Sad news the double Pulitzer winning John Updike has died today

You're scared of mice and spiders, but oh-so-much greater is your fear that one day the two species will cross-breed to form an all-powerful race of mice-spiders who will immobilize human beings in giant webs in order to steal cheese.

This is truly sad and a major loss for the world of literature. Updike was, until today, the living American writer with arguably the greatest oeuvre. He was certainly a master of his craft in any case.

Fuck.  Fuck.

Fuck.

Fuck.  Fuck.  Fuck.

I go to the New York Times site to look at some reviews of older books, and this news awaits me.  I actually feel kind of devastated.  I just wasted a bunch of time in the library reading some of his older New Yorker articles.  Fuck.

I think I'll reread Rabbit, Run this week, I guess.

Fuck.

The New Yorker is running a series of brief remembrances by a number of authors here.  Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Ford, Jonathan Lethem, Julian Barnes, and others.  Worth reading.

Still feeling pretty bummed about this.  Fuck.
