Your top lot?
« on: 30 Dec 2008, 18:31 »

I wanted to open myself up to music other people like, so I made this.

I just want people to post bands they like, doesn't matter which.  Then I will search them out and listen to them.  A way to expand my library, and hopefully get others to do the same.

Here is the list of the bands I consider the top of the lot I listen to.

Radiohead
Gardenstate
65daysofstatic
CKY
Bob Marley and the Wailers

All pretty well known, which may help to show my current problems :P.

CKY

Not even to be a jerk but, why? Why in the world? Your taste in music based on the remaining four bands seems entirely unfit for the shitfest that is CKY.

I like allot of types of music.

CKY included, I have listened to that band for a land time.
I also listen to DIsturbed, Drowning Pool, and Metalica quite often.
Don't forget about the other classics such as ACDC.

My "top" bands:

Radiohead
Muse
Dream Theater
Modest Mouse
Explosions in the Sky
Mogwai
Sigur Ros
Jonathan Coulton

Nothing obscure. Though I guess quite a few people wouldn't know Jonathan Coulton.

These are the most amazing bands in the world:
(in no particular order)

Iron Maiden
Blind Guardian
Persuader
Death
Decapitated
Dark Angel
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Strapping Young Lad
(earlyish) Slayer
(earlyish) Megadeth
Galneryus
Dream Theater
Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath is pretty amazing, people like to credit Led Zeppelin for redefining rock, but Sabbath did just as much of that as they did. Same goes for Deep Purple, really.

Had less of the usual rot a metal band like that has.  Though the lyrics still made no sense.

Hmm, you didn't immediately turn it off.

In that case, if you're looking for straight heavy metal you should check out the previously mentioned Black Sabbath, as well as Candlemass.

I also heartily endorse the mention of Death and would like to add Cynic and Atheist to that list.

Well these are the people he's asking for advice, so they're not really obscure to the people that, at the time, matter.

Of course he might have been talking about popular "in general" in which case it is rather strange.

related to CKY: check out Deron Miller's metal as fcuk side project, World Under Blood, featuring Tim "I Have a Million Hands and Feet" Yeung, and Luke "I'm the Douchebag from Sleep Terror" Jaeger. James Murphy I believe is/has been producing their album that's supposed to come out eventually. Listen if you like super catchy technical guitars with absolutely ridiculous drumming and super awesome James Murphy guest solos.

Umz, I'm still pretty new at exploring music, and I frequently get sidetracked from trying new stuff by all my old favorites. I guess what I'm saying is I don't like having to slog through filler tracks, since my favorite songs are hardly ever a band's top track.
Anyways, here's some of what I like. I list a couple [a bunch] that are obvious.
White stripes
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Spoon
My Dad (seriously, he made us this album for Christmas. Talk about obscure indie*)
Weird Al
Daft Punk
Enya
Gorillaz
Queen ain't so bad (actually, that whole thing would be a good band name)

Not that I care, but which of these are considered bizarre as far as preferences go?
(Actually "My Dad" would be a good band name too.)

*He took requests and everything. It was awesome.

Nick Cave and Ryan Adams fight it out for which one is my favourite.  Pink Floyd and Wilco battle it out for third and fourth. Most things Daryl Palumbo does make it into my top, Glassjaw and United Nations particularly.

I also love Radiohead, Primal Scream, BRMC, Beastie Boys, Mansun, Faith No More and Eminem.

The Beatles and Bob Dylan are both among my favourites but I don't really count them becuase as much as I am fascinated by and love their music, as much as I like to study it and such, they're not really FAVOURITE artists. I plan on owning all the Beatles records and I have about 18 Dylan CDs (I'll always buy a new album...) but I'm not passionate about them and don't identify with them in the same way as The Floyd, even.

Sound like fun.  Away we go...(amended for descriptions and reasons why i like them)

Skinny Puppy and all related off shoots - They remain my stand by and continue to challenge and influence, even after 25 years.  From industrial to idm to strange pop, they've done it all and done it well.
Pneumatic Detach - noise from the bowels of hell.  Play it loud or not at all.  Rhythmic noise.
Bugs Crawling Out of People - Spoken word rants set against crazed out beats and schizoid sounds
Placebo - so goddamn catchy.
Tom Waits - If I need to explain this....actually, it's all in the lyrics here.
Clint Mansell - there's something heartbreaking about his instrumental work that I just adore.
The Smears - punk girls from Canada.  Sassy, ballsy and fun.
Combichrist - lewd, trashy and dancy.  Imagine KMFDM on phenobarbitol.
Unter Null - Terror EBM at it's best.  A one women powerhouse of hard beats, harder lyrics and catchy synth lines.
Haujobb - just plain stunning blend of industrial, idm, cold electonics and technolgic paranoia
Autoclav 1.1 - downtempo beauty.
Iszoloscope - Walls of static, percussion and industrial terror that still manage to sound strangely fragile and organic.
Scrap.edx - Pure power driven beats, scatter-shot rhythms and inventive time-shifting.
Individual Totem - an unbelieveably dense and complex mixture of sounds, melodies and rhythms hidden behind some of the catchiest industrial you'll find.
Neon Cage Experiment - French industrial mastery.  Pure old school EBM, done right and done well.
....etc.

