1300: Am I an awful person?
« on: 22 Dec 2008, 08:22 »

Okay, so am I the only person who read the first couple panels of the strip and got REALLY excited? I really, really want Martin and Dora to break up -- not so much because I don't approve of them or am a Martin/Faye person, but because I want to see the drama (and carnage' actually, mostly the carnage) that would follow.

I agree, actually. I don't necessarily want Marten and Dora to break up, but I am really looking forward to the next big plot twist that turns everything on it's head. Maybe someone will get shot.

Personally, I'd be satisfied with more Pintsize foolishness.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the plotlines, but I like the jokes more.

Definitely need more Pintsize.
I think if Dora and Marten broke up she'd go back to Goth Dora from the sadness/emtional instability and I really, really hated Goth Dora so there is no way I want them to break up.

It's natural to want a little drama in your life.  That's why soap operas are so popular.  That's why ... well, fill in your own TV shows.

I've been waiting for a front-line breakup, myself: not like Ellen existing only to be the first girl to do the Booty Boogie, but one where both characters keep shivering in place, raising the anxiety levels of at least half the QC cast.  Imagine a break-up in which Faye continues to console (and abuse) both sides, Steve sides with Dora, and Penelope becomes the staunchest supporter of Marten's position.  Not just "it didn't work out", but Dora and Marten had to make an ethical decision, and went in opposite, incompatible directions.

For instance, what if Dora had troubles keeping DoC afloat, and started selling bootleg mix CDs under the counter?  What if she included the first decent song Marten wrote, and he didn't find out until she handed him a check for his cut of the profits, with similar checks for the other band members?  (Okay, so $12.50 isn't much for the first month, but ...).  We can blow up the whole intellectual property rights thing in about ten panels spread over a week or so, and let the world polarize.

In the meantime, Hanners decides she'd better copyright herself before someone starts selling HanneClones; PintSize gets into the argument until he overloads with an identity crisis and starts spouting Sartre and DesCartes; Tai posts a photocopying session (of her salient parts) on YouTube; Raven makes tiny dolls of the CoD staff and sells them -- along with little pins -- to the customers.  The whole thing ends with a fight over her right to make the dolls, lots of apologies ... but the make-up sex doesn't necessarily recapitulate the original romances.

rten to admit to Faye that he really just loves her, but is confused about his feelings for Dora.  I figure that Dora is going to overhear something like that and all sorts of drama can go from there.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.  I do write some, but my drawing skills are somewhat less than the typical fare at xkcd.  If you want to see these ideas in readable form, convince Jeph to use them; I won't get there in this decade.

Doing a regular comic requires a different style of writing: you have to present a situation and put a cadence on it in just a few panels.  It requires strongly-defined characters, pithy dialogue, and enough drawing ability to support the expressions.  I'm working on it, but for now, I'm happy to toss out ideas in case something inspires Jeph.  If you're really interested in my writing, you can see some examples in the brain teasers at Braingle.com

As most writers can tell you, ideas are a dime a dozen, now that the dollar has fallen on international markets.  Treatments are part of the grind-it-out process, and execution is where the talent is.  I'm saving a few things, and working on more, for potential publication (probably self-publication, which bears a similar relationship to other things that begin with "self-"), but the day job and family have to come first.

No, you aren't a bad person.

I've been hoping ever since the "Marten Gets His Hair Cut" drama and the ensuing "Dora Is Incredibly Insecure" manifestation (http://questionablecontent.net./view.php?comic=1097) that Marten and Dora would break up.  Dora insecurities are suffocating their relationship, evidenced in several occasions that I'm too lazy to look up right now.  (The "why don't you go to the movies with your 5 OTHER GIRLFRIENDS" strip comes to mind.)

Dora has some serious insecurities that she needs to work out before she's ready for a relationship.  She makes Marten the object of those insecurities, so when something goes wrong, it's easy to blame him.  I think the reason I feel so strongly about this is because I've known people like Dora in real life, and the ensuing dysfunctional relationships that follow.  They can make it work for a while, but in the end, one party is always feeling smothered, and Marten is just too damn nice for his own good.

Jeph included the "I don't need his APPROVAL to change my HAIR." line to remind us of the OMG DRAMA that came after Marten got his hair cut without Dora's approval.  I think this is leading up to confront some of the bullshit that Dora has been dishing out ever since.

