I need something heavy
« on: 01 Mar 2009, 11:42 »

I'm in the mood for something insanely heavy. I turned on Ozzy Osbourne and it felt too soft for me. I've got Metallica on right now but it's just not quite right. Ministry is almost there.

Any suggestions? I'm on dial up so it takes a LONG time to download albums from m!f but I'm still willing to (Mr. Beast has taken about 5 hours so far and is almost done). I've heard about Sunn O))) and am considering looking into them, but not really sure.

Sunn O))) are a good choice if you want obnoxiously heavy and slow. I'm going to recommend you anything Earth put out in the 1990s, especially Pentastar: In The Style of Demons.

Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Bison b.c. - Quiet Earth
Torche - Meanderthal
Jesu - Silver EP
The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls with Sand
Sunn O)))/Boris - Altar
Pelican - Australasia or the Pelican EP
Baroness - First EP

These are probably my favorite "heavy" albums, in a varied sense of the term. Do you mean heavy in terms of bass, like stoner rock, or some other conception of the word?

I don't entirely know exactly what I want. I know it's something heavy but nothing I can quite put a finger on.

You guys are awesome, you know that? I'm like, "I want (general)" and yer all like, "THEN YOU WANT (SPECIFIC)"

I'm keeping these all in mind.

maybe I should have described them somewhat. the first two are classic stoner rock, torche is... weird. it's fast, but very heavy. Bison is in the vein of mastodon and pelican but a little less avant-garde and a little more retro, I guess? Jesu is kind of shoegazey and pretty in the context of that list, but it has some amazing tones and textures if you have decent headphones. The angelic process sounds like... stars being born. it sounds like the universe being stretched to the breaking point. the sunn/boris collaboration is droneish, much slower paced than anything else on that list. lots of cool drumming on that album. Pelican... I think of pelican as the earth screaming as it wakes up after the winter, which interestingly enough, one of the album titles actually implies. It's slow, downtuned post-something. that baroness EP is short and sweet- 15 minutes, 3 songs. Awesome riffage. probably the most head-banging of anything I listed.

hope that helps.

and if you like some chime and prog with your heavy.

For all-out heaviness, I would recommend Sleep.

Man you guys are such boring hipsters. There's more to being heavy as fuck than playing really slowly and turning your amps up. You also have to be awesome, and you must be able to headbang. This is essential. Here are some starting points, limited by youtube and my tiredness.

Anaal Nathrakh - Do Not Speak
Behemoth - Decade of Therion
The Berzerker - No One Wins
Bloodbath - Outnumbering the Day
The Count Nosferatu Kommando - Jim Beamed Ahnenherbe TV
Grave - Soulless
Impaled Nazarene - Armageddon Death Squad
Nattefrost - Sluts of Hell

Proubly not what you're looking for, but when I want heavy stuff I usally like it thrash, angry and something I can mosh to.

With something like this I must plug A Sin For A Prayer. I lived beside the drummer for a while, and as far as I know they are still unsigned, but their recordings sound good.

For Power/nerdy Metal, I put Blind Guardian at the top, they are like Iron Maiden meets Queen with more tolkien references then you can shake a stick at. Their album "Nightfall in Middle Earth" is a retelling of The Silmarillion.
http://www.myspace.com/blindguardian

Other Random bands that I can think of:
HORSE the band for "nintendo-core". Catchy? yes, Hilarious? Yes, Oh so Good? Hell Yea: http://www.myspace.com/horsetheband

All That Remains has nothing really special about them, but they are one of my favrate death/thrash bands. Maybe thats why: http://www.myspace.com/allthatremains

I don't listen to much metal so outside of saying bands I'm sure you allready have heard of (Pantara, Megadeth, System of a Down) thats all I got.

Given where you are with "heavy" suggestions (Metallica and Ministry aren't exactly crushing by non-80's standards) I'm gonna go with Russian Circles.  Try 'em; you'll thank me-

I also highly recommend looking these dudes up on youtube.  They have great live videos.

They had to change their name to Bison B.C. but yeah, these guys are really great, but comparisons to Pelican aren't really accurate cause they aren't interested in that slow build, and Mastodon kind of sound like a band who does cocaine and can't focus properly. Bison B.C., on the other hand, are basically all about getting drunk and thrashing the fuck out.

Isis? Maybe Baroness' Red Album?

And Agalloch's Ashes Against the Grain, of course. Really depends on how you define heavy as to what you want.
