Saint's Row 2
« on: 10 Dec 2008, 20:47 »

So, uh.

On the weekend one of my mates told me Saint's Row was a fun, mindless romp.  I saw it for $24 in a bargain bin (that is a pretty good price in AUS) so I picked it up.  The guy behind the counter quite obviously didn't want to be there that day, and he obviously made some kind of delicious mistake because I wound up getting Saint's Row 2 instead.

I played it for a bit last night and Jesus Christ it is pretty immediately a riot.  I started out playing it as if it were GTA IV, but by the end of the tutorial I got the picture that while it may be a GTA clone in look and feel it is very very dissimilar in tone.  You wind up running a gauntlet of Police after breaking out of prison, then you wind up on some kind of dock.  I was mucking around brutally eviscerating people and expecting to have the cops come after me fairly quickly, but it seems that taking out the population of a small area doesn't warrant a mention and other people around you will generally just go about their business.  It makes for a less realistic but extremely fun experience.

Here's a few of my favourite scenarios so far:

While breaking out of jail I picked up a shotgun.  I was in the middle of firing at some cops when my break-out buddy ran in front of me and I accidentally headshotted him, gibs flying all over the place.  A message comes up on the screen "you have 30 seconds to revive him."  Revive him from what?  I blew his fucking head off.  (I did successfully revive him, btw)

I walked off the boat and saw a bunch of pimp-dressed gangsters standing about.  I didn't want to annoy them because I figured they'd mess me up, but at some point I aggro'd one of them and maybe 15-20 of them ran after me.  I ran onto a nearby ship and found a choke-point and eventually shot them all.  After things quieted down I walked off the boat and saw a handful of them floating in the water for some reason.  Obviously a bug, but a pretty humorous one.

After this I (with some difficulty) earned the ire of the cops.  I kept killing them until more and more arrived and I couldn't take the heat anymore.  I ran into a storehouse and stood at a doorway, attempting to use it as a choke point.  What I didn't expect was for he cops to drive into the storehouse, run me over, then blast me with shotguns.

One last one, I was driving around and saw a group of gangbangers huddled around some kind of drum.  I drove at them as fast as I could, smashing through them only to find out that the barrel was some kind of explosive, which wrecked my car yet somehow left me entirely unscathed.

Realism?  Pffff, too busy having fun.  Anyone else playing/played this?  If so, what do you think?

There was this artwork from the EB Games magazine that looked like the dude had golden sparkly leeches on his teeth.

That put me off the game before I could play it seriously =P

It is good mindless fun.

I was toying with the idea of picking this up today, and having discovered that it has Deerhunter, Okkervil River, "North American Scum", and The Twilight Sad on the radio stations sold me.  Though it's pretty depressing that there's an "emo" station.

I rented it for a few weeks, and loved it. It's absolutely mindless fun, which is fantastic.

And if you played too hard it'd flop out and dangle around by the wire and that is just super ugly

The radio station "Generation X" has My Chemical Romance and Panic At the Disco and Paramore and other such shit.  And why, other than a minimal comic value, is there an "easy listening" station?

Aside from that, I played it for around 6 hours yesterday.  It's almost ridiculously fun, the physics and driving engines are complete jokes (every car handles PERFECTLY).  At one point I jumped into some water so I could swim to the other side of a ravine type thing, and as soon as I hit the water my character FLEW about fifty feet in the air and slowly landed quite some distance away without taking any damage.  Still trying to figure out how to replicate that.

The story and voice acting so far aren't nearly as bad as I thought they could be.  All the side activities are great.  With some more polish, it could have been better than GTA4 in every way.  As it stands, it's better in a few crucial ways and I hope this spurs Rockstar to make the next GTA game just as jam-packed with customization.  It seems like a little thing, but picking your character's gender and voice/attitude and then having that used in the cutscenes is really cool.

Worth a rental but at the rate I play games (I still haven't finished GTA4) I'd say buy it.

Generation X is voiced by a white rasta. I dub this the quintessential "modern mainstream" radio station.

Easy listening radio stations are the best in these urban sandbox games! The Jazz station is what I always listen to in GTA4. Plus there's something sublime about causing mass havoc while classical music plays in the background.

Ah, the days of causing havoc in the original using petrol tankers and grenade launchers, with Wagner playing on the in-game 'MP3 Player'.

Cliché, but oh so satisfying.

Need to get the new one...
