Congratulations on the cooling, please send excess warmth to the UK, its freakin' freezing here.

Also: dear blog thread, am up and about despite the fact that I fell asleep far too late and after a stupid amount of vodka. I am now going to town to get myself stuff for dinner, and then I am going to the gym. I am just finding it rather strange and rather fun to be busy.

Also, anyone know what I can do with chopped tommato, chicken, sweetcorn and rice? Was planning on cooking them al together (well except the rice ofc) but I am more than happy to hear what other people have to say so I don't poison myself.

It is worth noting that "freezing" in the UK has a different meaning from elsewhere.  I have been perfectly comfortable (sensibly wrapped up) in -20C in northern Sweden; but the UK has a special kind of cold that freezes you from inside starting with the bone marrow, regardless of your clothing, even when water is still liquid.  Mind you, I am still cycling to work with open sandals and no socks, but I am only exposed for 8 minutes doing that.

But when I get to work, the heating is faulty in my area...  It's a big building, so it's not bad really - nothing like what's required to invoke our law that says that if the temp at work doesn't reach 16C within an hour of the start of work you are entitled to go home without penalty (but they don't have to pay you either, which seems a pretty big penalty to me).

Brrr!

Not long after a refreshing cool change hit the city (I have to say, I hope it never gets to that temperature again. Official temperature was 46.5 C., but in some places it was recorded as 48 C.), somebody must have decided to punish us even further, cutting power to the whole city. The radio stations, traffic lights, everything but places that had their own power (hospital), was down. We couldn't even stop to refuel the car, because the bowsers needed electricity to work. I just barely made it back home with the petrol in the tank.

I didn't ask her out, because she might have a boyfriend, but hang outs were offered (mutually even) the next time we both have the same night off. Hopefully she does not have a boy in her life and then I will be the boy in her life.

OK, it's not entirely true; there is no provision for leaving work - but there is clear definition of what is "unreasonable", and your employers are committing an offense if they don't provide you with the means to warm yourself.  In principle, you can threaten them with a prosecution or, alternatively, apply for a civil injunction requiring them to comply with the legal duty. The latter could also provide specific compensation as well.

The relevant legislation is section 6 of the Offices Shops & Railway Premises Act 1963. The appropriate bits say -
Quote
(2) Where a substantial proportion of the work done in a room to which the foregoing subsection applies does not involve severe physical effort, a temperature of less than 16 degrees Celsius (61F) shall not be deemed, after the first hour, to be a reasonable temperature while work is going on.

(3)...there shall be provided for persons who are employed to work in a room to which... this section would apply, conveniently accessible and effective means of enabling them to warm themselves.

(6)It shall be the duty of the employer of persons for whom means of enabling them to warm themselves are provided in pursuance of subsection (3) of this section to afford them reasonable opportunities for using those means, and if he fails so to do he shall be guilty of an offence."

See here also.

You have been given a "sleep with me card", choose your next move carefully, if its completly meaningless and you might be friends go ahead. But otherwise... tread carefully.

Also, don't worry, its hardly as if you have school tommorrow now is it?

Okay, well just "good luck" in general then.

I was just wondering, why is everyone so angry at the moment? All these negative posts, just seems a little odd.

Sam you should totally do it. All of it.

Dear blog thread,

Instead of leaving on the 6th, I leave Monday for my U.S. trip. Apparently my mom managed to convince the doc to tell the Gub'mint that it'd really be best if she got medical attention for her knee back home in the States rather than here. So we're leaving a couple days early, her appointments have been made, and I get to see D.C. for a little bit before heading to Alaska for the month.

Downside: I will not have time to meet up with any QCers in the area even though I would love to make arrangements. I just will not have time. :(

Love,
Me!

Dear blog thread,

We have been having the 2nd largest blackout in the history of the state this last week. My house is without power and has been since Wednesday morning. I am staying with my house mate's folks. Which is actually not too bad, because they have a nice house and plenty of room for us. Still, I hope my house gets power back soon.

Also, the driver side inside door handle on my car broke off my door yesterday. I can't find a used one anywhere and the dealership is going to charge me about $130 for a new one. We're talking about maybe a dollars worth of plastic here.

So this has not been a good week for me.

Dear Bloggy Downey Jr. II,

My girlfirend and I broke up. Also, I no longer have a job.