I personally hope that it is Marten, not Faye, who calls Dora on said bullshit.  We've seen Marten grow a spine before, and I would like to see more of it.

I don't know about y'all, but I feel fine waiting for the one strip where Faye tells MArtin that she loves him, that Sven is a buffer fuck, and Dora to walk in just as Martin kisses Faye.

Someone needs to take this out of context.
That is all.

And in my opinion, there are too many unfinished plots hanging about, we should finish up those before starting any new ones.

Part of a strip's continuity is that there are always unfinished plot lines hanging about.  For instance, as far as we know, there's still an android boyfriend in Hannelore's closet (last seen in #1017).  She said she was going to send him back, but ...  :|
Have we seen the last of Genevieve (#677), or will she be the turning point in Faye & Sven's relationship?  Will Special Agent Alan Turin turn out to be Mr. Right for Hannelore?  Will Amanda return to steal Dora from Marten?  Will Marten miss his timing with Faye and wind up in a dead-end relationship with Jenny (one appearance in O'Surleys)?

And ... what about Naomi?  (That's from The Electric Company, not QC -- hardly an indie reference, but ... )

The strip is trying to shadow reality -- some reality, somewhere -- and is doing a decent job.  When was the last time your own life didn't have a lot of unfinished plots?  I might have hit a minimum of loose threads at graduation (high school and college both), but that's about it.  Think about it: the long-lived TV programs are the ones that leave us with plot threads all over, the continuing dramas.  Susan Lucci has been playing the same character on All My Children since ... 1972, maybe?  (I looked it up -- it's 1970.  38 years as Erica Kane, at least 10 marriages.)  In any case, it's that continuing interest that keep the fans coming back.

I don't want them to split up but I want some more hanging-out-with-friends thanks! I used to love Dora and like Faye, recently they both seem bitchier and it's harder to like them. I've never seen Marten as weak but he's just a bit insipid at the moment. There seems to be little socialising any more and Faye barely seems to live with Marten!

I certainly don't have a problem with the comic at the moment, but when I got addicted and read 2000 comics in a row I loved the characters and was really invested in the storyline. With my increasing apathy toward the main female cast, complete disinterest in Hanners (I don't dislike her I just find her boring most of the time) and equal disinterest in Dora and Marten hanging out in domestic bliss I could handle a change.  :-P

If they did break up, Faye would prolly take Dora's side, just so that she can keep herself from taking advantage of the situation. Penelope would have to use threats of violence to keep Raven from going to comfort the poor indie boy. But everyone would forget to tell Hannelore, and after some heavy drinking they'd end up in bed together. She'd wake up next to Marten, thinking the worst, start hyperventilating, and Pintsize will tell her to hold that expression while he activates camera mode.

Wyr, I like those ideas.  I'm not so sure about drink overcoming Hannelore's OCD and Marten's overweening niceness before either of them passes out, but there are a few compatible hints in the previous text.  Also, this could be the painful beginning to a breakthrough in Hannelore's behavior.  Yeah, I like it.

Maybe someone will get shot.

Ugh.  That would suck from my point of view.  Too much like work.

Quote
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the plotlines, but I like the jokes more.

To be honest, I come for the plot, but I look FORWARD to the jokes.

I miss the QC of yore that (and I've mentioned it before in another thread) had some of the most quotable lines I'd ever seen.  It was fresh, it was edgy, and it was biting.

And it was almost all Faye, Marten and Steve delivering the lines.

I don't know exactly what happened.

It can't be easy thinking up new stuff every week to keep a bunch of people entertained who have come to expect a certain level of canon while maintaining fresh ideas.

I mean, seriously, the more you write a story, the more boxed in you become...too many instances of "they wouldn't do that, based upon what they've already done."

No wonder poor Jeph keeps adding characters.  He's created molds for his existing ones that don't fit some of his humor.

And as a fellow writer and an outside observer, I've got absolutely NO IDEA how to help.  No advice.  No clue.

So no, you're not a bad person for wanting the breakup of Marten and Faye...you just would like to see some fresh turmoil that Jeph can put his talent to work making funny.

Quote
Plot lines AND jokes.  that's what makes this comic go around.

*sigh* And you said it before me.  And without all that verbose clutter up there, too.

Quote
I think if Dora and Marten broke up she'd go back to Goth Dora from the sadness/emtional instability and I really, really hated Goth Dora so there is no way I want them to break up.

