I have never in my life had a snow day.

A couple earthquake days, evacuated from school because of fire days, flood days.

Never snow.

My old high school once held the record for most bomb threats on any school in the country. Kids would write threats in the bathroom or on walls and the school would be evacuated for the day. I think this happened like 80 times my freshman year. Not kidding.

Jens, that is amazing.

Today we got to leave work an hour and a half early because of the snow turning into ice this afternoon. Tomorrow work is iffy as said ice will be turning back into snow. This is a good thing, because my 20 minute commute was turned into an hour commute coming home. I have never had a retail job before where the store would not open because of the weather. 2 years ago there was a level 2 advisory (don't drive unless you HAVE to) and I still had to go to work.

And I don't remember having my little tag below my icon saying, "I hate fun. And James Bond." It said, "I hate everything." Who be messin' with my profile, whut.

Today started off kind of crappy, I had some stomach problems and had a quiz that I didn't study at all.

Got better in the evening when we got to test the combustibility of oxygen.  Setting things on fire for science is always fun.

Dear blog thread,

My mother can't walk. Today pretty much sucks. It seriously just took her 5 minutes, with my help, to get her out of the chair she was in. JUST so she could go take a piss.

Man, Southern California's a DEATH TRAP.

Dear bloggery:
I am sort of seeing this chick, and I like her, but I can't stop thinking about my former friend in that "oh man, I wanna make hella kisses with him and hold his pale, vindictive hand" way. It is also possible that he and I will be at the same Akron/Family show soon, so I think if he is there, and I am drunk enough (sweet, sweet liquid courage) I will actually speak to him again and hopefully he won't destroy me.

This evening as I was in the elevator a stranger struck up a conversation with me.
During this conversation he told me I was a "hot bear".
I mentioned that I have a girlfriend.
On the one hand I'm flattered, on the other hand it was a tad unnerving.

Oh, man, I know what you can do.  I was watching Planet Earth, and David Attenborough explained how kangaroos in the Australian desert keep cool.  Their techniques are very effective!  Maybe they'll work for you, too.

They lick their arms and dig beneath the first layer of dirt and lay in little holes they've dug in the shade.  But be careful, because that can deplete your fluid supplies!  Make frequent trips to the watering hole (or, if you're particularly desperate, you can eat cactus flowers).

Actually, every time I go to the toilet in weather like this, after I've washed my hands I rub my hands dry on my arms and legs and face. Evaporative cooling is your friend!

I haven't got desperate enough to try the Flamingo "piss down your own leg" trick yet. But it's going to be 43 degrees again tomorrow so, hey, early days.

(you work at home, right?).

Fortunately the house is still reasonably comfortable. These old brick terrace houses have nice high ceilings and a good thermal mass. Unfortunately when the heat gets inside, which it probably will tomorrow, the house will be vile, and it'll take days to cool it down again (that thermal mass works both ways, unfortunately). Also, the house is really stuffy because we've had all the doors, windows and blinds shut for the last 48 hours.

It says quite a lot about the weather this week that I'm actually looking forward to Saturday, when it's forecast to be "only" 35 degrees Centigrade.

Shit. Anyone know how to pitch stories to a newspaper? 'Cause I really need to know by tomorrow.

Write a press release (google for the layout). Call up and ask for the relevant person (what section your story would be going in). Make sure to be very enthusiastic, excited, and use lots of positive and superfluous words like "fantastic, incredible" etc, do the same in your press release. It'll be quite likely that the person you want to talk to is busy, so get their contact info (phone, email) and try to talk to them later (ask when a good time to call would be).

i've been spending my friday afternoons at cfru, the radio station i volunteer at, listening to music and sorting their library which is massive and undergoing some crazy reorganization right now. lots of moving things around and sticking tiny coloured labels to things. i'm stupid busy enough as is but it's strangely calming, it's alright.

they have a "no nickelback" policy they are pretty proud of. unfortunately this was proven wrong a few days ago when i somehow stumbled across a copy of their very first album curb which i guess they had sent to the station way back when they were still establishing themselves as the worst pile of shit band ever. it's in perfect condition and i don't think it's ever been played cos no one knew it existed. i showed it to the librarian and he thought it was pretty funny but also, understandably, wanted it out of the library immediately. we were going to throw it in the garbage but then he looked it up for fun and it turns out we have the independent release which has been out of print for years and is apparently really valuable! so now i think they are going to try to sell and give the money to the station. ridiculous.

