, kitsch infested and predictable direction, plotting, acting and writing. It's so bad it's enjoyable. Watching it is like wallowing in filth but somehow it makes it fun (and, often unintentionally I think, funny). I mean, no one actually take the show seriously, right? No one enjoys it for its production values as far as I can tell. It's utterly trashy and that's why it's fun.

I disagree with the whole "so bad it's enjoyable" thing. I think it's a seriously compelling show. and if you wade through the hyperbole, you find some real high school stuff: worrying about getting into your dream college, feeling the limelight shine on your best friend, having feelings for your ex, wanting to date your older brother's friend and maybe getting close (cough), wanting so badly to be a successful artist but not being taken seriously because of your youth, not trusting your parents and wanting to break free from them despite all that they've given you, having problems with your body, whatever.

yeah, sure, I watch it because it's awesome to laugh and talk about with my friends. I'm not arguing that it's an accurate portrayal of high school. I'm just saying don't immediately write it off as being completely unrealistic just because they're rich and go to bars.

also did anyone else notice that blair was the big spoon this week?

All those things you mentioned about high school may be actual things some high schoolers go through but that doesn't make their overabundance and exploitation via a cheesy script poorly read by mediocre-at-best actors any less cliche.

Nope, you're not alone. I often find myself laughing when I'm not supposed to at things that are over the top or just weird acting and all that, but I actually do care about (some of) the characters and/or their relationships as well.

ETA: Okay, so a post was deleted, but my point still stands; that it's not entirely bad and cheesy and trashy, like a lot of people seem to make it out to be. It shows that you can be serious without taking yourself too seriously, I guess, and I like that. Yes, there are some less than stellar actors (and also some I really like), but even most of them have had their moments, and yes, the script can be cheesy, but that gives me something to laugh about, and sometimes it's great.

Yeah, it's fun to trash on gossip girl, but the one good thing I can say about it is... hey, at least it's not The Hills!  I really have no idea how anyone can watch that show, it makes me acutely uncomfortable just to watch those lifeless girls and their completely unabashed non-acting (yes, it's scripted!).

I've had to watch about a season of this due to both my girlfriend's and sister's obsession with it. And after a season's worth of episodes, the only strong opinion I've formed is: Chuck wears terrible, horrible suits.

Conversely my girlfriend got me to record the first episode of season 2 which has just started on cable here in Aus and even though I was nonplussed by the actual content of the show I believe Chuck Bass is now my fashion idol. Especially the white suit he rocks (previously posted in the fashion thread, if I am not wrong)

The cultural impact of the style on that show really is huge. People have been buying dresses that blair wore in an episode for their prom dress, the "prepster" look is coming back in a big way, etc.

Which is frustrating, because I've been pursuing that look for like 3 years now and this means I have to buy a whole new fucking wardrobe.

Yeah, it seemed to me that people never really stopped dressing "preppy." I guess this is just sort of accentuating it or making it more noticeable?

The only good thing about Dexter is Michael C. Hall, and he's quite good. The show around him is just awful.

Dexter reminds me on Monk in that they're both shows about weirdo neurotic detective types but their respective neurosis are basically what is intended to carry the whole entire show in lieu of quality plot and acting and writing in general, as well as serving as comic relief and that in addition to being pretty much the only thing which defines the character in any way. In other words, I find it gimmicky and irritating (and Michael C. Hall is just as cloying a lot of the time as Tony Shaloub).

Not a strong showing, all around.