Ya know, I never thought of it that way...but I think you're right.  Goth Dora wasn't really my favorite person, either.  It was her attraction to Marten that made her A"Dora"ble as a character.

*rimshot*

*wince* Yes, yes.  I'm humor-impaired.  Thank goodness I'm not Jeph or QC would be hosed.

Quote
It's natural to want a little drama in your life.

Keyword: LITTLE.

For those of us with an overabundance of drama in real life, we like a little humor so we can laugh instead of screaming.

I really do find it hard to relate to folks who actively seek out and desire drama.  It is my opinion that they should go to school and work in Emergency Medicine -- they'll get all the drama they can stand.

Damn.  That's actually a pretty decent idea.  Hope Jeph is paying attention.  That arc could be a goldmine...especially if Jeph finds a real indie band he'd like to promote and have a musical tie-in for QC...

Kinda what I was thinking..."behind closed doors" skull sessions between the author and his hand-picked, most-creative readership for story arc ideas.

I don't think Jeph's quite at that stage yet.  Nor may he ever be.

You demonstrate a working knowledge of the process.  Should you choose to self-publish, I have an old friend who runs an online vanity press should you decide to go that route.

I'm too proud to use it;  I'm shopping my 2005 NaNo novel around to see if an agent will pick it up...preferably without rubber gloves.

Marten with a spine?  Well, wonders never cease.

That actually might be interesting.

And has all kinds of potential for funny as he tries out his newly grown spine in all kinds of hilariously inappropriate ways.

Along with all the other obvious "What have you done with Marten?" gags.

Quote

See, that's where I'd like to have Marten grow a spine and NOT kiss Faye, while making a comment about "sloppy Sven Seconds" while actively pushing her away and THEN Dora walks in.

That could have lots of hilarious possibilities.

Wow.  I just laughed out loud at that.

The trouble is the permanence of that story line pretty much destroys the cohesive nature of the cast.  There'd be so MUCH drama fallout from it, I think it would screw things up to the point where there really wouldn't be much of a QC anymore.

But damn...Marten and Hanners doing the nasty...and her waking up next to Marten...naked...all covered in man-scent...

That would drive the poor girl into fits that most of the readership, I am certain, would find hilarious.

And poor Marten...how do you apologize to someone for sleeping with them?  Especially since (and we can only assume Jeph will be tasteful about it) it was a good time had by all?

"I'm so sorry we made passionate drunken love and ended up staining your sheets like that."

"I really didn't mean to get you all messy, Hanners..it just...happened?"

"Hanners, I don't want to know what you're doing in there but I am concerned about the bottle brush you took in with you."

"If I told you it was all a bad dream, would you believe me?"

"I wouldn't believe me if I told ME it was all a bad dream...because bad dreams don't usually make me feel this good."

Or some such.

Wow.

Quote
I don't think I'd want to see Dora and Marten break up, even considering the entertainment value.
Suppose it's just I've never really liked Faye.

I feel exactly the same way.

However, the whole Marten/Hanners thing just absolutely screams "QC Hilarity"

If only it wouldn't destroy the fabric of the QC universe, I would SO go for it.

Maybe a dream/nightmare sequence?  Kinda like the kind Jeph did earlier last year?

Agreed.  Especially the pintsize part.

Thanks for all the neat feedback, not to mention the emotional support and the self-pub link.  I'll keep it in mind.  However, my current desk job pays the bills quite nicely, and most of my creative time goes into writing.  Maybe I need to grab a couple of books on plot timing for comic format.  One of my biggest problems as a writer is that I move to the resolution far too quickly, so using the comic format would be a step in the opposite direction -- and might be a good idea.

Pintsize is implicated in a counterfeit mexican anthropomorphic computer smuggling operation. Hilarity ensues when the Federales show up and he is extradited to Mexico. He then makes his way to Tijuana where classic Pintsize debauchery takes place! All the mean while, he's emailing pictures to Hanalore  :)

I personally hope that it is Marten, not Faye, who calls Dora on said bullshit.  We've seen Marten grow a spine before, and I would like to see more of it.

Marten with a spine?  Well, wonders never cease.

That actually might be interesting.

And has all kinds of potential for funny as he tries out his newly grown spine in all kinds of hilariously inappropriate ways.

Along with all the other obvious "What have you done with Marten?" gags.

Actually Marten growing a spine of the "telling off/ beating up Sven, for treating Faye that way and doing so in a manner that causes problems between Marten and Dora" variety might be even more interesting...