Ten minutes ago, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, it was 44.9 degrees Centigrade here in Melbourne. FORTY-FOUR-POINT-NINE.

Fortunately in the house is still relatively "cool" - feels like around thirty degrees, high twenties maybe. I spent two hours in the library this afternoon and since getting back home I've been cradling my little desk-top fan non-stop. My housemate and I are watching Attenborough's Life in the Freezer, trying to fool our brains into thinking it's cold.

Me and a few people I know play this game called "Dark Heresy". It plays like Dungeons & Dragons in essence, but is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I GMed my first game a little while ago and it turned out splendidly.

There were two players: a Guardsman and an Assassin.

The basic briefing is that an Inquisitorial operative disappeared from the area recently, and it was their task to find and recover him. Or, if need be, return with his head. The Inquisition does not easily forget acts of treachery. The players were given trackers that would locate the operative (named "Crowley"). So, I set the players down on a Hive World in a supply cruiser to maintain secrecy for their cause and we began.

The best moments of this session include:

- When the players were attacked by troublemakers, Guardsman shot one in the head and ended up blowing it off, but not without the body catching fire and frightening the everliving hell out of the crowd (and, funnily enough, lighting plenty of them on fire). In the same battle, Assassin got his leg broken and had to sit out for five days.

- Going on from the above, Guardsman knew he couldn't carry out the mission alone, so to pass the time, he went on a drug run. And made, like, 50 thrones.

- When the players found "Crowley", they ended up finding a computer chip that was embedded within him. Upon viewing the information stored within, they found that he was consorting with a Genestealer Cult. The surroundings of the video data suggested wealth and ease of living. Thus, to the Upper Hive they went.

- Ah, getting by the guards. During his drug run, Guardsman had to buy his way past them, but got away with paying in dud money. This time, the guards guarding the Upper Hive major thoroughfare were wise to him. Assassin managed to intimidate them, though.

- When the players tracked Crowley to a large estate, Guardsman hid in nearby foilage while Assassin had a very awkward conversation with a house servant. It went like this:

"Master Arkady is busy at the current moment. Come back later, perhaps?"
"Sorry for, uh... bothering... you?"

Clearly, Assassin was expecting to be greeted by something truly nasty.

- The players came back at nightfall and silently disposed of the doorman. They successfully snuck in and found Crowley sipping wine with Arkady, who promptly had the players imprisoned when they announced themselves. And all their equipment confiscated.

- Crowley visited the players during their confinement and offered to initiate them into the cult. Guardsman knocked him unconscious and took his cell keys while pretending to give him a handshake. Classic. The players didn't get their gear back, though.

From here on out, this needs to become a continuous story.

During the escape, the players ended up in the master bedroom. There was a window, on relative ground-level. They used Crowley to break the glass (and test the fall). Upon finding that the ground was a safe drop from the window, they exited and stole an open-topped ground vehicle with a heavy stubber mounted on the top.

The alarms went on. Cue car-chase, with Assassin manning the heavy stubber while Guardsman drives, Crowley still unconscious in the passenger seat. Not long into the chase, an Inquisitorial transport flies overheard, and the players get a radio signal to follow. They do so, and are eventually greeted to the "road" (insofar as it could be called that) giving way and the transport lined up with the chasm, its small vehicle bay wide open.

Guardsman does the obvious thing and uses the car to jump into the vehicle bay. Mission accomplished. The players go to the cockpit to thank the pilot. He simply asks them to sort out the vehicle bay door, which appears to be slightly malfunctioning. So they go back to the vehicle bay.

