Huge Steam sale
« on: 26 Dec 2008, 21:11 »

Steam is having a huge sale on a lot of stuff apparently almost all the titles they sell, with 10-75% discounts.  I'm downloading Bioshock right now for $4.99, down from $19.99.  All 3 Civ 4 games for 25$, the iD super pack is 35$.  Portal is 5$, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky is 17.49$, Ultimate DOOM is a buck.  All the Unreals except 2k3 for 20 bucks.  Valve's entire collection for 75$.  Basically there is a lot of stuff that's pretty cheap.  I'm probably getting a few more things.  You have to be quick, though, it ends January 2.

I signed up for Steam just for this! I bought L4D and the Orange Box!

I was going to buy the full Valve collection but then I decided I would not play most of the stuff in there so I did not bother (I am not much of a gamer really).

I'm getting Audiosurf ($5), Bioshock ($5), and Counter-Strike Source ($10). Maybe TrackMania United Forever. Any other recommendations? (I already have The Orange Box and Garry's Mod.)

If you don't want to use your credit card on Steam, go to a Simon-owned mall and get one of their gift cards. They're basically Visa debit cards. As long as you register your mailing address to the card on their website, they'll work online. (Steam included.)

Don't be that guy, Troll. I'm fairly certain VAC2 has done some IP bans in the past.

I'm leaning more towards "don't be a twat because you can" than "there will be repercussions". At least it'll be the first time a company has earned money from hackers.

I know there's a big difference between hacking and griefing, but even silly little hacks that don't disrupt gameplay are still liable to make people angry.

Aimbots and the like are pretty pointless, but the most fun I've had in a quite some time was when a hacker made everybody fly in America's Army, and gave them all unlimited ammo RPGs.

DOOM seemed longer when I was 8.
(Psychonauts FUCK YES)

I have never hacked on any game ever and I don't intend to, I have been curious about them but never enough to use one, I have specc'ed hackers and it seems like no fun, I think a mac ban would be pretty neat for hackers, then they would need to buy a new nic/mobo/router before trying that shit again.

You can spoof MACs pretty easily. A hardware ban is where it hurts.

Re: Huge Steam sale

The way VAC works now, anything beyond locking an account is redundant. At most, I've seen a hacker spend two days before being slapped silly by Steam, and even if he does go out and buy a brand new copy of the game on a brand new account, it'll only buy him another two days. At that rate, I'd happily take the money off the hands of some poor griefing tweens.

The problem with most hackers is that they don't target such well-protected games, where the only bans they'll get are on a per-server basis. There are no admin sites big enough or dedicated enough to make even the smallest percentage of hackers unable to play the game, and that's why hacking can be a major issue.

5 bucks for Bioshock is a friggin steal.  It almost makes  me consider using Steam.  Fortunately, I already have the game so I don't have to go there.

That was basically the reason I started this thread.  Bioshock for five bucks.  That's less than the original Fallouts right now at GOG.

Woops strike that.  But still.  For the cost of a carton of cigarettes (approximately, I'm just guessing), you can get Bioshock.

Left 4 Dead comes highly recommended.  I remember seeing an advertisement for EA titles, but didn't check to see which ones.  If they're available, Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield 2 are excellent, despite a number of (relatively minor) bugs and oversights.

I gotta remember to pick up Bioshock.  I already have it, but I've got a friend who doesn't and would probably be too lazy to grab Steam without someone essentially forcing her to do so :P

Evernew, it is only free for a limited time.

Personally, I think I would like Psychonauts better on a console. I played it on PC, it felt like a pretty awkward port. Haven't played it on PS2 yet.

I bought Clear Sky, and have spent way too much time on it already. A lot harder than the first one. Everything is so expensive, and I can't find any decent armor. Maybe I should rez the clersky thread.

I have the following in my cart as of now:

But I think I went overboard.
Which would you kick out?

My most likely candidates are

Civ 4 (because I have never played a Civ game and can't really tell what they are like)
The Longest Journey (I know I was going to *cough* acquire it some time ago but it didn't work and when I tried remembering why I wanted it I couldn't)

Audiosurf, The Orange Box, Commandos 2 and Bioshock are pretty much a must for me. The rest I just threw in for good measure / out of curiosity / because what the hell, it's 5 €.

So the question really boils down to - is it worth paying 5 € for Peggle, 8 € for Company of Heroes, 5 € for Sacred and 15 € for Civ 4?

Anything you think I've missed?
World of Goo sounds interesting.
My machine probably can't play Left 4 Dead. I'm willing to find out for 5 € whether it can manage Bioshock.

If your pc can run team fortress 2, it can probably manage l4d. valve has done a good job on performance, even with ten bajillion zombies running at you.

oh, uh, first post i guess. i know some people on this forum and they said there were good people, so, er, hi.

I was never a fan of Commandos, personally.  The Longest Journey has probably one of the best stories of any adventure game ever, and Civ 4 is just a lot of fun.  I dunno, man.

I have so far only played Audiosurf. It's fun but not a game you can play for too long.

And I've been thinking about getting Civ4 for my brother as a late christmas present. Just because he is in the army and plays a lot of shooters at home. I don't want him to just blow up stuff on a small scale. I want him to think big.
