See, the first Roger's guy that I had was super handy, totally compatent, was in and out in record time, fixed the stuff we had ordered but the computer thought we hadn't, and he did some extra work tidying the whole house's connections, and put in an order for another guy to dig a hole in the ground and fix some other stuff.
After that, everyone's been totally incompetent, they cut off our stuff when the neighbours moved out, they wouldn't admit that was wrong for the longest time and insisted that we were connected, their repairman knew nothing about anything, and basically their customer service is awful.

I like to think the first repairman we had was like Tuttle from Brazil (movie).

Dear Jens, I agree with Kris and Emaline and Ellizybeth. Texts are less imposing than a phone call, and it's still a nice gesture that you are there if they need anything.

So, the other day I am in a conference for my linguistics class.  In conferences, we basically go over problems with a TA, and all the different students share opinions and intereact and work things out together.  The TA was working through a problem on the board, and was talking about how in the case of a proper noun in English, when drawing a syntactic tree, one will end up with a null determiner represented (won't make sense to people who don't study Linguistics, but it's pretty irrelevant).

So, one of the other people in the conference says in a fairly loud voice "Well, isn't that convenient?"
I pipe in "It doesn't seem very out of place though.  I mean, we've seen similar examples in other situations, so why shouldn't this one work?"
Him:  "I'm sorry, was I talking to you?"
Me:  "You'd made an open remark to the class, I was just giving my thoughts."
Him:  "I wasn't making an open remark.  I didn't want to hear you or anyone else respond."
Me:  "Then you could have just kept it to yourself."

Exchange ends there, but he keeps shooting me glares for the rest of the conference.  At the end of the conference, we have a weekly quiz.  I finish mine, and am on my way out of the room.  Before I can leave, this guy comes up behind me.  He calls "Hey hey hey hey hey, you.  Hold on hold on."  I turn around.

He has a somewhat crazed look to him, he's smiling, and he steps a bit closer.  "You really should be careful how you talk to me."

I'm somewhat shocked.  It came across in a fairly threatening manner, and I just didn't really know how to respond to that.  I mean, it's university, we're supposed to be somewhat mature.  And who makes threats over linguistics.  So I ask "Is that supposed to sound like a threat?"

He's putting on his hat and jacket at this point, still looking a bit off kilter.  "No, no, not threatening.  Just saying, you have to be careful, you have to be careful.  Do I look normal to you?"

Now, I can sort of understand what he's getting at here.  He has boots which go up to his knees, he wears a long coat and a beret.  He has a number of tatoos, including one of the word 'hydrogen' on his neck.  But I can't find myself accepting that as relevent.  "Well, I don't really think normal matters.  I mean, me, you, anyone else in this class, we're all different people with fairly unique tastes and personalities.  All I can do is try to be respectful and civil, regardless of who I'm talking to.  I'm sorry if I upset you in any way, and I'd like to get going now.  I hope you have a nice day."

I start to turn around, but he calls "Wait wait wait, hold it.  I just need you to know, you have to be careful, you have to be careful how you speak."

I'm still kind of shocked that this whole thing is actually happening.  "Alright, I appreciate that, but I really have been trying to be careful, and civil, as much as possible.  Now, I'm going to be leaving."

He glares at me and says "Alright, you can go now." with the tone of a rich man turning away a servant.

"Thank you for dismissing me.  Have a nice day."  It's all I could think of to say.  I turn away and walk out.  As I leave, three different students come up and thank me for talking to him.

I've found this to be the most confusing situation I've been in while at McGill.  I mean, I can understand heated responses to something, but linguistics seems like the class where it would be the most difficult to be personally affronted by something.  I've been really uncertain how to handle the situation.  I mean, I should probably go to the professor and let him know, but it's clear this guy has something going on, and I don't want to make his life any more difficult than it has to be.  But, at the same time, it's pretty clear that he's intimidating other people in the class, and preventing them from participating or enjoying what we do as much as they could.

It's all been on my mind the past couple days, and I'm still not sure how to deal with it.

Blah.

Thankfully, life outside this incedent has been lovely.

Hmmmm, I'd take it to the professor. All the details you provided about this guy's appearance don't seem relevant on their face, but for some reason I keep coming back to thinking of linguistics as the sort of thing a far-right intellectual would study. Purity of language, heavy nostalgia factor, all that.

