Touch and Go records to significantly downsize
« on: 18 Feb 2009, 10:01 »

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Seriously, this news is pretty terrible. A fair amount of my favorite albums were released on Touch and Go/Quarterstick.

Seriously guys, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Edit: Apparently they're not actually closing their doors but cite the shitty economy as the impetus to decide to drastically cut back their business. So the news isn't apocalyptic bad, but it's still pretty crappy.

God damn.

I am sincerely hoping that these labels, and the others, manage to find distribution deals with some other organization, like Southern or the Alternative Distribution Alliance.  These labels, especially the ones you listed, have released some of my absolute favourite records, and host bands I adore.  This is fucking shitty.

Pretty sure that KRS and Merge are the two labels that will be hurt least by this. They have some of the highest profile names in independent music.

The foundations of punk rock are strong
psssst it's the fundamentals.

Anyway, isn't it the case that everybody's been calling for the death of the music label business for years now? Are we no longer dreaming of a world in which we don't need these companies?

DAMN, in addition to the old guard, we are also gonna loose a lot of new guys as well.

Yes, I do realise that the above sentence is largely tautological.

Not these companies. Everyone's been calling for the death of the major label system but these are companies that put out good records and distributed them. They allowed you and me easy access to our favourite music.

I've been told Merge has been mostly through ADA for a while and T&G itself was using ADA so this is kind of a natural progression but it's still big.

Also they're going to be putting out new music again, people. Just not right now.

Don't forget this label probably ripped off all your favourite bands aswell as putting out their records.

Where are you getting that from, eddie?  Reading accounts from the members of bands who have been on T&G, I've heard nothing negative.  It's sounded quite fair, and quite well run.

The only negative experience I've heard of with Touch and Go has been the one with the Butthole Surfers.  And frankly, from what I've heard I'll have to side with T&G there.
