Eastern Guitar?
« on: 23 Jan 2009, 23:05 »

I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations for guitar players that have a more Eastern flair. Thinking more Middle East and India than Chinese.

Although he plays mostly slide blues, Derek Trucks does have a song or five that is/are heavily influenced by Indian music.

John McLaughlin is the main man that comes to mind, especially his Shakti period.

Other than that, you can always try Robbie Basho...I'm sure there are others, but it's late and that's all that comes immediately to mind.

Thank you, all of you. I've written them down, with intent to look them up when I'm not on the single worst connection I've ever been on.

Marty Friedman

Essentially this guy.

Also happens to be my favourite lead guitar player.

Does the band Grails count? They use a 12-string to very middle-eastern-y effect.

Check out Jon Madof, from NYC's Rashanim.

Also, definitely John Mclaughlin as has been said. The self-titled Shakti record is a good place to start.

Speaking of, you mustmustmust check out the lead guitarist/frontman Karl Sanders' solo album Saurian Meditation. It's probably exactly what you're looking for.
