'Frisco bands by the decade.
« on: 01 Mar 2009, 19:17 »

I'm sure I'm not the only one on here that loves the classic San Francisco sound. There's something about the way the fog rolls in that transmutes itself into beautiful tones. The politics of the city help a bit too. What are your favorite 'Frisco bands of the past couple decades?

1960s:

Jefferson Airplane. Not only did they have some of the most interesting and listenable freakouts [A small package will come to you Shortly], the Airplane brought the pain live [listen to 'Blessed It's Pointed Little Head'], had memorable tunes, and cemented the tones that would become a staple of the city. A far better band than Frumious, Moby Grape, Quicksilver, and, dare I say, the Dead.

1970s

Steve Miller Band. Frumious Bandersnatch's recorded material stinks, but all members of that band are forgiven through "Fly Like an Eagle".

1980s

The Dead Kennedys.

1990s

Brian Jonestown Massacre.

2000s:

Wooden Shjips or Vetiver. Maybe I made this thread to plug Vetiver's sublimely Blind-Mellonish "Tight Knit". Wooden Shjips aren't as engaging, but each release is solidly built around the very essence of the Bay Area.

A. Frisco?

Fucking FRISCO? PEOPLE ACTUALLY STILL CALL IT THAT?

 :-D

B. To answer your actual query, Jawbreaker is probably my favorite band out of SF from the 1990s, while these days Maus Haus and The Lovely Public are my favorite bands out of the city right now. Silian Rail is also pretty awesome.

Of course, expanding the range of this scene to involve most of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley would also draw in bands like Ugly Winner, Worker Bee, Guitar vs. Gravity... tl;dr bay area is pretty awesome. Sorry to hijack the thread.

San Fransisco? I mean, Portraits of Past, Funeral Diner, and ...Who Calls So Loud are pretty good.

You're obviously not a member of the Anti-Deerhoof Society, or else you'd know that Shane is the founder and patron saint of our organization.

Guys, speaking of Bay Area bands, I still have a soft spot for Operation Ivy.
