A nickel says Buckley goes into conniptions over this. (After all he almost sought legal action against some kid who used his characters in a school project...)

Looks like he emulated other peoples' drawing styles pretty well, though the xkcd stick figure guy is a little too clean. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Needs more Real Life or Dr. McNinja.

Check out the bit at www.goblinscomic.com. Apparently, the LICD guys have been less than polite about their use of other people's characters and will now be facing legal action.

So he got a less than polite reaction to a less than polite request* over something he initially thought a compliment; how petty - and opportunist**.

* if the initial request included the threat of legal action, as implied.

A polite request never has to be friendly. It does seem awfully opportunist, yes, although when the artist of LICD responds like an asshole to a perfectly reasonable request, I imagine I would have done the same. However, now that I read that statement again, I can see your point...

Why would you argue with free publicity? Especially on a site that gets many times more traffic than yours? He should have asked to be given credit, instead of jumping out with "ZOMFG DATS MINE I'M GONNA SUE YOU!!".

And in other news, QC has been getting more traffic than CAD since the 23rd. At least, according to Alexa.

Well, clogging the legal system with frivolous lawsuits is a great American pastime, right up there with baseball and gorging yourself on fast food.

I wouldn't have been surprised if it was real.

Actually, it was filed (at least according to Thunt the Goblin Drawer) in the Canadian legal system. He certainly makes it look real.

O'course, it may all be hooey. 'Cuz, if'n it was me, I'd, like, ask first. Seems stupid and rude not to. Of course, I have no idea whether the LICD guy is stupid and/or rude.

The remark about having court papers served was a giveaway, as that procedure applies when the parties are cooperating without attornies (as in, say, an uncontested divorce).

While the Goblin charges may or may not be a joke (from the current background on that page, I'm guessing it is), Overcompensating still seems to have a bit of a sore spot.

I have always wondered- for all its apparent success, LICD seems to be pretty standoffish in the otherwise close-knit webcomics community.

I went for free publicity scam, didn't really tie in april fool's day... suppose I ought be happy there's more to it than "let's make up a bunch of crap for publicity." but I just worry about how cynical I've become instead.

Sadly, there are too many litigious nut-jobs in the world these days to not take something like this stunt at least a little seriously. And it didn't help that I've twice heard Thunt quibbling for an hour or more with a flamer on his live draw channel, trying to get them to admit they were wr-wr-wrong (ala Fonzie). From that I got the idea he might relish conflict.

And yet there are still banner ads for LICD on the Overcompensating site.

For somebody whose webcomic wasn't even involved, he seems awfully irate. Perhaps he is sore about not being included.

The best way to get attention is... to be different? But LICD isn't really that different from a lot of webcomics out there. It just usually seems to pretend the others don't exist.

Also, the LICD banners on Overcompensating are just Project Wonderful slots, so I'm not sure how much control Jeffrey Rowland has over what they display.

Well, I wouldn't say LICD pretends the others don't exist... Hazel & Jamie from GWS showed up in a supermarket last year, and not too long ago I saw a couple of women who looked a lot like PvP's Jade & Miranda.

Usually I send a "hey you don't mind if I feature so-and-so" E-mail to the strip author, but in the case of real famous folks who get tons of e-mails every day, I go to FAQ pages or message board and look for a statement from the creator about using their characters. Here's a good example.

No sir.
The best way to get attention is to be a jackass.

It also gets you chicks, apparently.

It may also find you in an alley, lying in a pool of your own blood, but whatever.
