The thing I'll never understand about the Last Dragon is all the screen time the slimey white business man gets. I mean, it's not like the movie has a plot even with that guy in it. Hell, it didn't even really need one. It's current cult status within hip-hop culture has proven soundly that young kids in the '80s were perfectly happy to watch a dude called Bruce Leeroy face off against a guy called Sho'nuff, the Shogun of Harlem. It's like they knew exactly who their audience was but flinched at the last second.

Quote from review: "THE GATES OF HELL tells the story of Dunwich, Massachusetts, a small town where a priest commits suicide in the local cemetery. This event opens the gates of hell, allowing the dead to return and walk the earth . . . unless a reporter, a psychic, and a psychologist can close them before the impending All Saint's Day holiday. In the meantime, lots of weird things start happening, all usually accompanied by an appearance of the dead priest, who's generally hanging from his noose like some kind of satanic piņata."

This movie actually made me want to throw up when I was like 13-14.  Literally, I had to hold it down.

It wasn't a great movie, but it was bad/good in so many ways.  :D

A friend and I once watched Starship Troopers 3 and Wargames 2 back to back, and ST3 was the superior movie. They even brought Rico back!

They made THIRD!?

My brain is too fried from learning that to even make a good recommendation.

It was in fact your descriptions of Feast, Jens, and the subsequent conversations that led to this thread though i still haven't seen Feast yet (I will rectify this later).

Starship Troopers.

Casper Van Dien, Jake Busey AND Neil Patrick Harris!!!
Fuck you that was an awesome movie.

Thirded.

Fourthed. That movie works on so many levels.

I fifth'd this. It was friggin awesome, nothing else. ARE YOU DOING YOUR PART? <____<

From what I heard, they dropped the kitsch and the satire thing in Starship Troopers 2 and, which is kinda disappointing. As interesting as the novel was, there was no way you'd be able to try to make a film adhere more canonically to it without making it extremely dull.

Seriously? They wear powered armor, jump for miles, throw handfuls of miniature incendiary grenades, and have shoulder-mounted nukes. How is it that addition of those would not make the movie awesome?

Iron Man can appromiximate those qualities yet the parts of the movie that concentrated just on his capabilities were arguably the boring parts.

On the one hand, I trust Spike Jonze and I don't trust trailers . . .

. . . But on the other hand, judging solely from that trailer it looks like they got the Max's costume perfectly right and everything else unutterably, horribly wrong. Man I hope not. But if this turns out to be (as the trailer is strongly trying to convince us it is) another American "Everybody learns to love everybody else" film then I think I'm gonna puke.

I think the problem is that quite a few of those movies that I saw were good, but weren't self-aware or campy in any way, so I don't consider them 'good bad'.  They were just good movie with really low budgets.

Last Rites of the Dead, for one.  It was basically zombie American History X, and it was pretty cool.

wrong.

Dead Alive is GREAT GREAT. all caps, totally necessary.

one of my friends recently found some really shitty old VHS's at a thrift store and they are so terrible that they are good. i tried to Google them to find the covers but they are so shitty that i don't think anyone has ever even seen them. they are called "Dance or Die" and "The Newlydeads"\

edit: i found the cover for The Newlydeads!

One of my all time favorites, filmed in my neck of the woods.

Jackson also filmed The Frighteners around here as well. Another good film. Its just went for too damn long under the radar, especially for having a few big stars in it.

ah yeah i meant moreso in the sense that it's kind of "hey, i make some really cheesy and disgusting horror films but i think now what i really want to do is spend the next few years or so on an incredibly expensive film adaptation of one of the most famous fantasy stories ever written." i did not like the lord of the rings films either but i do find it amusing that they are somehow the same person.

I can kinda connect the two because the way Jackson uses slo-mo is pretty much the same way a B-horror movie director would use it.  Jackson's got an eye for scenery, though.

I like all of Jackson's old work. Bad Taste was funny, BrainDead was an even better follow up. Meet the Feebles was decent. Frightners was cool. Loved Heavenly Creatures. Of them, I'd consider Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles "Bad Movies" just for technical flaws, but they're still extemely fun to watch.

Lacklustre mise en Scene?

That is a joke, yes? Or maybe you are using some fancy film school definition of mise en scene that does not make sense.

According to Wikipedia, there isn't really a set meaning for mise en scene.  So I have no idea what KvP is talking about.