The players check out the door and get it back in order. Suddenly, out of the darkness, a claw swipes at Assassin and disappears again. A Genestealer drops from the ceiling in front of the vehicle bay exit. With no weapons and no armour, the players seem quite defeated. But not quite. Guardsman opens the vehicle bay door (which faces straight behind the spacecraft), waiting for the Genestealer to attack. The Genestealer itself jumps onto the bonnet of the escape vehicle.
Clearly, Assassin didn't get Guardsman's idea, as he sped forward, threw an arm into the vehicle and disengaged the brake, so the vehicle slid backwards towards the opening.

The Genestealer simply hopped off the vehicle. FFFFFUUUUUUUUU--

This is when Guardsman committed the most incredible act known to roleplay. He jumped into the reversing vehicle , fired the heavy stubber into the Genestealer, killing it, and jumped out in time to grab onto an outer-railing and be pulled up by Assassin. They took a moment to catch their breath, looked down at the hive surface and closed the bay door. Looking at one another, the same thought hit them:

Blog Thread II, I am too scared to ask out a girl. For now. I'll overcome this in like, an hour.

Dear blog thread,

Today, hopefully, I'll have another meetup with the people with whom I'm writing music for a musical. We did this for the first time earlier this week, and between the three of us we came up with some pretty awesome shit. We also had a really really good time, a better time than I actually ever anticipated. I am pretty sure there'll be another meetup on Monday, at very least. I really can't wait though, I am already kindof addicted to it.

Love,
Me!

Dear Blog thread,

I have to go to the bathroom so bad(#2)... but I know it's going to take more than 5 minutes and I only have 4 minutes till break.  I hate waiting.

On a less stinky note, I am going snowboarding with my roomate and my brother this weekend.  My roommate and myself are bother bringing our girlfriends.  My girlfriend is bringing her roommate.  My roommate's gf is pregnant and my gf's rommate is pregnant.  This is funny because I know my brother isn't getting laid all weekend.

unless he tries getting with my girl... in which case I better be able to watch in the corner!

For some reason I decided to go visit my family this weekend. I wasn't entirely looking forward to this in the first place, but I thought I would bring my laptop and the wireless internet plug-thing and at least would be able to talk to people.

I sit on a stupid train for three hours, have to wait at my dodgy station for my brother to pick me up, my dad's being an irritating jerk straight away (and somehow I hurt his feelings because I said I wasn't hungry when i wasn't hungry), and when I decide to have some sort of drink to try and make the night less shitty, I find that dad has gone into my room when I was away and drunk all my alcohol. All of it. Those 10 VB bottles from last time he sobered up? The bottle of malibu that Ro got me and I feel guilty about drinking? That bottle of sour apple stuff that tastes foul by itself? The other beers I accumulated from various parties? The shitty banana liqueur that i got as a birthday present (it was made to be Hannah Banana liqueur)? All Fucking Gone. This is why I need a goddamn lock on my door.

Plus the network stuff is shit around here so the wireless thing only works in the lounge room and is at broadband speed and will drop out for no reason occasionally. I have two more days of this fucking shitstain of a visit and I want to go back to Sydney right now, even though I can't really.

Why did I think moving home for uni would be a good thing? Because I'm a fucking idiot, that's why.

At 4:27p.m. today the heat-wave here in Melbourne peaked with a temperature of 45.1 degrees Centigrade. Apparently the hottest day on record for Melbourne was 45.6 degrees. I am not disappointed that we didn't break the record.

About an hour after that the wind changed and the temperature started dropping. Ten minutes ago the Bureau of Meteorology had the temperature at 25.2 degrees, and I've got all the doors and windows of the house open because there's the most wonderful sea-breeze I've ever felt blowing through the city. It's set to get up to 37 degrees tomorrow, but fuck it, if I can go outside without feeling like my eyeballs are about to burst then I'm going to be happy. This has been the most vile three days of weather I've ever experienced - in fact, it's the worst run for over 100 years in Melbourne. Last night it was so hot that I went to bed clutching an ice-pack. With the breeze blowing off the sea instead of out of the desert the humidity has soared, but hell, it's only 25 degrees.