Oddly enough, I genuinely believe both of these things are for the best in the long term and I'm not really worried about things. Well, the break up is/was pretty terrible but honestly we both made each other miserable towards the end so it was kind of a mutual agreement that shit wasn't getting any better. Or at least that's what I keep telling myself. Um.

Warm regards,

-Nick.

Guys, the one Friday night I actually have a life and go out with my friends, my car gets towed because I maybe overextended my stay in the metered lot by 5-10 minutes. So what was an excellent dinner followed by the best bubble tea I've ever had (it was almond flavored and had amazing, chewy bubbles for once) was ruined by my car disappearing, spending about half an hour outside waiting for a bus and then digging out one of my friend's car to get to the lot where it was taken. Luckily the lot was a 24 hour lot, because I have to open the store in the morning tomorrow, and also it was lucky I got paid today. The upside is my 3 companions offered to chip in money for the towing fee.

Fucking fuck wut fuck?!

Okay, apparently I'm in the doghouse for something I quite clearly did that I have zero recollection of doing.

Not a matter of "Oh hey, I got so drunk I forgot what I did," no. Just a matter of I DIDN'T FUCKING DO THAT!!!

So, now I'm going to go do that out of sheer rage mixing in with the alright absolutely fucking miserable mood I was in. Because if I don't, I'm going to fucking break a wall down in my apartment.

Because I don't have enough shit on my mind, what with losing my fucking job when I was already extremely stressed out, I need someone either mistaking or outright god damn imagining something I did. FUCKING FUCK!

HOW THE FUCK AM I INVOLVED IN A FIGHT THAT I AM NOT EVEN QUITE SURE WHEN IT STARTED?!

My friend at work got screwed because someone got the idea that I had switched with someone else, and so when I didn't show up on time, they called and asked if I was coming in, and when I said, yeah at 12:30, they said, no, you need to be here 15 minutes ago, you switched. On my way to work I ran over a vinyl flag with a piece of metal coming off, so I had to stop and tear that from under my car, then, finally, I get to work and there is no parking. In addition to this, my coworker is pretty inept and takes three times as long to do the same tasks I do. But she is personable, so they hired her. BUT SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO USE A FUCKING COMPUTER.

It's an ungodly hour of the morning for a Saturday, but I am up anyway.  This is because I'm about to go play with brand-new Magic cards that have never been played with before.   I intend to win.  Wish me luck.

Dear blog thread,

I am going to a Super Bowl party on Sunday and I just realized I have no clue who is playing, because, well, the Raiders aren't playing and they are the only team I give two shits about. I am going to wear black and white face paint just to be a dick.

I just looked it up. Cardinals vs. Steelers. Meh. I'll stick around until halftime is over.

Also, it is less than a week before I get to see my girl, and I am hellof nervous about it. I don't know what's going onnnnnnn HALP PLZ

Well, we are not exactly a greek chorus over here, we don't know whats going on either.

If your seeing your girl, be polite, take her somewhere nice (parks during the day, nice italian resturant at night) have a few drinks if you are staying in, or go to a nice bar and have a fun night. Just try and enjoy it.

I am now off to finish a mini-essay on the Rise of Violent Nationalism in Kenya and Southern Rhodeisa in the mid 1950's. Have a good day everyone and do try and have some fun, it is the weekend afterall.

Jace, it's in Alaska. If he showed up pantsless his cock would freeze and fall off.

Blogg-ed, I have two issues.

1. The trackpad on my Macbook stopped working. I bought a mouse for it. Now the trackpad works again. But if I return the mouse, I'm sure the trackpad will stop working again, out of spite.

2. I have a friend at school who I'm kind of interested in, and I think maybe she also likes me. This is pretty awesome! (Also it seems we are both going to Boston over spring break and will likely have some awesome Beantown-style hangouts.)

It has been really fucking slow at work lately and they have been cracking down on the sheer number of smoke breaks we've taken as a result, and so now as a replacement we have been working on our high fives and dance moves at work a lot lately. High fives have improved significantly. Dance moves have not.

Dear Blog thread

Have just spent the last hour or so talking to a best friend who is preparing on doing a pole dance routine to "she wants revenge". Did not feel anything, also learned that one of my housemates had an... encounter with a girl outside of sainsburies last night. Yet I did not feel jealous.

