As ever with new(ish) people, part of the problem here is that we don't know you well enough yet to be able to tell when you're joking and when you're not.

Dear Blog Thread,

Is it so hard for people to take a joke over the internet?  I know it all serious and everything, but can't there be some exception to this?

Actually, yes. It is. There is no tone of voice, there is no facial expressions, all we can go in is previous statements and what you write. All of the subtle nuances of human speech is lost when you put it into text. Books generally let the reader know how something is being said, but when it is just text, unless it is ridiculously outrageous, it is generally taken in a neutral tone. Italics, bold and underline help to change the tone as you read it, and convey that there is emphasis, or maybe a second meaning to a word.

For example.
I hit my girlfriend last night.
or
I hit my girlfriend last night.

In the first example, I may actually be domestically abusing my girlfriend. But in the second example, I am using italics to convey that I did not actually hit her, but rather, I did something else, something that may be considered hitting to a child who is too young to understand.
Keep in mind also what Inlander said, we do not really know who you are, so we are unsure how you really act. There are people in the world who think it is okay to lie and neglect their significant others because they are too busy getting drunk. We call them bad people.

Jesus guys I could tell that was a joke straight away. Lighten the fuck up and maybe give folks the benefit of the doubt once in a while? Or at least try to be a bit more diplomatic than "you are an absolute fucking asshole" or "you are the type of person I hate." Jeeeez, maybe Patrick was right.

I just tried to show my friends the photos of the Chicago apartment and I couldn't open the Chicagocon thread.

Then I tried to check the exact wording of the Exterminator sign and I couldn't open the scavenger hunt thread.

Dear blog,

I'm not a fan of Valentine Day, and neither is my girlfriend. Which is lucky, as it means there is no pressure on me to do anything. However I will probably do something small anyway just because I love her.

And to rewind a little, there is nothing wrong with slapping your girlfriend around a little. Sometimes it's exactly what is needed.

Sorry, sometimes it's exact;y what is needed.

In other news I'm life modelling tonight, and I also have a job interview at a new bar in Hove. Unfortunately in the phone interview the lady used the word 'funky' to describe the place. This is bad. but I am broke, and need a job.

Dear Blog thread.

I am probably going out on Valentines day to a "traffic light" party, one that consists of wearing Green if your single, yellow if in a "sort of" relationship and red if out of bounds. I have to go to keep my friends happy, they are worried about me being indoors too much.

I am very tempted to dress soley in black and see what happens, is this 1. Humourous or 2. Deeply irritating.

Also, I am having a friend visit me soon from Newcastle, and I have to give a presentation on the crusader attacks on Constantinople. Wish me Luck!

That would be brilliant, how better to confuse people, hells maybe I should go dressed as a traffic light and act with honest confusion when I am not allowed in.

I would do that if I did not have love birds in my house who insist on going out and being nice. I know they are trying to help but good grief it gets irritating when you literally can't talk to someone because there opposite number is so intent on devouring their tonsils.

I'm going to an anti-Valentine's day party at my friend's place in Canton.  This means he is cooking (he's a cook at the Tremont, I don't know how good that place is but it's enough for him to afford a house in Canton), and there will be drunken makeouts on top of his house overlooking much of Baltimore.

Re: the day of Eros: I'd like to do something sweet and romantic for Alyssa, even if it's just taking her out to a nice dinner, but I have only 101 dollars in my savings account, and if I go under 100, they close the account (because that makes sense), and I have literally $0.27 in my checking. If the day comes around and I haven't figured something out, I'm going to feel like such a shmuck.  :-(

I apologize in advance if this isn't cool... I've been asked by a few of my friends to post links to their blog. *sigh* They're female, I'm not... I couldn't really say 'no'. I'm sure you understand.

Anyway, it's a blog where three truly geeky girls are basically just writing about whatever awesome and really nerdy thing strikes them at the moment. from Frank Miller to Macross Plus, Green Lantern to Ghostbusters... it's a new blog, but it's shaping up pretty well.

Anyway, here's the link, and thanks for not executing me for this. :-p

i get to do it for easter every year too because greek orthodox easter always comes after regular christian easter! but we also get a bonus massive lamb carcass roasted in front of the house on a spit in addition to twice the candy. easter is a-okay.

Hi Qwoozles,

after annoying the Meebles with my moving-into-a-new-place-and-figuring-out-where-to-put-what yammering, I'm opening the floor to general discussion.
Well, if you have anything to add to it. If not, maybe you just want to take a look.

So this is it: My new room.

Also, last weekend I did [unspecified controlled substance] for the first time and, another first, I walked over to a girl in a club, struck up a conversation and without having to do anything else she gave me her number on a little piece of paper, preceded by the biggest cheeky double-entendre I could have asked for.
That was nice.

Jonas, did you get the pictures I emailed you? Just let me know, and I can cross it of my mental to-do-list.

