I can't get to sleep, its 1am and I have to get up at 6am for fire training and orienteering and if I don't turn up I will not be offered a job back at my old work no matter how great I am, and why did they think it would be a good idea to give a bunch of bartenders their important training at 8am?

I also have my first day of university after all this tomorrow afternoon and I'm glad all my classes start after 2pm because this conflict between two opposing lifestyles (one where you wake up before noon and try not to take too many drugs, and one where you wake up around 4pm and are given drugs to help you through a work shift) nearly killed me last semester.

Also read the first notes for my class "Philosophy of Time Travel" and started watching every episode of Star Trek the dude references, I estimate it will take me approximately 12 hours to do so.

I just wrote a 3500 word essay in three hours, and it's worth maybe five percent of my degree? I am a fucking NINJA at artificially imposed deadlines.

yeah both her and the baby were okay. We had to go to the ER cause her leg and elbow hurt really bad, and we needed to have the baby's heart monitored to make sure everything was okay. My gf just had some deep bruises on her leg and arm.

The baby is 26 weeks, we are really just lucky that she didnt land directly on her stomach.

But since she has been pregnant she has been in two car accidents (not with her driving) and now a bicycle accident. There are forces working against this baby's life.

I told my GF to induce at 30 weeks so that she would stop getting into accidents, jokingly of course.

I know its not a huge word limit but that is still a pretty pitiful percentage unless the essay topic was "look out the window and write about what you see"

Alternate essay topic for urban dwellers if they are a dude:

"write 3500 words about how much you like your dick"

Snow! It snowed! I made it to my friend's apartment close to campus yesterday afternoon, and am very glad not to be snowed in (I use this term loosely) at my house by myself. Classes are canceled today and all this snow is still on the ground and it is just so wonderful!

It is meant to be the culmination of four years work and there are about eight other essays that count for it as well as maybe ten exams over the course of two years? I think it's a fairly huge whack to be getting for, what, three hours work.

Given that it is the first week of semester have a mental outline already prepared for my 3000 word final essay for a subject, that compares the use of time travel in Back To The Future with that in The Time Travellers Wife, and am only some illegal substances and a few hours away from 40% of the entire subject, no I do not think that is a massive amount for three hours work.

Thank you arts degree, I knew there was an awesome upside to you.

5% of a degree is a serious thing. That is five percent of four years of work.
40% of a course is thing. It is 40% of four months of work (assuming you have semesters like I do) (40%/(3*4)=3.33...% < 5%).
If I interpret the situation correctly then you are talking about almost the same numbers.

That's one course for one semester. How many courses will you do in your whole degree? This essay is five percent of four years work, because my college is ridiculously old-fashioned and doesn't like the concept of semesters or credits or indeed telling you how much things are worth up front.

EDIT: Yup, that's what I am thinking too Slick.

Universities love to obfuscate things so that you can never be quite sure how things are going to pan out, marks wise. It's a fucking pain. But yeah, 5% of a degree for 3,500 words seems reasonable - I think I have to write about 34,000 words of assessed work this year, which accounts for about half my degree, so it's pretty much the same.

Well, I've been in college for ten hours so far and I still have another one to go before I go to work for two hours to do some extra training so that I can do four hours' overtime tomorrow, after a full day at a German conference. Don't try to tell me about a healthy work-life balance; I have no life without work.

Actually it isn't as bad as all that... who am I kidding? This is incredibly boring and I can't even get on half the threads on these forums because we have a stupid arbitrary blocker which picks out key words that apparently appear in just about any thread except, interestingly for a blocker which bans all blog sites, this one. Also I can't get onto Meebo because the computers which are enabled to access Meebo are locked into a room downstairs.

Gah. I am hungry and I can't eat in the library which means in a minute I have to go and get my sandwiches and eat them in reception. Nice balanced diet, this will be my main meal of the day unless I eat a cooked meal at eleven pm when I finally get home.

Meh, I'm just carping. I chose to do this and I'm glad I am doing, I've been pestering for kiosk training for months and the overtime pay will be useful (not to mention the mountain of work I've ploughed through during my enforced solitude in the library). Also less admirably I now have a cute little anecdote that will simultaneously reinforce my Crazy Lady label and give the impression that I am a workaholic. I feel my day's quota of crazy wasn't quite fulfilled during the discussion of my marital plans that sprung up during class, although it was a close call. Please remind me never to discuss anything remotely humorous with anyone ever again.

PS Jace get her pregnant and then she can ship the baby over to me! I'm sure Emilio and I will make great parents, and the kid will have the advantage of frequent foreign travel and the opportunity to grow up multi-lingual! What more can a baby want?

Dear blog thing,

Star Academy is basically what it would look like if you took American Idol, Big Brother, and Dancing With The Stars and filled it with Albanians, with a chick:dude ratio of 3:1. Also, I have to be there from 3pm until 9pm, meaning that I can never hang out with my friends ever.

It's basically taking one thing I like and 30 things that make me a very unhappy person.

blog thread,

I am missing my friends more than I probably should. It is very nice out (record high today of 72 degrees F) and I want to be going on hikes and stuff.

Also, the more time passes, the more I realize that my relatively stable emotional state over the last couple of weeks has been due to my best friend not being around. I don't know, I love her very much but being around her and anticipating her presence tends to bring back the sort of poisonous self-loathing I've been so far from lately. But I feel like I need her support. I think I'm secretly hoping that she never calls me again. I feel terrible about it.

I just want to be clear here: the 3 to 1 chick to dude ratio is the good part, right?

These girls are all very attractive (most of them are on here for the dance part of the show, rendering my male mind quite helpless), very isolated (we all have to be at the studio from 3pm to 9pm, and I'm one of the few contestants who actually lives here in Tirana) and very attention-whorey. I seriously spent maybe 45% of the day yesterday listening to the rules of the show, and 50% was spent avoiding contact from the female contestants. The other 5% was spent actually, like, singing.

