Classic Video Game Day at the library
« on: 04 Feb 2009, 14:39 »

So with the success of the double elimination retro video game Tournament I have decided to run a video game day where people can just stop in and play video games.

So far I have decided to include PVP Starcraft, Marvel VS Capcom 2, Typing of the Dead, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Bomberman and Dr. Mario at separate stations.  MVC 2 is going to be on a projection screen (it looked AWESOME last time).

Any ideas of what else I should consider including?  Bear in mind that this is not a tournament this time.  Just a video game day where people can come in and play games to have fun.

Scorched Earth.

Only if it's the original though.  I tried the updated version and it was shit.

UT GOTY?

Gran Turismo 2/3?

Any Tekken?

Diablo 2 (People bring save files, although some could be just completely broken)?

Although, really, what do you mean "classic" by? is it pre-2000s or something?

Scorched Earth.

I will have to find this game.

I do have the Original Death Tank and Death Tank 2 for the Saturn which was a big hit during the tournament.

Keep up the suggestions people!  This is a big help!

Really I don't have a specific "era" in mind.  Just anything that people might have played a lot years ago.  Games like Starcraft never really went away.

I don't want to have "current" gen consoles.  I want the original controllers.

Some people don't know how AWESOME the 2nd model controller for the Saturn was for 2D fighting games.

Dude.  I only got two Dreamcasts I am willing to set up for this.  I am going to have 2D games like MVC and SF3 on one and 3D titles like Powerstone 2 and Soul Calibur on the other.

I GOTTA have a Genesis running something everyone can like...

...Ohh.  Maybe Streets of Rage 2!

I dunno I really like SF2 Turbo.

If you can think of a good way to get a rotation going for single-player games, then SNES classics like Donkey Kong Country just scream to be noticed.  But that usually takes some doing.

Oh man, Scorched Earth.  I used to play that on DOS as a kid.  Fuck, man.

This man is doing it oh so right.

Have to agree with X-Com.  Probably Tie-Fighter, as well.  And if you want great old-school RPG...  Find a copy of Planescape: Torment.  Great idea, bud...

Wow.  Some really older dude just came up asking about the video game day.  He looked like he was about 60.

I suppose I shouldn't feel that bad about playing video games now that I am 27...

In any case the last time I held a similar event mostly younger people showed up.  Now that I have promoted this event more who knows what the crowd will be will for this thing.

Or some shooters and fighters. I can't think of any other genre of game that would work actually.

Everything seems set up for Sat.

OK here is the lineup so far.  (in no particular order)

Starcraft
Street Fighter 3
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Dr. Mario
Bomberman (several versions, sadly Saturn version is not included)
Guardian Heros (multi link mode)
Scorched Earth (remake PC edition)
Death Tank 2
Pong
Combat
Ikaruga
Powerstone 1 and 2
Typing of the Dead
Samba de Amigo
House of the Dead 2
Street Fight 2 Turbo
Mario Kart (Both N64 and SNES editions)
Smash Bros (N64 Edition)
Contra
Astro Smash
Snakes

and MORE (I just haven't decided what else to include, so suggest away).

There will be two projection screens setup in the auditorium as well as a couple of PCs to play Starcraft and 4-5 TVs to play various consoles.

I am also gonna provide some water and soda for people.  Last time people were all right with not spilling any.

I think the only other thing I might try to include is a classic 2 player FPS like Quake or Half Life on the PCs.

Any suggestions?

Well it went very well.

The setup was AWESOME.  We had 7 different stations setup with 2 projectors running.

The most popular game was Marvel Vs Capcom 2 running off a Dreamcast hooked up to a VGA box wired to a projector.

I provided water and soda for everyone.

I was shocked that nobody played the Starcraft setup we had running.  I played a game against the page who helped me set up and it was pretty awesome.

Some 11 year old kid played my copy of Streetfighter vs Marvel Superheros and beat the entire single player game.

A 15 year old beat me at Powerstone 2 which was a blow to my ego.

All in all it would have been nice if more people had showed up.  There were a lot of younger kids that showed up.
