Good bad movies
« on: 06 Mar 2009, 16:32 »

What movies have you seen that are so awful, cliché and generally bad that they have actually been enjoyable?

I'll start with the obvious Snakes On A Plane. Although it was written to be a good bad movie it has to go in here just for being so.

Now your turn.

Santa's Slay was an amagingly enjoyable Bad movie.

Bill goldberg playing a viking Santa with a partial Longboat for a sled and a Human Eating Oxen as his steed. You also get to see Fran Drescher get killed in the first 5 minutes fothe movie.

Lloyd Kaufman has made his fair share of both good bad movies and bad bad movies but I greatly enjoy Poultrygeist, Terror Former, and Tromeo and Juliet. Do NOT, however, for any reason watch Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD. The quality of that movie ends with the title.

I'm pretty sure I don't like "So bad they're good!" movies. For example, I'm glad I have Top Gun and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in my life, since they're so thoroughly ridiculous, but I doubt I'd actually watch either of them again. The relationship I have with them is more like the relationship I have with Rush; there is no hard feelings because I've gotten to make fun of them so much over the years, to the point where they've definitely been a net benefit to my life. That doesn't mean I'd ever sit down and listen to an album or purchase either film.

I don't like Paul Verhoeven films. I get what he does, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I sort of enjoy the bits with Neil Patrick Harris and the satirical propaganda, but if those are the strongest scenes in your two hour movie, I would say you have a problem.

All Starship Troopers movies are amazing.

As far as actual bad good "so bad it's good" movies go,

* Basket Case
* Crank (The execution is flawless, but the story is so bad it's good. Read the plot synopsis for the sequel on Wikipedia if you dare.)
* Belly (Gangster movie with not one but two rappers in the lead. Directed by a dude famous for his music videos.)

Pfft. Amateurs.

Obvious.

Includes a scene where a man is attacked by a talking lump of shit. Also it's about a vampire motorcycle terrorising Birmingham. And it stars Neil Morrisey and fucking C3P0.

Peter Jackson is a gawky alien hunter who gets his brains dashed out, but manages to cram them back into his skull and embark upon one of the greatest chainsaw rampages in cinematic history. Bastards!

"MURDER ISN'T FUNNY!" *Begins eating corpse*

Possibly the best poster in history.

This is what happens when two extremely stoned looking metalheads somehow wangle funding to make a film. Nihilistic drug dealers become vampire angels and someone tears out a nuns vagina with their fucking teeth.

A bearded serial killer summons Dani filth to tear open peoples skulls, implant demon foetuses into goth chicks and eat cats, for no easily discernable reason.

Sometimes a budget can be a help, not a hindrance. Brian fucking Blessed.

I can't remember if this is the one where he surfs to Japan. That's far and away the best one.

At one point, Riki punches the top of a mans head clean off. This is after he has been tortured, buried alive for a month then manacled in a prison cell with ten centimetre thick chains. So good it should be illegal.

The lip-synching anus matches or excels anything in Hitchcocks ouevre.

Do the maths.

The scary thing to consider is that this film came out four or five years before alien.

Any film that opens with a vampire smoking an enormous cigar driving a long in a big red car and listening to Revenant Horton Heat, and manages to end with the Crips being turned into vampires by gangbanging a female vampire and then fighting Dracula's vampire mafia in an S&M club, is a good film by me.

"I'm hear to find Duran Duran!"

Best evil midget ever

This tale of cannabalistic children plaguing a backwoods community is notable mainly for the unbelievably explicit slaughter of the children at the end by their own parents. One kid gets stuck to a wall with a pitchfork through his neck for fucks sake.

Not the same at all.  Plus, Ichi the Killer was never 'bad', just weird.  Compared to Riki-Oh, Ichi had a HUGE budget.  Or at least much better production values.

Good bad movies are:

Things Peter Jackson did before LOTR

A sizeable chunk of zombie movies, including, but not limited to:
Hide and Creep
Dead and Breakfast
Undead (if only because of Marion's character)
Undead or Alive (starring Chris fucking Kattan)
Hellsground (the first Pakistani movie to feature excessive gore, and was essentially a ripoff of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and any zombie movie you care to name)

Fuck me, I've seen too many to remember.  Likewise, there are lots of terrible ones here.

Game of Death II (A Bruce Lee movie without Bruce Lee, probably the best of many such films)
Delta Force 2 (Chuck Norris in his heyday)

Aw jesus why is my memory failing me now.  I spent more or less a year watching movies like this.

Gold Raiders

Guys...see this movie! It's only on VHS but god damn is it awesomely bad. It's set in Thailand but with a lot of Americans on the cast. The Americans speak English. The Thai actors are clearly speaking Thai and are dubbed in English. In other words...the actors didn't know what they were saying to each other! Yes! This involves a plane being shot down full of gold over the jungle. A US/Thai special forces team tries to beat an evil Thai general to the gold. People get beaten up for no reason. Giant fish are hunted. Massive, laser shooting vampire bats guard a cave that must be crossed. The acting? Hilarious! The characters? Preposterous! Virtually every scene in the move? Absurd and nonsensical! It's probably my all time favorite 'so bad it's good' movie. Plus they sell it on amazon for really cheap. It's worth it!

Don't Pink Flamingoes, Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles all have pretty sizable cult followings among both fans of schlock and some critics?

And I've never heard a bad thing about Heavenly Creatures (which, like Feebles and Bad Taste, is pre-LOTR Peter Jackson).

Yeah, but that doesn't mean they can't still be good bad movies (a lot of cult films are, but it's not a prereq).

And Heavenly Creatures is the most recent entry in the AV Club's "new cult canon", so yeah, It's generally well regarded.