Combine the above with the fact that I am very faithful to my girlfriend and you see my dilemma. It's hormones vs. conscience. Conscience is winning pretty soundly, but I kindof feel like Jesus in the desert on day 39.

Basically I do not like this show and I would very much like to go back to Alaska. This show is probably the only real reason I'm still in Albania and it is turning out to suck.

What the fuck blogthread.

So I have my Zune, right? And it's in its handy dandy leather case that protects it from shit. I drop it a few nights ago and it goes black. It does not respond to anything. Charging it overnight does nothing. Plugging into a computer, no response. So I'm like "okay fuck it" and I order a repair box from Microsoft and fall back on my trusty Zen backup.

Fast forward to right now. I had left my Zune lying about plugged into the charger, just in case. I touch it, it lights up, just like new. It only had to charge for about 48 hours straight.

This is the second time this has happened. This Zune is by far the most resilient of all the mp3 players I've owned. And it's an 80 gig, which I looove.

Microsoft is going to get annoyed here soon with the ordering of repairs and then abrupt cancellations.

Brett, you better mention that they effectively erased Jenny from existence in BttF2 and didn't even notice, the motherfuckers.

I don't remember that at all, but I think the focus of the BttF2 part of my essay will focus on whether there was ultimately a good reason for future biff to give past biff the Almanac. I will probably have to rewatch the movie at some point though and if I notice it I will be sure to bring it up.

Also it was my first class today which means a whole new round of "Tell us your name and something interesting about yourself"

I settled on "My name is Brett and I like making cocktails" over "My name is Brett and I like prog-rock and minimal techno", but only just. The lecturer had a beard, I'm sure he's down with some prog rock.

"Tell us your name and something interesting about yourself"

Oh man. I have only had one class so far, so I haven't gotten that question, but I can never think of anything for the second part. I end up saying something like "Hi, my name is Hannah and, uh, I like books?" Which is pretty obvious seeing I am in english-type courses, but then they ask me my favourite book and you know that they want to hear something like 'Pride and Prejudice' or "Lolita' or something smart like that and I end up just mumblin' and mentioning Urban Fantasy and everyone gets a little disappointed.

Maybe I will just say "Hi my name is Hannah and I am a cyborg" That will help me make friends, right? right?

but university is where you will make friends that will stick by you for the rest of your life. And in the first two weeks is when everyone's defences are down and it's easiest to make friends, so I need to hurry up I am halfway through my first week and all I have said is "thankyou" to the person next to me and ohgodIamsoalone.

I need to have an answer that will make everyone want to hang out with me because I am totally awesome. I mean, I had a question last year that was "Who is your favourite fictional character?" Hell, I don't know! I made up some bullshit and said Harry Dresden because I was reading those books at the time. Then everyone looked at me pityingly because my favourite character was a wizard detective. Seriously people, will me saying I am a cyborg want boys (and possibly girls?) want to get into my pants? This is important.

"Hi, my name is Hannah and, uh, I like books?"

That is (basically) exactly what the bookish looking girl next to me said and I thought it was kind of cute but then basically spent the next three hours nearly falling asleep out of tiredness and drunkenness so I wasn't particularly in a state to attempt to tell her that.

Maybe I will just say "Hi my name is Hannah and I am a cyborg" That will help me make friends, right? right?

I don't think I have another class where they will make us do that but uh, I am stealing that one, sorry.

Also it was induction today back at work which was rad and just like old times except there are a fuckload of new people, including new managers with hella ties and our new uniforms are kind of dogshit and now I have to endear myself to about twenty people all over again except now I'm even more of a deranged lunatic from a year and a half in the liquor service industry so basically I am fucking in a great mood because I've got half a load on and I like a challenge.

I didn't go to my Monday night class because I thought I had been kicked out. When my roommate came home, I thought he'd be upset with me (as he is one of my instructors). We talked about how it doesn't matter that I was kicked out, I just need to show up anyways to show that I want to be there. He also told me that I am the only one from our school that everyone thinks can actually run a school.
Out of the nine people who started:
one is "a tortoise, slow, but eventually he'll get there"
one is "a hare, so into it all that he's caught up in himself"
one is going into the military
one is already a doctor and is doing this as an extra form of learning
one is very busy with his other job as a contractor and has some health issues that keep him from training
one dropped out completely with no word of why
one was a flash in the pan who burned out by trying to do it all at once
one is in college full time right now to get an English major (and something else, its a double major) with a chinese literature (or something like that) minor, either she'll give up the college or the Kung Fu, and she is pretty academically inclined.
And one is me, I'm not in school, just Kung Fu, I live with a Head Instructor, and he is a really good friend of mine, we're more like brothers than friends.

I'm the only person who is putting all of his future into being an instructor. As my roommate put it, "all eyes are you [me], [I'm] the only one."
That gave me the biggest confidence boost, I feel really great right now, but at the same time terrible because I miss class. I will stop missing class.

I want to be a bartender after going out last night. Dude just played pool, chatted, and made up some nice drinks.

Also I think I might either go for a Computer Networking degree or do networking and security courses at college.

Sorry guys, I love Back to the Future and all but every time you write "BttF2" I just can't help but auto-read it as "Butt Fuck 2".
Man, the third one was pretty shitty.

And in this kind of film, that can only be a good thing.

networking and security

Ah, the fun you can have!  I just changed our domain password policy and forced everyone from the Professor down to change their password.  (The previous policy wasn't really good enough - certainly not to meet the requirements of the MHRA, the UK equivalent of the FDA, who oversee our clinical trials work.)
