So you can now listen to the first track off the album. It's called Ashes in the Snow.

This may be better than Moonlight. I haven't decided yet, but it's close.
If this shit opens the album, then what closes it must be fucking amazing.

SO good! Most of this album (75%) involves the 28 piece orchestra so expect epic intensity throughout. Also pretty much all the songs are about this long. It's coming out in March and I really don't want to wait. Luckily vinyl pre-orders for this and the re-release of "One Step More and You Die" start next month which is cool. I love this band to death so I can't wait to hear this whole thing, not to mention seeing them with the orchestra in May.

This piece is beautiful. I'm not surprised, though - Mono is unerringly fantastic. I hope they never stop making music.

I'm glad they apparently haven't gone in the "heavy metal" direction they were sort of threatening to do last year.  It's cool that there's a post-rock/metal crossover fanbase nowadays, but Mono need to stay pretty.  This song is fantastic.

But.. Mono's only interesting parts are the heavy bits!!? No one makes you eat your vegetables before you get dessert quite the same way Mono do.

New song is ok but not up to Halcyon/Are you There?/Flames beyond/Moonlight/etc.

You sseem to be able to hear tracks 4 & 6 online here: Pure As Snow (Trails of the Winter Storm) & The Battle to Heaven, as well as track 1 already posted.

Edit:  They are live versions; not the album.

I disagree, but, even when they get heavy, it's not heavy like the bands they were touring with last year (High On Fire, Mastodon, etc) which is what I meant.

I guess you didn't get the memo.

From what I understand, at many of the shows people attempted to boo them off the stage, despite the fact that High On Fire had specifically wanted them to open the show (Mastodon played second, then Mono, then High On Fire).

I went to that show when it came around Philly and found my way in halfway through Mono's set.  They blew the roof off the place (predictably).  High on Fire had trouble following them.

They're completely different bands, it's no wonder that happened.

Sometimes I will listen to metal, then post-rock, then early American hardcore, then indie rock, then folk, then electro house, the god-knows-what-else and I will do it all in the same day. I thought most people like more than one type of music? And honestly metal and the brand of post-rock Mono play aren't that far removed.

Assholery aside, I know plenty of people who only listen to one genre. And even if it were a bunch of metalheads who listen to multiple genres, most of the people would be listening to different, uh, 'secondary' genres - meaning that possibly only 5% or 10% of the audience would like both Post Rock and Metal.

I'd love to see both of these bands, but, in general, they appeal to pretty different audiences.

It's rather rare that you get a lot of people who only listen to one genre. If I was at a high on fire gig, I certainly am not there for delicate post rock times. I don't think anyone is (well, they shouldn't be).

Sure, a bit of each song is. However, you'd be super hard pressed to describe most of their cleaner moments as "heavy". And there's heaps of those moments, and they're all rather long. Unless if you're one of these people that describes every clean guitar part that's in a minor key as "heavy", you'd be hard pressed to classify Mono as such, especcially with the fuckin' added on.

Oh, ick. Mastodon and High on Fire? Really? I can't think of any concerts in recent memory that utterly out of sync.

Yeah, no, Mono isn't really "heavy" per se, though their crescendos are some of the best in their genre. Though they're good about writing songs where you don't get the urge to skip to the middle, because the buildup is interesting/relevant enough to make you really want to pay attention.

Sometimes I will listen to metal, then post-rock, then early American hardcore, then indie rock, then folk, then electro house, the god-knows-what-else and I will do it all in the same day. Yeah, but when you're at a show to see metal (especially if you're there to see mainstream metal) you're basically there to turn your brain off and dance. Mono is a very involved band, and I can see a bunch of poser metal assholes shouting a better band off the stage just because "it's not metal enough".

God sometimes I hate my stereotype.

That's not as 'out of sync' as Turisas and Dragonforce.

Ugh, don't even get me started on that one. D:

I went to that show and just left before Dragonforce got on.

So I guess I have heard of a show that was more out of sync than the Mono show. Thanks for reminding me xD

Since this has leaked, here are my preliminary thoughts after two listens during a sleepy car ride:

1) It is very good
2) It might be my least favorite by them though because
a) it sounds almost too bombastic/epic
b) i do not like the tone of Taka's tremolo picking
3) They seem to use the orchestra throughout the album, which I think is a good thing. Plus there are two tracks where the orchestra just plays. Those are pretty good, I think.
4) The second song fucking rocks.

Those are my preliminary thoughts. I may give better thoughts, I may not.

I couldn't wait either, sad to say. Wish I had had the willpower but no dice. The good news is that I'll be hearing it in increasingly better sounding stages: first was through shitty laptop speakers, second on my ipod with stereo headphones, third will be on vinyl on my average turntable set-up with pretty OK speakers (on which it should sound pretty awesome), and finally will be live with the orchestra to boot. It'll be like hearing it for the first time with every new stage!
It's a pretty immense album. Really intense, really epic and still really heavy. I love it!

The vinyl should be rad. Temporary Residence always does a really awesome job with their vinyl releases (great sounding and usually pretty great art direction/packaging as well).

Anyone else order the 4xLP (i think) that includes the One Step More and You Die reissue? I can't wait to see what the packaging is like on that.

Also Burial at Sea is so good sdflkjsdlf I will probably die when they play that in New York.

It's not a 4xLP. It's the 2xLP for the new album and a separate 2xLP for the reprint of 'One Step More and You Die' on one of the pieces and the remix album, 'New York City Soundtracks,' on the other. The two sets aren't physically connected or combined in any way, Temp Res is just selling them as a package deal.

I was kinda torn between pre-ordering the pretty vinyl copy, but have been umming and aahing for weeks now because a) it costs more than $70 with the current exchange rate and b) I don't actually own anything with which to play vinyl so it would've just sat there looking pretty while I listen to some shitty ripped version on my PC.

If it's sold out then I guess that's my mind made up. Oh well, probably wouldn't've bought it anyway.

I think he's referring to the package deal, which is the new album and the "One Step More.../NYC Soundtracks" 2xLP as well, and a copy of the new album on CD. It cost $35 but is now sold out. I think having it shipped to EU or ROW was quite a lot, however.

Hymn to the Immortal Wind is pretty good.

No where near as good as You Are There though. That album is amazing.

Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined is also really good, not as good as You Are There, but better than Hymn to the Immortal Wind.

Just my two cents. Love Mono.
