I just beat Command and Conquer 3, and got tired of Sid Meier's Pirates. I need something at least decent, preferably engaging, possibly RTS or turn based strategy, something I can just play hella.

I need an awesome game, guys. Please, provide me an awesome game.

I think getting tired of Sid Meier's Pirates is a symptom of a pretty serious illness. You should get yourself checked out, man.

On the more serious side, turn-based strategy doesn't get much better (if at all better) than the Civilization series. RTS wise, Warcraft 3 is old but still plenty awesome. I realise that almost all people will have played these games, but you didn't give us much to work with on the "already played" front.

Psh, Rome: Total War? That's a silly recommendation considering Empire: Total War just come out! For my money, the Total War series is among the very best in both turn based and real time strategy (competing for my heart are in the latter are Age of Empires II and Warcraft II, also highly recommended if somehow you missed either).

I hear Empire suffers from bugs, silly AI, and bad pathfinding, though - though these things are likely to be fixed in patches.

If you're into turn-based combat, there's an unparalleled game called "Jagged Alliance 2". Fairly old, but the tactical combat stuff is top-notch, even if the learning curve is a bit steep.

I really liked World In Conflict before my computer died and killed my savegames. It has Alec Baldwin narrating!

Is a good point, though ... 'retro-gaming' can be fun. If I don't know anymore I go and replay Diablo&Hellfire, Dune II, Dune2000. Insane amounts of fun ensue.

If you're going to do retro, I recommend x-com, ufo defense - and possibly even its sequel, terror from the deep - none of the others after that though, they went to shit.

If you can find it, Red Storm Rising is a cool game. It's not easy to get hold of though.

I don't want anything too retro. I was playing the original Red Alert, but seriously it's just terrible looking, and not as fun as I remember.

Also it has to work for mac.

The first 2 Fallouts also featured tactical combat, but are fairly old. Still classic though.

Fallout Tactics is almost exclusively tactical turn-based combat (or really hectic real-time combat) but skimps on the RPG elements. Still, it's a lot newer and is a pretty solid game in its own right.

There should be readily available OSX torrents for all of them.

I'm gonna second Jeans' recommendation of Psychonauts. It's easily one of my top ten games of all time. It's a platformer, but it's so well done, I think it would engage people who don't like platformers. Also, Doublefine deserves all the support it can get.

It's $10 on Steam and there's a demo.

I'm currently playing Age Of Mythology. I like it a lot more than both AoE3 and warcraft 3, it's pretty much one of the best RTS games.

But seriously, you should try something completely new. I always suggest the Avernum and Geneforge series from spiderweb software, because those RPGs rock ass (and they are made for macs). Also, Might and Magic 6-8 was awesome games.

Rise of Nations is seriously awesome. I love it. I generally don't play campaigns in RTS games, just custom battles and my one complaint is that RoN tends to boil down to a nuclear arms race. Basically you jockey back and forth with the enemy/enemies for position as you advance up through the ages. As long as you have your capitol and a couple other cities, you're ok. Then you just pour a lot of tech into getting nukes, put an army outside of an enemies city, drop a nuke, a rush in to mop up. Other tactics work of course but then you get nuked if you slack. I still love the game but that does get a tad tiring eventually.

Empire: Total War is a lot of fun. It feel a LOT like Civ, but I suppose that's both a good and bad thing, and when it gets slightly obnoxious you get to command troops on the ground level and it makes it more fun. It can be buggy, though, and I constantly have to watch the pathing it's doing (YES PLS MOVE THAT SHIP PAST THE PIRATE ISLAND AGAIN). And it has long campaigns, for the actual time period it covers. Although, including China wouldn't have been *that* difficult.

If you want to go with Total War, go with one of the homebrew mods like Europa Barbarorum. More historical accuracy, more rounded out factions (particularly hellenes and Barbarians) etc.

2. Get the AI tech, allowing for instant building of all units
3. Prepare heavy forces along borders
4. Pause game
5. Launch a nuke at every single enemy city simultaneously
6. Unpause game
7. Steamroll those fucks, mopping up any surviving troops and capturing all their cities which are on zero health and can easily be captured
8. Laugh
9. Laugh some more. Louder this time.