Or I could be totally full of shit. I probably am.

Still, even if he is just a particularly prickly geek with serious social skill issues, that shit shouldn't fly. If he threatened you on the clock then he's definitely due for a sacking.

Like, I wish I didn't feel the need to say this, but we have school shootings. Maybe the dudes just undergoing an identity crisis or something, but I think the fact that we have school shootings in recent memory makes it somehow more reasonable of an idea to people on the edge. His behaviour was unacceptable, and if he wants to throw around the idea that he's not normal or stable, maybe he ought to be treated as if he's not normal or stable.
Talk to the professor is my advice.

Nobody wants to intervene because they are scared, but all he really needs is someone to get involved.

That, or he was making a really intellectual linguistics joke and it went right over your head.

Mmmm mochi. We went down to Boulder for New Year's and they were having a mochi festival. Lots of strong young japan-descendant men lined up to smack a big ball of rice with a giant wooden mallet, yelling at the top of their lungs all the while. Then we ate it. It was pretty good even when unflavored.

Also man thanks for making a fool of me ally, geez.

Fuck. I ordered a new passport today, and apparently the $23 I spent on the photos weren't even necessary. They use a new system now where they take your photo on this fancy little machine in front of their desk/little window, for free. But their website and posters all over say to bring a photo. They said they could use the photo I'd brought, though, if I wanted to, and I did because it wasn't a horrible photo. But their system was broken, so after crashing so the cute guy had to re-enter all info a bunch of times (the last two times he actually remembered my full name, home address, address here, birthday, personal id number and phone number without asking, so, ehm, a lot of times), he ended up having to use their machine anyways. So, not only did I throw $23 out of the window, I look depressed and like I just got in from a snow storm on my passport.

But, finished my midterms, and after doing two assignments tonight, I can relax, knit, watch movies and practice my juggling all weekend, which will be awesome.

And just plain wrong with from a linguistics standpoint, which accepts progression of language in any manner as natural.

bog sled,

In my Politics of Organized Interest class we're starting up group projects, and I was afraid I'd be stuck with a bum group of numbskulls (given that this is an upper-division course the chances of that happening is slimmer than usual) so I was thinking of joining a group with the other vocal guy in the class (I talk quite a bit) but I was unable / too shy to work it out before class started. Fortunately for me that guy came to me and said "I want to work with you, you seem to know what you're doing". So it worked out.

Plus he's sorta dreamy.

So my mom is looking for a job now. She left me a voice message asking me to email the manager of nursing personnel resources at a certain hospital about the protocol for applying to multiple job openings. I stupidly sent an email asking that question as myself (ie from my email account) and specified that it was on behalf of my mother. Now she is really mad at me??

In hindsight it is painfully obvious that that is not a good idea and doesn't look good for an applicant but arghhh I am bad at adult things. Also bad at understanding my mom. Sometimes she is like "just do what I say!! and don't think about it!" and other times she is like "I know my language skills are poor but don't pretend you don't understand what I mean!!" And like...she had straight-up told me to ask this lady a question, which apparently meant that I was supposed to log into my mom's email account and write a draft and then let her look at it first  :?

I guess I should have called my mom and asked to be sure but in the voice message she even added that the woman usually responds pretty quickly so I thought that implied I should do it ASAP.

I really hope I have not ruined things at this hospital!

Well, it'll probably not be a disaster; and in any case you can't change things by worrying about it now.  The way I see it, each mistake we make is one less for the rest of our life.

Blog thread:

So, on Tuesday, my mother gave me two of my paychecks that had shown up at her house. While going through yesterdays mail this morning, I found another paycheck. So I had a total of three paychecks. I rarely get paid on time, and I've had so much going on lately, so I'm not really sure if I missed three or two paydays. I really have no idea. The dates on all of them are all different. I don't know what to do. :(

Thanks, Paul. Yeah, after thinking about it a bit I decided it wouldn't be best to keep worrying about it.

Unfortunately my mom emailed me saying she thinks she won't apply to that hospital anymore because of what I did. Honestly, that decision doesn't make sense to me, and in the end if that's what she chooses to do, I know it's not my fault, but it still really sucks and I feel pretty bad about that! Also I accidentally told my aunt a little about what was going on because I forgot my mom was keeping her unemployed status a secret !!! I realized my mistake and now she just thinks my mom is looking into getting a position less stressful than the operating room, but still, ugh, self.

