YAY!!! I've always loved Conan so much more than the rest of those guys. He's deserved Leno's spot for a long time and I'm glad he's finally getting it. Also, The White Stripes will be playing. Cool!

Tonight show will be worth watching again with Conan Obrien instead of Jay Leno.
What really upsets me is that Leno is just moving to an earlier slot with a different show name and I'm worried that he is going to cut into Conan's 'Tonight Show' audience who isn't willing to take a chance on that 'jackass with the bad hair from after midnight

The last episode tonight is going to be emotional, I can tell... at least for me.
I really have loved that show for something like 13 years straight now. I will miss the personality unique to Late Night. It will never exist again.

The only thing I hate about this is that Jimmy Fallon gets his show March 1st while we have to wait to see Conan on June 1st.  So Leno followed by Fallon for 3 months.

The only thing I'm remotely curious about with the Fallon show is how the Roots will make the transition to being a house band. For one thing, I read somewhere that NBC so far hasn't paid for publishing rights on any of the band's music, so they'd likely have to perform new stuff. Presumably, new material played on the show would end up being owned by the network as well. I'm really curious as to how the whole thing will end up. That said, I'm sure they'll just play some completely uinteresting jazzy noodling like any other house band in the history of the universe, so I doubt I'll bother to tune in any time soon.

Yeah, I really find the whole thing pretty depressing. This kinda thing is probably what the phrase selling out is intended for, but they've been around for 2 decades now and I don't really begrudge them a cent. Plus, whenever someone utters the words "sell-out", I have the most incredible urge to punch the speaker right in the neck.

Man, Conan. My older siblings have been watching him since the beginning in 1993 so I've grown up being in love with this man.

Jay Leno is a butt, and I think the whole situation with NBC not completely letting him go is hilarious because I just imagine Jay blubbering while the NBC exces are like, "Uh... wait! We'll give you this!" and he is just like sniffling in thanks

but I've had mixed feelings about Conan taking the top spot. He's deserved it for ages, but I've always been worried about him having to switch up his style to try to gather in the old folks. I love him so much because he's just this goofy-ass dork with also a hilariously lacking budget, which is one thing I will miss if they slick things up. Honestly though, I haven't been keeping up in so long so... I'm probably not up to date.

I also am torn on his move to LA. Now he is so close to me! But I hate Los Angeles and Conan's a New York guy to me. I've tried so hard to get tickets and it's always been one of my dreams to go to NYC and see Conan, but oh well.

I cannot believe that. Not being funny > laughing at all your own jokes.

Nathan Rabin over at the AV Club sums it up perfectly.
Quote
I will never forget what Keith Phipps said when I asked him how he felt about the news that Conan O’Brien said would be taking over The Tonight Show. He said it reminded him of the scene in Goodfellas where Joe Pesci thinks he’s becoming a made man only to get assassinated gangland-style. It seemed too good to be true. Hot headed punks like Pesci don’t get to be Made Men and eight-foot-tall hyperactive, super-genius goofballs like Conan aren’t supposed to take over Johnny Carson’s vacated throne.

Keith wasn’t saying Conan wasn’t good enough to take over the most prestigious, high profile position in all of late-night comedy. He was saying that Conan was, if anything, too good, too weird and too brazenly original for The Tonight Show’s mass audience.

Watching Late Night With Conan O’Brien I’ve often had the feeling that Conan was getting away with something. Let the world have Jay Leno. Conan was and is for us; the comedy geeks, insomniacs, potheads, oddballs and night owls. Conan seemed to inhabit the same crazy upside down world as After Hours, a nighttime realm where the rules went out the window and a cosmic and comic anarchy reigned.
I'm going to miss this show a lot. Somehow I don't see the Tonight Show featuring a great many trigger-happy golden retrievers. I started watching this show around the time it found its sea legs, and I know a whole lot of people who did the same. It came around at a time in my generation's life when we were just old enough to stay up till 12:40 in the morning just to watch a TV show. The only show that informed my sense of humor as a person to a greater extent was the Simpsons, a show that benefited in its golden years from Conan's input, and a show that shared his sensibility. Late Night was a barely contained madhouse, and it was as smart as it was willing to just throw shit out there. You couldn't tell the difference between the funny odd and the funny ha-ha.

Conan is pretty great. It's the only late show I regularly watch, although occasionally Letterman becomes worth watching when some rare event rouses him out of his malaise; there's nothing on television quite like a truly fired up Dave, and he goes on these surprisingly vigorous runs where I'd put him right up there with Conan in entertainment value, if not creativity.

It also doesn't hurt that the show first hit the air when I was 11, so it was really hitting its stride by the time I was 13. That's pretty much the prime age to start appreciating things like the Masturbating Bear and the Robot on a Toilet. In retrospect, my parents really probably shouldn't have let me have a tv in my room, even if it didn't have cable.

Conan changing

He promised that he will have the same kind of humor when he changes but you're right, he probably won't.  The Tonight Show and Late Night are two different beasts, especially when you have some of the not-funny-idiotic stuff that Jay Leno does compared to the kind-of-funny-because-it's idiotic stuff that Conan did that made me a regular fan.

OH SHIT YEAH, THE DREAM TEAM IS TOGETHER AGAIN

EDIT: Also, I went to a test show for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon tonight, it was a little rough.  The comedy just wasn't really working, and I have no idea if Jimmy Fallon has the same level of involvement in crafting the voice of his show as Conan does his, but I came away with the distinct feeling that NBC's trying to cast him in the Leno/Kimmel mold moreso than anyone with any sort of strong comic personality (e.g., Conan, Colbert, etc.).  He definitely seemed to do better when he was off-the-cuff than when he was reading what the writers were giving him.  The Roots were fantastic, however.

I think the writers are still giving Conan Leno-esque jokes that fall completely flat, but Conan and Andy save it by being inherently funny.  Like, last night Conan's gesturing ("Bread... sausage... mustache") was so much funnier than the actual writing, and it felt like he had to keep cutting short his riffing to deal with the written material.

I can't wait 'til he's established enough to get the show fully in sync with his personal sense of humor.

HE'S MAD AS HELL AND HE'S NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE

Quote
    People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

    Yours,

    Conan

Somehow I don't see the Tonight Show featuring a great many trigger-happy golden retrievers.

I assumed this too, so it's pretty amazing how much of the crazy shit they're still doing. Like the other night Triumph the insult comic dog asked a woman running a pet spa "How does it feel to be the reason Al Queda hates us?"

Why do people like Leno?
Far as I can tell, there are still lots of old people who fall asleep watching the television, and Leno's thoroughly "classic" schtick is like a sedative. Conan was always for the kids who stayed up late.

I saw Conan walking down the street once, he is a fucking beast, like 6'6". The fact that he was walking with his 3-year-old daughter might have made him look even more impressive.

Word presently is that now Leno is thinking of bolting NBC as well.

This is all so dramatic!

That article you linked links to another article that quotes a hilarious joke from Conan on Friday, I still haven't seen that episode:

"“NBC is going to throw me and Jay into a pit with sharpened sticks. The one who crawls out alive gets to leave NBC.”"

Law & Order: Leno Victims Unit

Letterman offers cogent analysis. It's actually a pretty great summary of the whole debacle.

Craiggers was also scathingly on-point here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9INUbrwWdBA

And Jimmy Kimmel did easily the funniest thing he's ever done: http://www.avclub.com/articles/jimmy-kimmel-auditions-for-the-part-of-jay-leno-in,37027/
