I know you're probably all sick of me blog-threading about Melbourne's weather, but today's official forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology has to be shared:

Apparently today Melbourne is a femme fatale.

My parents are out of the country for sixteen days. Everyone is off at Super Bowl things, and I don't give a shit about the Super Bowl, so I am at home cooking a lasagna, toasting Bagel Bites to eat before the lasagna, and I put in Back to the Future to run in the background while I study for history. And I'm in my pajamas!

Today is an okay day.

Man, I wish I had the stuff to make lasagna, that sounds quite delicious right now. I could do spaghetti I guess but that is just not the same. I am also not watching the Super Bowl and I really don't want to, so I will just sit in my apartment by myself and watch movies, I guess.

buh

I hate watching football so I guess its a good thing I dont care about it. I gotta write a little paper on fight club tonight and fisnish up one comparing dumb religious doctrine. Plus at band practice on Saturday my band accomplished practically nothing since my reverb pedal decided not to work and then we just dicked around.

So I feel kind of shitty right now. Eh, whatever though.

Hi Blog thread.

So, I got offered the internship I was after with this magazine. I'm pretty happy about it, but they couldn't give me a position until April. Which is somewhat inconvenient, as the internship is full-time for at least four weeks and unpaid. I can't really look for another lab job now, as requiring four weeks off will rule me out straight away, and nor can I work as a demonstrator at Uni part-time, which was my other plan. I also go back to studying in March, but will be part-time, and won't qualify for government assistance.

So I guess I'll be either a) living off my savings b) getting the dole or c) going back to casual hospitality work.

I'm currently excitement mixed with confusion. Woooo?

P.S. Romance and weirdness are great and fine things in life so long as you do not let them give you unreasonable expectations. The best relationship I've ever had was a romantic and weird one, I have to say, and I would not like to be without these things just because they might be considered juvenile by some.

I wish my friends would call me and play recorder.

Actually, once a friend of mine left a message on my phone that was composed of ambient jungle noises. It was pretty great.

My best friend once rang up just to sing 'I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts' on my phone.  Then she constantly rang back and left little messages until she filled up my entire answering machine.  It was the best thing to come home to!

Guys it seems my housing troubles are over, I  have been approved for a tiny shoebox in Newtown.
However because I am a whore, this afternoon I also applied to two different studios in a building in Surry Hills. They are not as nice, but they are closer to work (I can walk there!) and closer to Oxford St and such and they are in a lovely neighbourhood WITH NO PLANE NOISE. I am kind of hoping I do not get approved for them though because then I would feel really bad about having to ring up the other lady and cancel and oh god I'll find out tomorrow anyway and then I move next Tuesday this is madness!

I had a dream in which the day came when troupes of actors were slaughtered by their understudies, magicians sawn in half by indefatigably smiling glamour girls, cricket teams wiped out by marauding bands of twelfth men and an army of assistants and deputies, the seconds-in-command, the runners up, the right-hand men stormed palace gates rising above their superiors or supposed betters to show that they do in fact count.

Snow!  Well, what the Met Office calls "a serious adverse weather event".  In fact it's only an inch or two, and still falling - but it's quite pretty.  My office has a window, so I'm watching it now.

My bike's brake cable must be damp, because it froze up on the way to work.  Oops.  And the lock was frozen when I got there, so I haven't been able to lock the bike up either.

Dear blog thread,

Two nights ago, I was at a party. I talked to this one girl about the Joe Satriani/Coldplay situation, saying that I had to side with Joe Satriani, since guitarists have to stick together against the BIG BAD WORLD.

She then informed me that Coldplay have a guitarist.

This had never occurred to me before.

Dear guys,

My flight got cancelled due to snow. So we will be a day late when my mom and I finally arrive in DC. Upside: I don't have to deal with snow, fuck snow.

Still though, I'd have liked to have spent a day in a place where they speak English all pretty instead of getting routed through Munich and having to hear that miserable, uninspiring, homogenized DC accent as my first re-exposure to the English language.

Love,
Me!

P.S. also I am annoyed because I look all pretty today and now I don't get to look pretty tomorrow because my pretty clothes will be dirty and in my suitcase, fuck you London

Blogocles,
Today has been a spectacularly awful day already and it's only quarter after 9! I see this as today's one real accomplishment. I am tired, I lost my cell phone (dropped it on the bus; I know this in my gut), and now I am so angry about having lost my phone that I cannot focus on cramming for a Classics test I have in 3 hours. Why do I care about Athens? Or Sparta?

Hint: I don't.

Really, there is not that much snow. I was giggling to myself as I watched the news and a very serious reporter stood in front of about two centimetres of snow and a steady fall that looked as if someone was just shaking sugar over him, and reported on the "serious weather conditions" and "extremely heavy blizzard conditions".

Seriously. Things are worse further south, and for some reason London decided to completely shut down this morning, but up here? We haven't even had a full inch yet.

I have contacts in Hackney - apparently Hackney scheduled its road salting and gritting for tomorrow  as an economy measure, which is why the buses couldn't run through it today.

