Cross my words
« on: 20 Jan 2009, 12:13 »

In a mad moment of rashness I found myself agreeing to create a crossword for my student newspaper, which is taking its first baby steps into the big wide world, and it's just hit me that there is no way I can come up with any decent clues or even a word list that will interest the people at my college.

I'd love it if anyone could point me in the right direction on this, or come up with some clues and words themselves. I'll also be turning to the other staff on the paper but I figured that there are plenty of creative people here who might find it fun to do.

If on the other hand you think this is a stupid idea, at least tell it to me in a cryptic clue.

Word: vagina

I think I see a trend developing.

Wouldn't this make more sense as "tight"? I, for one, have never heard anyone say about a woman "yeah man, her vagina was so small".

Yeah, a small vagina is definitely not a bonus.

It was preceded by 'big' okay, sue me for wanting to use an exact antonym.

Now for some serious ones.

Clue: Needs a lot of sulfur to grow.

Word: Watermelon.

Clue: Bill Clinton in 1998.

Word: Impeached.

I am proud of the second one, for it has the same number of letters as "President".

They're mostly non-cryptic really, because I have no hope of coming up with enough cryptic clues each month.

I've got the following so far, the worst will be ditched if I can get better replacements:

barrier / Impedes progress.
cheek / Insolence.
traffic / Heavy in a rush.
demotion / A downward shunt.
spatula / Flattened kitchen utensil.
protect / Keep safe.
expedition / Well-planned adventure.
doubt / Uncertainty.
banana / Yellow snack for primate.
conundrum / Percussive problem.
moment / A brief period in time.

Edit to add: thanks for the serious ones, I don't think the Clinton one would work though because we're a UK college and honestly no one knows much about anything.

Clue: something I'd love to stick in Jon's ass
Answer: foot

Bonus since Jon, being none the wiser, would probably think 'dick' since they've got the same number of letters.

Cryptic one: the fatted gooses last reward
Answer: froise grois

I hate to be a picky little picker of things, but I think it is 'foie gras' and also that in cryptic clues you generally have to be using all of the words (except the part that is the meaning) in the building of the rest of the clue.

Say for example: "A painted line for muddled priest."
Answer: "Stripe"

I only say on account of I have something of a cryptic crossword addiction. Like... I cannot get through a shift at work without a copy of the Times cryptic. I just can't.

Wow, that's a cryptic clue? I always thought they were much much harder. I remember being delighted when I got three of the clues in the Irish Times cryptic crossword once, because I've never gotten into the right mindset.

No, you're right, usually they are a bucketload harder. I made that one up myself, so it is not of the quality found in the Times or the Independent, say.
The Times especially is renowned for its triple, quadruple and even quintuple-layered clues.
