The fixation of turning QC into a slashfest scares me, more than just a little bit.

Turning anything into a slash fest is rather horrifying.  Leave it on LJ, under a lock, where it belongs.

I thought that this encounter might be leading up to another "Dora is insecure and takes it out on Marten" fight.  I'm pretty sure that's where we're going.  I am hoping that Faye tells Marten to grow a pair and tell Dora to stop bitching him out about every time he talks to another girl.

Life would be boring without the occasional odd person.

But even their behavior can be rather repetitive. ;>

Everyone's expecting this storyline to go *splat* like the last "Dora's insecurites" storyline, but I want big drama :( I shall make a prophecy! Here goes:

Marten finally gets fed up of Dora getting moody when stuff like this happens and calls her on it, they have a tiff but unlike last time when they stayed up and talked it out they both get huffy and storm off. Marten's back at the library and sees RandomCollegeGirl again, and Friday's strip has him asking her out for a drink or something - Drama and sordid affairs ensue!

I'm putting good odds on that never happening, but I'd love it to, it would be some good drama.

Whereas I think Dora will tell Marten she's just kidding, but she would rather he tell her about being hit on, which I understand. By which I mean she's a bit serious and a bit worried, but not quite as much as some seem to think.

Also, every time I see "grow a pair" in these forums, I wonder how well these folks do in relationships. Marten has shown he can get angry when he thinks the situation warrants. And as I recall, he didn't go crawling back to Dora—he went back to someone he loved who was hurting from having some old, deep wounds pulled open again. I also note that they both apologized, not just Marten. And a last note, to the Clan of Testicular Growth—the 'winner' of a couple's argument is nearly always really the loser.

Speaking as a member of the "grow a pair" faction, I've been doing well in relationships.  More to the point, I was like Marten very early on in life - THAT was when my relationships were bad.  While mutual compromise and communication make for a good relationship, one-sided caving is going to a)make the caving person progressively more resentful, and b)get the caving person dumped the moment the other person finds someone with more balls or more money.  Why would someone have fear of abusing his/her partner if the partner never reacts with meaningful consequences?

Growing a pair?  GOOD IDEA.

Bad, because I've always been in Marten's position where the girl uses me as a scratching post because she's a bit sad that day, or she's got some bullshit excuse, or the Sun rose that morning.

Do you really think that Dora is abusing Marten?

Yes.

Would she really want him to tell her, though? Someone already said it earlier, but that would seem a little like he was trying to be a manipulative twat rather than keeping open those lines of communication: "Hey, someone asked me out. Yeah, that's right. You just remember that I can leave any time I want, kid." I doubt Marten would even be able borrow a set big enough to play off something like that.

Dora as abuser.  Wow.  I would have picked Faye as the one who really played headgames with Marten.  I'll need to go back through the strips to find the ones where Dora calls Marten names, undermines his self confidence, threatens to leave him or to hurt him,  or does more than have a 10 minute insecurity episode.

Can anyone help me find all the Dora the Abuser strips?  No, seriously, maybe she really is and the evidence is in the strip.

HOW DARE YOU NOT BUY INTO MY IRRATIONAL CONSPIRACY THEORY (then Marten got told off for not immediately rolling over for her, then Dora gave a heartwarming explanation that totally did not affect her future behavior at all)

I think it's both. :p

I think Dora's going a little overboard, but at least she's not raging like last time. As far as Marty's testicular fortitude, I agree with Roullefere. He's just non confrontational. He can get angry, even with Dora, if his buttons are pushed just right. But he normally likes to handle it calmly or with humor. He may be a bit too unwilling to make himself firm though.
... also agree with absofflab, completely.

I didn't go back to the very beginning because, well, it's a long list -- all strips showing Dora and Martin's relationship.  Martin has been, in at least one case, insecure about his relationship with Dora enough do be dumb, and at least one time visibly jealous.

The current strip is getting what might be terms an over reaction from the fan base, perhaps, as so far we've seen -- what, 30 seconds worth of irrationality?
Of course, it's pretty average for people with serious baggage or even not so serious baggage to project their own experiences onto unrelated situations.

Time for more Nyquil.

Marten's examples are totally benign as far as I can see.

