Possibly Mr. Brownstone by Guns N' Roses.  If only Axl had made that his vocal style instead of what it is today.  Catchy riff too.

Or The Wizard by Black Sabbath.  Metal + harmonica = pure awesome.

Goodbye Sky Harbor by Jimmy Eat World is easily my favorite song.  It's a 16 minute post rock masterpiece written before they got famous.  They change it a lot live because it is so long and they can't do the 8 part vocal harmony live.  (Well you could probably loop it, but they don't)  It is radically different than anything they've done before or since.  Every on of the lyrics is from the John Irving book A Prayer for Owen Meany, which most people remember for being adapted into the less well done movie Simon Birch.

I hold a belief that if you can name a favourite artist, then you need to listen to more people.

I hold the further belief that, if you can pick one song from an artist to call your favourite, then you need to listen to more of they're stuff (or 99% of their stuff sucks).

Point out any band I listen to, and I could not tell you my one favourite song by them, unless I only have one album or a few songs by them. If you have 50 songs by someone, picking out one favourite, just like that, probably isn't so easy. I know I couldn't do it. I'd hem and haw and narrow it down to three and couldn't choose from there.

You're making the assumption that just because I have a favourite Nick Cave song that means I haven't listen to all 15-odd albums of his I had, inside and out? It is possible to appreciate that great an amount of music and still pick out a favourite, you know. Besides, my favourite has changed a few times. It used to be 'Loverman' and then 'There She Goes, My Beautiful World.'

"too close to see" by strung out.  a good six years after i first heard it, it's still one of my favourite songs, and the album it's off ("twisted by design") is still in high rotation.  the reason i picked it out of my many favourites as the absolute favourite is the fact that a few simple lines of lyrics have continually helped me through shit times, so much so that i'm planning to get them tattooed soon:

"sometimes you get too close to see a different side of what life can be...
...and if you stare too long it all becomes a blur,
and it's easy to forget just who we are;
don't stare too hard, take a look around"

Saeglopur by Sigur Ros or The Birth and Death of the Day by Explosions in the Sky.

I don't know exactly why but those songs just move the shit out of me. I mean like deep-seated soul-stirring emotionfucking. Yeah yeah they may be "ROMG TOO EPIC ON PURPOSE" but I really don't care. I lose my shit when I hear these songs.

Hmm...this is tough. Some one's I've thought (but still am unsure about) include:
Tarentel - For Carl Sagan
Sigur Ros - Heysatan or Untitled 8
Eluvium - New Animals From the Air (although I realllly like a bunch of others so I'm not sure on this...)
The Drift - Gardening Not Architecture (or Know Certain Futures (both parts) or...)

Ah, fuck this. It's too hard. Most of these will probably be different tomorrow anyway.
