So many games
« on: 13 Nov 2008, 00:12 »

I play a lot games. Not as much as much or as obsessively as others, but I think I'm on the shallow end of the bell curve.

I have a backlog of games from the glut of Fall '07, and Fall '08 is even crazier.

Mirror's Edge comes out today, Left 4 Dead and Tomb Raider: Underworld in a week. Then there's Quantum of Solace and EndWar and Prince of Persia. I haven't finished Dead Space. My friend and I are two-thirds of the way through Gears of War 2 co-op. I have Fallout 3 still in the shrinkwrap on my shelf. I haven't even downloaded On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness episode 2 yet. Hell, I haven't even finished GTA4, though that's more due to lack of interest than anything. I'm working through Tomb Raiders Legend and Anniversary from Gamefly and I've only played one game of Civ Revolution.

It's good that I'm not particularly interested in Fable 2 and Call of Duty 5  and Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3.

Console selection doesn't go back 20+ years like it does on the PC; be glad you don't have to worry about thousands of good games you've missed ;)

Chill with the PC evangelism, man.

In any case, consoles have been around since the late 70s, dude.

Also, I've been a PC gamer for over 20 years, but I'm versatile enough that I have no need of console bigotry.

How interesting you mention all this.

I bought GTA4 3 months ago, and even though I already finished the game, I just couldn't coupe with the people calling all day trying to befriend you. I think it was a shallow attempt at longevity, but backfired tremendously.

I don't usually sell back the games I purchase, mostly because i seldom buy them without careful consideration; I'm considering it on GTA4 because my local store is giving me 45 dollars for it.

It makes it hard for me to sell it because I keep thinking the game has something bigger to offer me, specially since most of the achievements are locked (I only have something like 350 points out of 1000). But Liberty city is one of the smallest cities I've seen in a GTA game, and I'm noticing this trend of games to have a gazilion  ~5pt achievements.

As of late, I've been thinking that the achievements system can be a sketchy way to measure a games success with the player. The more achievements you accomplish, the more immersed, addicted, or well designed the title was.
Of course there ought to be notable exceptions, where you just get points for doing ordinary stuff... in any case, is that way of punctuation a really negative one?

If I sell GTA4 would be to purchase Gears of War 2, since a friend of mine cannot stop talking about the horde mode.

Do you guys think selling GTA4 for 45 dlls is a good choice?
Is it sound to sell it so I can get GoW2? I'm thinking GoW2 may not give the limitless hours that GTA4 can, but perhaps it can give what it has with more quality to it?

Sell it; $45 is a pretty decent deal. Of course, I'm not a huge fan of GTA in general, but from the sound of it, you're not a huge fan of GTA4. If you haven't felt compelled to give it another go by now who's to say that you will in the future? The number of good alternatives will only increase as time goes by.

When was the last one...Teh Geek Lord?  Is he still around?

Whatever.  To at least show solidarity for PC's, I'm going to complain about having too many console games to play (Fable, Fallout, Gears, Left 4 Dead; Mirror's Edge and Dead Space later on) and also say I'm getting the new NWN2 expansion.

Thanks Alex; yea, you're right: I'm not a GTA4 fan, and you are spot on about not giving it another go.

As soon as I finished the game, I started a new one, trying to be more thorough this time, but I stopped after less than an hour.

Aww, fuck it. I'm selling it today. Besides, the only thing I kept doing in GTA4 was blowing stuff up and keeping it going in high wanted levels.
I never cared for stunt jumps or finding the birds.

PC gamer here, too... but it's not some elitist thing, it's just a preference of mine. I like to be able to mod my games, and I like playing mouse & keyboard.

As for the OP... there are a lot of games, but not that many "I MUST PLAY THIS!" games. I'm happy with Fallout 3. Found a cool mod that lets you repair your custom guns with the pieces they were assembled with (rock-it launcher with a leaf blower, dart gun with toy car, etc...)

Geek Lord thinks Obama is a Marxist.

I don't know how I missed that, but holy crap.  Reminds of a website I used to send nasty e-mails to in middle school, http://www.exposingsatanism.org.  They even said John Hagee was the devil because he believed Jews had the right idea.  All sorts of crazy crap about how the New World Order plans on exterminating 80% of the population, etc.

I spent a few hours today trying to finish the last 25% of the the GTA4 story, but got sidetracked by trying to get achievements.

Played the first mission of Mirror's Edge last night, but haven't gotten back to it. Heard it was quite short, possibly disappointingly so.

After GTA4, need to finish farming Tomb Raider: Legend achievements and join the 10k gamerscore club.