And a lot of those "Dora's abuse" examples are just Dora screwing around or being brutally honest.
(brutal honesty happens to be a quality I'm attracted to...)

Exactly!

I don't really think Dora is abusive.  Sharp, and sometimes a little more honest than tactful, and plenty insecure, but no relationship is 100% delight all the time, and Marten has had a fair bit of delight, shall we say, in his relationship with Dora.  It's hard to read a timeline in the strip since it's pretty time flexible -- I'd guess it's at least 6 months, maybe a year -- and ONE bad fight with a big make up afterwards?  Award winning!

The one difference I noticed was one several others pointed out -- this is the first time anything -- ANYTHING -- possibly threatening to Dora/The relationship happened to Marten that he DIDN'T immediately tell Dora.  He told her about Tai's piercing immediately, about Hanners immediately, about Faye right off -- but not this, and it is about as minor as Hanners.  And, again, it's not a full out argument yet -- it's a 30 second maybe irrational reaction.

Hell, we are all spending much more time on it than I suspect Jeph or any of the characters will.  Of course, in my case, I've got nothing else to do except cough and feel dizzy, so I'm good with it.

I will admit that there are times when one needs to assert oneself in a relationship—and Marten did that, very well, in fact, at the end of The Talk. Scanning over that reminds me that Faye could be considered abusive, and not just on the physical end of things, if she'd let things go on much further. Whenever I think i detest Faye, I have to remember that she did do the right thing then, and will, sooner or later, probably do it again.

I see Dora as a person who's worked pretty hard to get over a fairly serious childhood hang-up (I'll remind you that we don't know how the Bianchi parents reacted to Sven poaching Dora's friends: for several reasons they should have told him they were off-limits) and yet, sometimes, lets it get the better of her. Like it or not, try as she will, strong as she has become, that insecurity, that tiny fear that she comes second in everything is going to be with Dora for a long time , and every now and then, or more frequently, it will come out. But she has behaved better—hasn't she more or less accepted the Faye-Sven whateverthehellitis? (Or at least tries to act as though she does, which also deserves credit).

Marten, on the other hand, seems to have always been supported at home, however weird it might have been, He's an only child, too, which can make a difference so long as the parents aren't too self-absorbed. Furthermore, he's used to strong women (I don't think any woman can make it in the porn business as well as V Vance has without being fairly strong. Her friendly relationship with her husband confirms this), which is, I suspect, what attracts him to Dora in the first place. Faye, too, for that matter. (more on that in another post).

As I look over this, I can't help thinking that Jeph is looking at all of these posts and laughing his ass off (which is healthier than getting angry). I don't mind, though. The over-analysis, the mincing and dicing of the plot-lines, the citing of old strips, the attempts to piece a consistent narrative together and discover the inner workings of nonexistent people—god, I love it so!

oh that's just because Dora's in a relationship and Faye's (technically) single. Boys make girls crazy imo.

People make people crazy -- I won't even say it's gender specific :)

Hm, it just occurred to me...QC has one lesbian character and at least one bi woman, but guys are all pretty much straight through and through.  Now, it's not surprising -- authors tend to write about what they like, and Jeph may just like bi-girls and lesbians (oh horrors, the boys like the girl on girl action.  I am *shocked*.  SHOCKED, I say...*yawn*) but aside from one mention by Marten about fearing he'd be overcome with the desire to high five another guy in the midst of things, and the brief but scary flirtation with Marten/Sven slash *shudder* I wonder why it's been skipped over?

The last comic, (Where Dora pulls out the sword, and praticularly the look in her eyes as she says, "Carnally, on a regular basis" is the funniest morbid thing that I have seen Dora do for a long time. Part of me was wishing that Dora would chase the woman out of the store with it for a few more panels, but my imagination was able to come up with a funny conclusion to that.

Faye's quote at the end of this and the next comic is very Apathetic, and also good.

this has probably been pointed out but, I get the Comic Via the RSS everyday and at the end of this comic was
Quote from:  Jeff
"OMG DORA IS SUCH A BITCH"
"NO WAY MARTEN IS THE JERK IN THIS SITUATION"
[jeph fires a nuclear missile at the QC discussion board]
and it sent a fit of Giggles through me coming and seeing the board still going strong, just as he predicted, haha