This morning, as I walked through the melting snow and the effervescent sunlight of the morning, I crossed a bridge.  This bridge is a popular spot for contemplation because I can look at the lazy river below and wonder where I have gone wrong.  I stand here, pondering the meaning of my insignificant life until I am either late for my appointments or nearly run over by a one-speed-bicyclist or natty old woman in a Honda.

This morning, however, there was a significant variation in this usual scene.  With the advent of early spring, the ice gilding the shifting surface of the river began to fade out and gossamer cracks in the ice turned into rifts between ice floes.  As I looked up the river, I could see an ice floe traveling downstream, a wibble-wobbling down towards me, and as it got closer, I could see two ducks.  Their little orange feet labored to stay on the sheet of ice, and they pecked haphazardly every other second for reasons that remain a mystery to me.

I feasted my eyes upon this sight.  I looked until I could look no longer.  I felt like a voyeur into this magical world of surfing ducks; an interloper.  The feeling that I dd not belong, however, did nothing to sully the surge of wellness that had come over me.  I continued the rest of my comparatively banal day with a feeling of grace.

TL;DR: Surfing ducks.  Fuck yeah.

I've had (part of) a 36 inch pizza before.  It apparently wasn't economical to cover the entire thing with cheese, so they laid it out in a spiral instead.  It also required two of those folding serving trays to support its bulk.

I may have been wrong, a large is probably 16 inches.  Although I've had pizza from places that had different ideas of what 'large' meant.

Guys, he was just implying that I'm a fatty.    Shane, I wish I could still eat whole pizzas.  Now, I can only down about 4 slices at a time.

Got my filling at the dentist, but since I have a terrible habit of chewing my lip and the novocaine was pretty strong, I kinda bit a chunk out of my lip without noticing until I looked in the mirror.  So hot, lemme tell ya.

So today I woke up to an email telling me that I have been accepted on to my first choice Masters course (Early Modern History at Sussex)! I am pretty excited - I was not expecting to hear from them for another month or so, as I only sent my application in last Saturday. Another year avoiding the real world and learning about religious groups that died out centuries ago! Of course, I'm not completely clear on how I'm going to afford this, but that's a thing I'm ignoring for now. There's still a chance that if I get offered a place on a course in London, I will take that just so I can live with my dad for free/cheap. I don't know.

Also, tonight I am going to a party in a flat that is being demolished soon - apparently they have covered the walls in those moulded grips you get on climbing walls, and everyone is supposed to bring a can of paint. This should be a nice diversion from my current library-based life.

Saw some stuff from the (perhaps cancelled, perhaps put on hold) Aliens game I was waiting for for a few years.

I spent time reading reviews of the Darkfall beta.

I want that game fucking NOW.

On the other hand, I've gotten this bad habit of not doing homework because I hang out in Meebo and these forums. I just got back a crappy grade because I hadn't spent enough time reading up on the differences between different kinds of endurance training. And my reaction was "I could not care any less about this. In fact, I had cared more if it was about 8th century art, and 8th century art is on the bottom of the damn interesting scale". I manage to do (really) well in the cool classes that I care about, so fuck you, "theatre and movement".

I have also been pondering on why the mods don't make Discussion and comics forum contributions mutually exclusive.

I am trying my hardest not to have the flu.
My parents brought me a couple of mugs (so I can have hot cocoa) and I am currently eating ramen out of the Yang mug.

I am sitting in my living room, watching my wife, my sister and  my brother-in-law play bullshit. I'm watching because I'm working on finishing a bottle of wine and I'm way too far gone to try and play. We're also listening to the newest Fallout Boy album, which I (and wife) quite like.

Just be glad I'm going back and editing the typos. Also, my wife hates bloggers. I am currently being hated and this will continue until I actually post thing and finish this facsimile of blogging.

Jens-

Due to the aftereffects of spinal surgery to remove a tumor, my girlfriend has been partially paraplegic for a little more than two years. She uses a powerchair mostly and can manage to walk with a walker. It's not fun for her at all and still gets nerve pain every so often. Having to deal with this has definitely brought us incredibly closer (partly because she had to leave school for surgery only two weeks after we started dating).

If anything dogg, be there for her any way you possibly can. Really can't add anything more than that.
