Strange lag issues in TF2
« on: 03 Feb 2009, 20:16 »

Haven't heard of anything like this, maybe you have.

some times, I get these weird spots of lag where 1. my ping and combat stays normal and 2. my FPS stays normal, but a few things lag out:

- changing class lags sometimes up to 3-5 minutes
- "say"ing anything lags up to 3-5 minutes
- voice commands lag usually between 1 - 3 minutes
- switching weapons (between primary, secondary and melee) will sometimes bungee back and forth. Like I'll try to pull out my shotgun, and the animation starts, but then quickly reverts back to rocket launcher.
- switching weapon loadout takes as long as changing class.

anyone seen anything remotely like this? lag where neither your ping nor FPS goes outside of the optimal range. (I'm talking 50 ping and 130 fps here)

edit: 0 loss and choke as well. rate is set to 30,000 cl_updaterate 66, cl_cmdrate 66.

I had some similar weird issues with Left 4 Dead that turned out to be resulting from the program using my dual core processor. Setting an affinity for a single processor (by ctrl+alt+deleting and right clicking on the game process) fixed the problems.

But I've never heard of that being a problem for TF2.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is a dual core problem. The source engine is not well optimized for dual core, and may experience problems - and if L4D has them, they are probably in TF2 as well.

Yes it is.

Also, what you're experiencing sounds like a network timeout issue. Have you noticed a faulty connection to the server before experiencing these problems? Usually it's a result of regaining your connection literally in the middle of being disconnected by the host, which boots most of your important packets to the back-burner while it deals with other players.

If it's a problem with multiple cores it's not the fault of the Source engine, which has been multi-thread optimized since 2007. Make sure you're running a fully patched version of Windows and that all your drivers are up-to-date (including the AMD multi-core optimizer, if you need it).