Today, I had my English class. I was supposed to read The Picture of Dorian Gray for it, but I lost the book and although I looked for it for half an hour in my tiny room, I couldn't find it again for the life of me. So I went to the lecturer before class and explained the situation to him, and he looked me up and down and said, "yeah, your book is actually in your pants." And there it was, sticking out of my pants. I don't normally store my books in my pants, but I brought it to the kitchen with me to read while eating, and then I wanted to put it down at some point but couldn't because all surfaces were sticky and wet so I just stuck it in my pants instead. And I forgot about it and just walked about with a book sticking out of my pants. That sort of explains the looks I got today. I don't know whether my professor now thinks I was being cheeky or if he thinks I'm a huge idiot and I'm not sure which would be preferable.

This kind of stuff happens to me like all the time. I was voted "crazy professor" in high school. I decided to laugh about it though and not put my head through a wall.

So this Burning Man camp from Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Experiment, is throwing a party on Saturday night SOMEWHERE in the city.  The location won't even be revealed until the day it happens.  It will start at 11ish and go on until breakfast time.  It costs less if you go in costume.  In other words it looks like it will live up to PEX's reputation in that it will be the best party in the city (because they throw the best parties in this city).

I have tickets.

Now I just need LSD.

Dear blog thread,

Today, i woke up for my second day back in lectures thinking that after 4 days of sunshine all of the snow which fell over a week ago would be gone. As it turns out, none of it was, wtf snow? So i had to descend the steepest hill i have ever walked on while trying to stay standing and not sliding into the middle of the busy crossroads at the bottom. Managing this the paved area in front of our student's union had basically turned into an ice rink so 10,000 students were trying to negotiate the ice and trying not to check each other as if it was a game of hockey (this actually happened twice, i think by accident). I hope it goes away soon.

To evernew, is the shelf above your head when you sit in the 1-seater? I could never do that, i have this weird fear of shelves collapsing on me.

That picture is frightening.

Well, my roommate and I got our first gas bill for our apartment and it was $250! This isn't even including electricity! We're pretty sure that either our landlord put the bill for the entire time that the apartment was vacant on our account, or we're being charged for multiple apartments. Either way, bitches gonna pay. Our apartment stays freezing all the god damn time! The only thing that we do that takes a lot of gas is use the dryer. On top of this our post-doc is out this week, so I get to be in charge of the undergrads. One of them is actually fairly competent and can largely on his own. The other one needs constant supervision, is always asking questions that you've answered repeatedly, screws up a lot, and has this weird thing where he is always rocking left and right, which bugs the hell out of me. But he's gone for the day, so maybe I will actually be able to get some work done.

I once tried to argue religion with two mormon women who came to my door once. It wasn't a pleasant experience, and at one point I got so fed up with their unabashed ignorance that I said a few things that they didn't appreciate, and nobody bothered me at that address again.

If it's a "mission" then yes, only the men are good enough to do that. I think these two women just decided that the town was too full of sinners and were doing some extracurricular Word of Lord Spreading (they also weren't good enough to be given bikes).

The new model LDS now allows women to represent them, at least as far as evangelizing is concerned. I've known mormon girls who've gone on missions overseas.

Never seen them on their bikes in my neighborhood, though.

Most of that is probably the deposit which goes toward your last month's payment and you are refunded the difference.

I had a rather nice discussion with two Jehovahs witnesses who came to my door, I had just got out of the shower and it was sunny outside, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and had a debate with them. It was rather nice, the girl who came to the door was rather taken aback by me being in dressing gown and slippers and still able to deliver the occasional pertinent point.

In other news, my whole family is ill at the moment and I have been at the gym for 2 hours and everything aches. Also, tomorrow I have to go to the most boring lecture imaginable.

so i just moved into a new house and get this: it came with not one, but two rope swings already installed!

i'm thinking about having another one put in just so you can never been more than a few steps away from fun wherever you are on the property.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Maybe the last tenants were swingers.

Re: Valentines day.

This valentines I will be dancing my arse off. Apparently I bought a ticket to the Good Vibes festival (it is a festival for dancing music) a while back and then forgot about it.

I think I have to wear some stupid sunglasses or something? Apparently it is mandatory.

Some Mormons were hanging around the university plaza one day when I was walking by, and asked if they could talk to me. I said I was busy (I was), they asked if they could come see me at home some time, I said sure, and gave them my address.
Maybe a month or two later, two ladies in dresses knocked on my door. I had just gotten up and was in the middle of cooking some lunch, so I came to the door topless holding a big chef's knife. I said hi, they said hi and asked if I was James, I said yes, they asked if they could talk to me or if this was a bad time and I said it was probably a bad time and then no one ever came here again.
I was kind of looking forwards to offering Mormons some tea and cookies or whatever they can have and seeing what they would say, but oh well.

My mother always invited Jehovah's Witnesses in - she felt she had a sacred duty to try to convert them to the proper church.  I tried arguing with them once - each time they produced a biblical quote, I compared it with three other translations as a debating point; it didn't get me anywhere, so I've never tried again.