Skipped Fable 2 and Mirror's Edge, might come back to them later. I'm really not interested in World at War, Endwar, or Tomb Raider. The games I am planning to buy before the end of the year are Left 4 Dead and Persona 4, and possibly Prince of Persia.

I was feeling like I'd be positively overwhelmed by all the games, but since the Left 4 Dead demo came out, I pretty much forgot about everything else.

one thing: money
every game that looks pretty damn good costs 40-65 euro or more (i live in ireland by the way) and i haven't money to buy one yet, could anyone suggest a game for when funds are available? just name it, doesn't matter if it's out in less than a month or two for the 360.

Hi Cyanin!
Well, do you mind narrowing down the question?
What system do you own?

If you have the xbox 360, and are short on cash, I would advice you to get previous titles that are masterpieces but no longer cost the full price.
In my case for instance, I just recently acquired Bioshock ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioshock ) at 30 dlls used, the collectors edition (sweetness) ; In Europe things might be a little different, but it is worth the shot.

In the same line of thought I think The orange box is a pretty safe bet ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Orange_Box ) .
And Mass Effect ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_effect ) .

If you meant what NEW game do I recommend, you have a few choices:

Gears of War 2 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gears_of_war_2 ) is a very solid title, albeit a little cliche, that has a tremendous online value, and a very interesting single player proposal. If you like third person shooters, that would be it.

Left 4 Dead ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left_4_dead ) is one of the forums favourites, and there's a tread around of people exchanging xbox dogtags, so the online comunity is pretty solid. It is a first person shooter centered on 4 people surviving the zombie apocalypse. It relies highly in cooperative action, and  the single campaign is almost not existing. If you are a social player, this is your game; if you are a loner on the other hand, it might not be for you. In any case give it a try, there's a free demo at live! marketplace.

I DO NOT recommend Mirror's Edge ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirrors_edge ) the game is really short and there are some inherent flaws, like the lack of fluid runs or multiple paths (for more info, go to giantbomb.com and see what they have to say about it, I mostly agree with what they say)

Lastly, if you are talking about something new AND cheap , I think Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjo-Kazooie:_Nuts_%26_Bolts ) is as good as they come, the game is really eclectic, so you might want to check some reviews before doing anything (again, there's giantbomb, g4tv as well) but is NEW and only 40 dlls ( Hope they respect the price in Ireland)
Also, in the new&cheap category Viva Pinata 2 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viva_Pinata_2 ) is another 40 dll contender, its a simulator where you have to take care of your pinatas, very much as if you were in a zoo or a garden. Take care of them being careful about predators, giving them special facilities, and the works.
Is not for everyone, nonetheless is cheap, new and novel. Again, I recommend you to give it a careful read in a review site of your choice.

Hope any of those recommendations help,
Cheers.

hey, cheers for the reply, i've got the 360, yeah, price is generally pretty good over here, ah bioshock, damn good game, enjoyed it a lot, you get some good replay time out of it too.
yeah, i have the first gears of war, great game, bit glitchy from time to time, and damn short for my taste, still great though, i'm mostly into third person shooters, or RPG's, i've had my eye on gta4 for a while, a mate of mine has it and i'd like to follow the story for a change instead of random grenade/ police car/ motorbike rampages, fun as they are, they can get old until you freshen em up with some explosions.
i'm also interested in getting back to the final fantasy series, dropped it after X-2 due to obvious reasons, any suggestions on a good one for that?
cheers for the suggestions so far.

just one last thing actually, left 4 dead anything like dead rising? liked that game, cept the controls were just...different. is it more shooting/moving/talking based?

besides the zombies, it's nothing like Dead Rising.

and Final Fantasy? well, if you stopped after X-2 then you really didn't miss much unless you count all the remakes/spin-offs that came out on the DS.
if you still have a PS2, go get XII. some people hated it, some loved it. i fall into the latter category.

In the same line of thought I think The orange box is a pretty safe bet ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Orange_Box ) .

I'd just like to add, The Orange Box is a must-have for PC gaming if you don't already own Half-Life 2. For $40 USD you get Portal, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, Peggle Extreme (a 10 stage Peggle demo, which itself isn't a very deep game but it's a fun 20 minute diversion.) and the Source SDK (including a map editor, model viewer, and system for making lip sync and action scripts for the games' character models).

Plus you get access to literally dozens of completely free games built around the Source engine. (There are a lot out there that aren't hosted through Steam, as well.) One really popular one is Garry's Mod; you can take full advantage of the engine's physics system by building anything you want. Version 9 is free, but version 10 is a gigantic step forward for the $10 price.

If you liked the comic, you'll probably like the game.  I wound up playing Episode 1 in one straight session, but I still haven't gotten around to Episode 2, what with finals and all.
