Hmp. I like characters enough that I was sad to see Meena get written out of the story in a single panel like that.

Then again, I wasn't exactly rooting for Mr. Sideburns to come back into the story, so Meena would have been out either way.

Unless it's all extended fantasy, then WTF.

In any event, it's nice to see Jeph stretch himself artistically, even if this particular strip didn't do it for me. Que sera, sera.

This. I love the comic, and I've said before that Jeph should do the comic for himself, but he has a nasty habit of *seemingly* getting bored with characters and hastily writing them out of the strip.

I mean, look at Natasha. She went from being  regular cast member embarassed by her rich parents to being "LOL UBERBITCH GONE NOW" with like two strips of set-up.

It had to have really happened. We've had a number of comics in the past that have hinted at the fact that QC takes place in an action-movie-superhero-comic world.

The comic has taken an unexpected turn. This builds on my crazy theory from ages ago, that this is a superhero comic with the action happening elsewhere.

"Who sent you?!" "The US Department...of kicking your ass."

I seriously doubt I'll read a more awesome line this week.

Also, from the front page:
QC Discussion: Will turn Jeph into a mass-murderer someday. You'll see. You'll all see.

Like 950 comics ago, I would have been for that.

Well, not exactly. But back when they all used to hang out, Steve and Faye had some good snark going. "Smarmasaurus", "pompadorasurus." Whatever the hell Faye used to call him...

Man, in my drinking days I never got that wasted. And I tried--believe me, I really, really tried.

US Dept. of Kicking Your Ass, indeed. Only way this strip could have been better was if Steve had been teamed up with the Vespavenger.

I was thinking about the supporting characters who will probably come around again
  • Veronica Vance
  • The Bianchis senior.
  • Jimbo
  • Agent Owsly (Whatever his name is. I think he's Steve's recruiter)

And the supporting characters who have made a  (seemingly) permanent exit.
  • Sara (unless she's Pizza Girl) (Who tried to be Marten's girlfriend)
  • Ellen (Steve's girlfriend)
  • Angus, aka Argument Guy (Faye's wannabee boyfriend).
  • Benji (Raven's Hoboyfriend)
  • The Boybobot (Hannelore's last, best chance for sanitary love)
  • Meena (Steve's girlfriend)
  • Dave (Steve's girlfriend's boyfriend roommate fiancé/serial killer)
  • Wil (Penelope's boyfriend. Okay, so maybe he's not gone. Maybe)
  • Marten's boss (who had a boyfriend. Okay, it's a stretch, but work with me, people)

Whoa. I see a pattern!

It's trolling to point out that this strip is a intended to

a) make fun of the "where's Steve"ers, and
b) just like last time a) happened, have some fun?

Enjoy seeing Steve, because we'll next see him in 300 strips after he's Skied Everest, become a cosmonaut, or something, anything, that keeps him out of the neighborhood.

Steve and xkcd's Black Hat Guy must team up for the most epic comic strip in the history of the world.

I'm really hoping this is Steve's official return, I don't think his character ever got fleshed out as much as it could have been.

I will assume that Steve's awesome spy days are in fact the real deal by virtue of QC world being a parellel universe or something.

And as much as I'm "WOO STEVE"ing as much as anyone else I'm trying to not get my hopes up that this is his official return. I always liked Steve (he was the second human character we met, after all) and would hate to assume he's back for good only to be disappointed when he disappears again.

I laughed a lot at this strip and I think it's one of the best out of all of them. It kinda sucks that there was so much buildup with Steve and Meena and the explanatin of her and Dave's backstory for them to be written off in a single, tiny panel, but that's my only problem with the strip. Everything else is awesome.

What's awesome-est to me is that there's a small possibility this won't be the only time this comes up. I mean, the strip is funny as a gag on where Steve has been all this time, but a while back I thought that Steve had been recruited into a secret agency like that and it was involved in this massive conspiracy in the QC world, an integral part of which is the death of Faye's dad.

.......... so yeah. :p

But if not, it was still awesome.