I think I may have gone completly insane because of this, can someone please clarify.

Thanks for your time

Today, I said goodbye to my imaginary friend. Its a complicated story.

So, I met a guy. And things were great. Except he was always busy so we could never hang out. But we talked and talked and talked for hours every night. And things were good. I liked talking to him and it got rid most of my loneliness.

And one night I decided that he was imaginary, and he agreed. So we became imaginary friends.

Yesterday he got a job offer in a different town. So he is leaving. And basically, say good bye to you imaginary friend is very weird.

And I should a)stop reading fantasy books, and watching fantasy flims, and b)stop reading so much. I fucking romantisize everything. I blame this on reading more often than I breathe.

If that were true then The Princess Bride would not be the best story ever told which is, quite clearly, inconceivable.

The Princess Bride is a work of fiction. Works of fiction often lie to us. They often lead us to believe that life is meant to be a particular way, full of romance and weirdness, when in fact life is very often not like that at all. Then sometimes we get depressed because our life is not what we've been led to believe life is meant to be like.

Sometimes being grown-up means saying goodbye to romance and weird stuff. Maybe that sucks, but maybe it means you're ready to stop messing around with silly stuff and engage with your life on a deeper and more honest and fulfilling level, too. Maybe.

In any case, don't confuse life and fiction. Only bad things will happen.

I actually cried when my Hogwarts letter didn't arrive on my eleventh birthday. That is what fiction does to you, people.

I have spent the entire afternoon exchanging emails with my sociology teacher. She has sent me 28 emails in under two hours. I hope the college never take it upon themselves to monitor their staff's socialising or she'll probably be fired, or at least placed under investigation. But it is totally innocent and highly amusing.

It's snowed a little bit on and off all day, and I'm hoping it won't snow hard overnight and snow me in because tomorrow is the first informal open mic at college and I'm really looking forwards to it. When I first arrived at the college there was really nothing much to do at all, but in the last year and a half they've hired a new Enrichment coordinator who makes things happen and also the aforementioned sociology teacher who motivates other people to make things happen (it's her influence on me that means this open mic thing is happening, and she set up the college paper). It's really great to be seeing the start of a load of things that could last and last and really make our college a proper community instead of a collection of people who wander in every day or so for about two years and then leave without a backward glance.

I must admit I got over mister potter by the 5th book, wherein he began acting like a complete tool, and looked as if he needed a good idiot clip upside his head. I mean heck, Batman doesn't spend that long moaning about his dead parents whilst being an intolerable arse.

Anyway, I am being healthy. I made chicken soup, and have been eating well for quite a while, and tomorrow I go to the gym, Hooray!

dear blog thread,

this past week i have been feeling even less energetic than usual and it worries me because i am not sick or depressed as far as i know.  nor am i sleep deprived or malnutrioned.  so i have no idea why simple tasks like going to buy groceries seem to wear me out now (not in a getting-out-of-breath-because-i'm-out-of-shape sense, i just feel strangely drowsy afterwards)

it is 2 pm and i seriously feel like going back to sleep but i can't cause i have a date in an hour and we are going to the movies and hopefully watching slumdog millionaire which i have wanted to see for a while now. i guess i could just grab a coffee/energy drink on the way to the movie theatre? i normally try to limit my caffeine consumption, but i can't think of any other short term solutions.

see you later internet.

love,
anna

About Potter, that makes me realize I have the last book on my book shelf for about a year and never actually opened it.

Dear, Blog Thread, Jr.:

I have to eat breakfast everyday, since I'm insanely tired these days. And I have a gym exam tomorrow morning and I don't want to barf because I didn't have breakfast..

b)stop reading so much. I fucking romantisize everything. I blame this on reading more often than I breathe.

Yeah we definitely need more people in the world who don't read books.

EDIT: Emaline I am not entirely lucid at the moment so I won't/can't go into specifics but it bums me out so much when you get all depressive and hearing about how little stuff goes your way because you are Good People and you deserve to be showered in good times and caring attentive people.

Blog thread,

I tried to break up with Tara last night, because I really can't go on constantly being away from her. I explained it to her in every way I knew how, but she still wouldn't let me end it. I still love the girl but I can't handle hurting her by being gone anymore. I'd rather we both just moved on and, you know, actually enjoyed our lives.