Let's see here....

Iron Maiden: I got into them in the 6th or 7th grade because of my guitar teacher and... really, do I need to say more?
Menomena: I love quirky music ideas that gel together to build songs from the bottom up and Menomena are full of such ideas. Not to mention they have a pretty kick ass drummer.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Powerful Powerful music. I can listen to their work and instantly be transported into another mindset, one where I can only focus on their notes as they take their sweet sweet time to develop each piece with expertly placed dialog tracks that can at once send chills down your spine, sadden the depths of your soul and uplift you to amazing heights (all without the use of drugs)
A Silver Mt. Zion: Sort of like Godspeed's pissed off bastard child. Great stuff, but doesn't quite reach (or really try to) the same heights as Godspeed.
The Dodos: Clever lyrics intricate guitar and, tight and loud but never over powering drumming swirl together to form a jaunty sundae that slowly melts over the course of frenzied jam sessions.
The Roots: Deep lyrics on their later records, real music backing their every move and a sense of "us against the world" in every cut? What's not to like.
The Mars Volta: Crazy whacked out EVERYTHING and yet somehow makes sense. It's finely crafted and always gets me dancing while discovering something new in the music.
Iron & Wine: Deceptively somber music that comes from quite possibly the most awesome man alive (listen to the crowd banter on any of Sam Beam's live bootlegs and you'll know what I mean)
Jeff Beck: A master guitarist... nothing else to say really.

And last, but certainly not least:
King's X: Totally underrated and have been my favorite band since my guitar teacher introduced me to them. If you haven't heard of them you're missing out on some great heavy rock. (imagine if the Beatles mated with BlackSabbath)

Guys you are making this even more list thread-y than it should be.

The idea was to pick your top 5, not to write down every band you love.

Also, make with some fucking discussion.

Edit because I am dense: lot came to mean 5 in the context of this thread because the OP defined it as such. Regardless, it's not particularly interesting to read a long list of a stranger's favorite bands so I was trying to promote something other than list thread-y goodness in here.

I'm just a generic dude with generic top 5 favorites:

Neutral Milk Hotel
- Generic indie top favorite

Olivia Tremor Control
- On the best days, I feel that they are the best of the E6 collective, a collective that I spent all summer just worshiping

Menomena - They make everything good again!

Los Campesinos! / Broken Social Scene
- I wish that one day these bands would have an epic battle with each other that way I could pick out a clear victor

Boredoms - However, me liking this band will not help me score with the hot japanese girls at school :(

These are the most amazing bands in the world:
Needs more sabbath.

For me, it goes something like this:

Agalloch (OP likely wouldn't like this)
Clutch (OP might like this)
Down (OP should like this)
Sculptured (I would be very surprised if the OP likes them)
Overkill (OP should like this, early is better musically)

If we're pushing for a top 5, I'm going to cheat:

Ryan Adams w/ and w/o the Cardinals or Whiskeytown
Nick Cave (w/ Bad Seeds or Grinderman)
Jeff Tweedy (w/ Wilco or Uncle Tupelo)
Pink Floyd (and all solo careers)
Weezer (plus Rivers' demo compilations)

If you don't like me cheating, then Ryan Adams by himself, Nick Cave w/ the Bad Seeds, Jeff Tweedy w/ Wilco, Pink Floyd w/o solo careers and Weezer w/o the demo compilations. Mmmmm'kay?

You know, for a long time it was very hard for me to pin down a handful of unimpeachable favorites, but I think at this point the three musical entities I will never get over and will always to listen to again are Joy Division, Tom Waits and Boris. Oh, and David Bowie. But I need to cut myself off there or I am liable to babble. For some reason or another I connect with music made by these people in a unique emotion and visceral level that is not as consistent or nonexistent with other artists.  And whenever I really listen to them, as music is in some cases meant to be listened, without distractions and utterly focused on the content and sound, the result is always mind-altering.  And for me that is what it means for them to be my "top lot."

For a while, I thought I was over Björk. I listened to Vespertine again, recently, and remembered that it is still the best album ever.

Joanna Newsom follows in a close second with The Milk-Eyed Mender.

Going to school in Michigan, I heard of a local folk group called Breathe Owl Breathe. They are now my third favorite band.