Much of the snow in Oxford has melted; it was much more fun last Novemeber.

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. Does anyone mind if I stab my english TA in her fat fucking face? I found the ONE SINGLE SECTION of the english class I am required to take in order to graduate that does not overlap with my other classes, does not fuck my work schedule, and is not a 20 minute uphill hike from every other class I take.
And what does she do? Decides she doesn't like walking to the math building and switches the classroom to the other fucking end of campus. I race to my next class and barely make it as it is, and she fucking moved it an additional 15-20 minute walk away. And she's fucking over the whole class! It's TECHNICAL WRITING. Every person in that class is an engineering/comp sci/biology major! ALL OF OUR CLASSES ARE ON THE OPPOSITE END OF THE WORLD THAN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT. Thus we chose your fucking section and were willing to stay in it despite the fact that you're a fat psycho asshat.

I know I know, third world problems. But fucking ARG I do not have room in my schedule for this bullshit!

Stab, stab, stab away! Stabbing is great stress relief. Also, mandatory english classes fucking blow, I'm stuck in one that I absolutely do not need, and it bores me to the brink of brain death thrice weekly.

Blog thread, today I made up with one of my very close friends, with whom things had been iffy for the past week or so. I'm happy about this. Also, I'm tired but I have to read more Plato bluhh.

Two weeks ago I took my general exam, which was 8 hours of testing split over two days. It was on ANY topic in microbiology that the professors felt light asking. Only 50% of grad students pass it their first time taking it. It was hell.

Today I was told that I passed! I'm really excited!

Overheard at work:

Girl holding most recent Lil Wayne album: "this is a picture of him as a baby, right?"
Boyfriend: "yeah"
Girl:"......I just don't get why    you'd tattoo a baby. That just seems ...mean."

Woman wearing stretch pants: "what the name of that 300 rip off? Oh yeah! Beowulf!"

I weep for humanity sometimes. This woman had a husband and a kid. That kid  is going to grow up thinking that Beowulf is a rip off of fucking 300. Sigh.

They're both bad movies based on much older stories, I don't see what's so 'I weep for humanity' about that.

There is much to weep about. That kid is going to grow up not only only knowing Beowulf as some crappy movie, but thinking it is a crappy rip off of another crappy movie.

Which brings me to... kids are going to grow up watching movies instead of reading books. This depresses the hell out of me. I grew up and had bookshelf after bookshelf after bookshelf over flowing with books. I remember just sorting through thousands of boxes stuff with books. Nowadays, kids can just go see the movie. Where is the fun in that? That leaves nothing to the imagination, and cuts out all the good parts. Its so depressing. Imagination and individuality seems to be frowned upon these days.

But of course...looking what reading my entire life did to me. I have my head in the clouds constantly. Everything is magical, nothing is real, I get attatched to ghosts. Even people who treat me terribly can be knights in shining armor if they just say the right words, nevermind the fact that they seem to actively dislike me, and are very standoffish, and noncaring. They are just like that one character in that one book! And that makes everything ok. Even Garp had his flaws. Even Holden was kind of a jerk.

This is not a proper way to think, and my book reading has made have impossible dreams, and has made me weird, and strange and oddly romantic, and it has had dire consequences on my real life. Life is not, and will never be a fairy tale. The good guys don't always win in the end. The prince doesn't always save the princess, or even want to. No one ends up with a spouse, and kids, and a perfect little house, with straight white picket fence, and a golden retriver named Rover or Spot.

See, much to weep about.

Yep. Reading is to blame for your laundry list of personality problems and character flaws.

I bought a fridge today. This is basically the first responsible purchase I have ever made, I expected to feel more grown up or something? Either way it's a pretty cool fridge.
Also I'm thinking of going for my bike license? I figure it will cost less than buying a car, even with all the gear, and it will make me look even cooler. I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do now that I am not going to be studying this year. I should probably tell my folks at some point so I can get used to the disappointment but yeah, I'll do that later.

The next generation are not suddenly a bunch of idiots who won't even look at a book, there were just as many kids who hated reading back when we were young as there are now, and just as many kids who love reading today.

I'm not even going to get in to the second part except to say that books are not the cause of your problems emaline, abysmally low self esteem is, I grew up reading just as many books as you (hell we had a library in our house for a while) and I don't hate myself or let anyone treat me like shit.

That's funny; books turned me into a skeptic.

For what it's worth, there's also more than a few linguists out there who'd point out that kids are very rarely less literate than previous generations. Rather, they just adhere to different standards and emphasize different media. For example, look at texting. People spell words "incorrectly" when texting, but a lot of the times those abreviations are intentional and internally consistent; in order to effectively use text messaging shorthand you need a certain basic understanding of language to begin with or else your message won't be clear; the thought process is closer to creating your own pidgin on the fly rather than simply babbling. Whether grammar nazis like it or not, such a development is closer to an example of how language is pressed into service by each generation rather than a display of idiocy. You can be upset about it if you like, but you may as well realize now that worrying about it is as about as productive as walking down the beach and telling the tide to pack that shit in.

Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the ring.

The movie is definitely quicker than the book. It is so hard to read a book about walking. Just hobbits walking places.

or tom "stop the plot, we need rhymes" bombadil, jesus that was an irritating part of a good story. I actually prefered the radio play and the films over the books, mainly because of all the songs and poems and dullness, but also because tolkien wrote Gimli and Legolas as scenery that killed orcs.

Anywaaaaay, back on topic, this is the blog thread after all. Have just woken up, had breakfast and am now sat all snuggly warm in bed before having to go out and face the cold.

i grew up reading too but i don't think films are inherently inferior to books. there are some very good films and likewise, some very terrible books. i'd much prefer for someone to be really into good films than really into those twilight books or harry potter or whatever. then again it isn't really my business what people do for fun and i'm sure people who read those twilight books can still grow up to be awesome people despite the fact that those books seem sort of stupid to me so whatever i guess?

FACT: Snowball fights are awesome. Snowball fights when half of college wanders outside to attack one another? Double awesome.

(p.s. I got moderately excited because I thought you had the same birthday as me, but then I realised you're probably still in yesterday, and I'm in today.)

(p.p.s I love how timezones make it sound like I've actually time travelled into the future. Which I guess I have. Um.)

Hey, don't worry! You share a birthday with me!

Guys today I am an adult! To celebrate this I helped out in a PGCE (post-graduate certificate in education, trainee teachers bascially) lesson, teaching them research skills. It was awesome! I have had an awesome day and I feel like celebrating by eating a big mountain of mashed potato, spinach and poached eggs which my mum cooked specially. :-D

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

We're all getting so old!

I was going to go back and edit my last post but never mind. It's my birthday, and I'll double-post if I want to.

It was funny in the PGCE class because everyone there is already a teacher at the college on one of the various campuses, and in the second group I was with there were two sports teachers from my campus who kept being distracted and texting and stuff, and didn't take kindly to being told to concentrate and put their phones away! The other woman found it very funny, she thinks I should go into teaching (I shouldn't).

I felt very loved today, it was really nice. Last year my birthday was absolutely shit, really really crappy (I was crying by eleven am) so anything would have been an improvement really but today was wonderful. All my friends gave me cards and we had a party with cake and cookies and it was just generally really nice and friendly. And I had a nice chat with a friend who teaches the disabled students life skills, and is absolutely lovely and supportive and who suggested she goes to see my head of school to talk about getting me extra help with my exams. So generally a lovely, cossetted day with the people I love :-)

Dearest Bloggles,

So I have finally got my little life plan (or next few years plan) all sorted out, but it is making me completely miserable because I know I can't do it yet!  Basically in 6 months I am going to America and England for a month, and when I get back I am going to apply for publishing/advertising jobs in Sydney, move there and most likely live with lunchy.  I honestly cannot wait to have a real job, and real hours, and be a normal person in a big city.  This is after years of terror at the thought of these things.

Unfortunately, I hate my current job so much, and I keep looking at jobs in Sydney now, even though I know I can't realistically apply for them until after I get back from overseas because I will not be able to afford to move to Sydney and save money for travel, and I consider it bad form to be in a job for 6 months then be all LOLS SEE YOU IN A MONTH LOLS.  So every day  I get up for work at 4:30am, and go and perform my menial tasks, and deal with the fucking stupid customers, stack shelves, do orders, lift heavy things and generally feel completely miserable about the fact that I am trapped in the hell hole of despair and bitterness that is my job!

GOD WHY WONT TIME JUST PASS QUICKER.

Also fucking Lux Interior from The Cramps died :(

hey blog thread.

i went to a career fair today and it was sort of stupid for the following two reasons -

- everything is electronic now, every single hiring representative i spoke to told me to go to their website and wouldn't even glance at my resume and
- the shuttle bus system they had going to and from guelph was a completely disorganized mess. they were supposed to have buses running every 30 minutes and instead they just sort of showed up whenever they felt like it, usually more along the lines of every 60-80 minutes. furthermore, the buses were not nearly large enough to accomodate all the students waiting for them. i was dressed formally and thus completely unprepared to stand outside in the freezing cold (-28 C!!!) for two hours which is what i ended up doing. the bus i finally ended up on was full too but i made it on by completely losing it and screaming like a maniac at the bus driver. i don't really scream at people ever. i'm not proud of this and i know it wasn't his fault but i was literally freezing to death and in complete agony and just couldn't function on any other level other than pure survival instinct. all day i've felt like a really lousy person as a result of this. i also ended up missing a really important cfru programming committee meeting as a result of this and i think i might have been kicked off as a result. what a ridiculous fucking mess.

on the plus side, i had a very nice long talk with a mountie and it's left me kind of seriously wondering if maybe i should look for a job in policing... but this might only be a result of the fact that i am sort of obsessed with the wire. i don't really know! i don't know anything.