But now I'm stuck so I guess I'll just deal. I'm gonna be there for a month starting in a week. I'll get to see her, but then I just have to leave again, pretty much making the trip shittier. She knows I don't want to deal with it anymore, too, which is just going to make shit awkward. And she has demanded for months on end that she sleep with me, and man, now I can't do it in good conscience.

Valentine's Day is gonna suck donkey balls.

Today has actually been a relatively good day! I got up at around 10AM, which is early considering it's a Sunday, and then I just relaxed for like 2 hours, which was a nice start to the day. I went skiing for about an hour and a half, which was great but also sort of humiliating. Little kids kept going past me, but they were like super sporty kids with proper skiing equipment and sporty parents and that kind of stuff that makes me feel sort of like a failure, but anyways - I worked out and didn't hate it. It was hella cold, though, and my asthma-tendencies do not like exercising in cold weather, but some Ventoline took care of that. After that I got some studying done, but I think I may actually have found a subject that is more boring than exphil (which is like, philosophy history kinda?) but a whole lot more difficult.. Sucks. Aanyways, I also got some knitting done and then a batch of laundry, so yay.

I'm going to the doctor on Friday, though, and I'm super nervous. I'm 22, and I've never been to the doctor before. Scary. Do I just..say hi and then tell him about my issues? Weird.

Mari you have seriously never been to the doctor in 22 years? I'm... I'm speechless. But to answer your question, yes that is what you do. He will have heard it all before. He will probably have put his hand up ladies' bottoms, there isn't much you can say that will shock a doctor who has been in practice for more than a few years.

As for Patrick (ITT: I am a wise sage), it sounds to me like breaking up with Tara would be worse than staying with her. Don't break up with her right before you spend a month in her vicinity at the very least. You're not marrying the girl. Jeez. (I am less frustrated with you than I sound, but I would like to sound more frustrated than I do.)

I keep trying to post in here about stuff that is going on in my head about one of my teachers but I can't find any words that don't sound inane or childish. So I guess I will not post it.

Nope, I haven't. Is that weird? My dad's a doctor and my mom's a nurse, and seeing as I've never been seriously ill, there's never been any need for it, as I'd get necessary medication and/or "nope, nothing's broken or seriously hurt" from them. Or, well, I went once, but only to pick up a prescription that he had written for me after my mom did allergy and asthma tests on me at work.

And it's not so much telling him about health-issues that's weird to me, as I know he's most likely heard it all before, it's just the whole.. "Hi! I've never met you before, but I'm gonna go ahead and just tell you a bunch of stuff about me!" that seems slightly awkward. I'm not really sure what I'm nervous about, I guess I just tend to get nervous in unknown situations, and also I hope there's nothing seriously wrong with me.

I have parents in the same vocations and I developed the exact opposite perspective - medical matters are not and should not be terribly embarrassing to discuss, especially with medical professionals. You gain nothing from hesitation, and you could harm yourself.

But I guess that's what happens when you just don't get sick.

I'm sorry that things are always crappy for me, Dovey. I try to make them better but I always fail. Um... here is a list of good things that happened to me this morning.

I found $40(that I thought I had spent)
I ate some bacon
I did a load of laundry
I have a dog
I talked to my friend Jake
My friends Sara and Jon want to hang out
The bacon got rid of my hangover
The sun came up
My dog did not attack anyone this morning when I let her out
When I woke up, I was snuggling my stuffed monkey
I started preparing dinner for tonight(its a roast!)
I sang
I decided that Jake and Davis and Sara and Jon probably love me
I decided that I have alright boobs
I haven't smoked yet today
My bed was exceptionally comfy this morning.
The sunlight, reflecting off the snow, and shining through my blinds, showered my room in a blueish hint and it was very pretty and comforting
I left a candle burning last not, and not only did it not burn my house down or set off any smoke dectors, but it made my whole house smell like cookies
I found and enjoyed some tasty cookies my friend Davis made me
I cleaned out my refrigerator

Also, Inlander hit the nail on the head about the romantisizing and whatnot. As my friend Jake said, I've fallen out of the catagory of human being, and into the catagory of apperciated thing. No want really wants to be friends with the people they think are cool in movies. And that's what I am. I'm a character in a book, and person in a movie. I'm not a real person. And I need to remind people that I am, apparently. According to Jake.
