Good postrock bands?
« on: 15 Dec 2008, 14:45 »

So I recently picked up the two Bear vs Shark albums and I just can't stop listening to them, so if you guys have any more great postrock bands in that vein I'd appreciate hearing em.

Another thread looking for post-rock recommendations.

And again, I point them to http://www.thesirenssound.com

So, are all those sirensound posts albums that have recently come out? Because there are so damn many, it is surprising. They don't have anything on any bands I have looked up, though. Do they only do unknown bands?

They don't do really well known bands, becasue of copyright issues and the fact that you can probably buy the more well known albums for yourself.

Oh yeah, top right, there is a link to "MONO". Get all of it. ALL OF IT! They're the best. There's my recommendation.
Also, in situations like this, I often find that this is appropriate:
SLINT

Pelican is post-rock/metal, but their first two albums and their self-title EP are quite excellent.  Best is their first full length, Australasia, which makes excellent use of crushing riffs and major keys.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! is quite an excellent band, as is Sigur Ros.  They are famous for a reason.

Well, originally there was a blogspot, which got taken down for unknown reasons and then squatted on by someone from 4chan.  So a lot of what's going on right now is him re-posting all the stuff that was lost when his blog died.  But he does post a large amount of stuff, including the bigger acts.  There's also some math/indie/stoner stuff...if it's vaguely post-rock in some really far-fetched way, he will probably put it up.

Bear vs Shark

Dogg they are post-hardcore, not post rock. Big difference. If you want post hardcore, all I can say is spin drive like jehu.

Also I've written numerous posts in these types of threads on good post rock bands. Here and here are my recommendations. If you want something different, my newest obsession is Neil on Impression. Very melodic and flowly music. But a tad busy. Oh well, its never overwhelmingly busy. Perhaps one day I'll just write a big fat thing about post-rock music and just post that.

And SirensSound is the best post-rock blog. Ever.

I love how no one noticed this but Sean.

As far as post-hardcore goes Sean's got it down.  Drive Like Jehu are great (you might also want to check out Hot Snakes if you like that), Hot Cross, At the Drive-In are pretty alright, Fucked Up are pretty awesome, as are North of America.

So there, some starters.

Mono, particularly You Are There.  And of course the classic Explosions in the Sky.  Anything by them is great, but I particularly like All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone.

I consider bands like Rodan and June of 44 to be the point where post-rock and post-hardcore intersect. Both bands are a little Slinty and had the same guitarist in it, but if you enjoy intricate and soft-to-intricate and loud guitar-ing and semi-screamy vocals, you will do fine with both bands.

In the mid to late 90s everyone did call June of 44 and such bands "post-rock".

Why do we need to invent new genres all the time.  June of 44 and Mono can both be post-rock in the same way that the Beatles and the Stones can both be rock.  Jeez.  What's next, are we going to retroactively call Slint "post-metal"?

Actually, that's a genre already, if you can believe it.

Explosions in the Sky, while a pretty mainstream suggestion, is a pretty important one, too. Check them out.

Cue, Mogwai, If These Trees Could Talk, Red Sparowes, The American Dollar, Parabstruse, and Pg. Lost are all interesting. Give them a shot, and if you need help finding them, PM me.

Both post-rock and prog are pretty nebulous terms anyway? The sheer stylistic range of bands that fit into either genre makes it a pretty moot point?

Not at all.  They're pretty firmly rooted in Classical music, whether intentionally or not.  They use very traditional Classical structure, melody and counterpoint and such.
