Hangovers!
« on: 10 Mar 2009, 21:16 »

Because people seem so eager to clog up the photo thread with their remedies!

I went out with ViolentDove and his friends last weekend and ended up getting completely trashed without realising. It wasn't till I had to run to the bathroom that I realised how very silly I'd been.
I spent all night and most of the next day alternately running to the bathroom and laying on the couch with a bucket beside me. Mint tea did not work at all (I thought it would be a great idea). It was not until I was walking home and gave into my terrible craving for a chocolate paddlepop (popsicle? icecream? thingum?) that I started to feel better.

What about you guys?

I usually just drink a lot of water before I go to bed, but I've heard that vitamin C also works? I would recommend taking pills, though, and not chugging orange juice, which might make you throw up more. Sleep also helps.

gatorade helps me out a lot. just like you get dehydrated when you exercise, you also get dehydrated when you drink and subsequently pee/vomit a lot... though hopefully not the two simultaneously.

greasy foods work for me too but on the rare occasion i do end up with a hangover, they are usually so severe that they render me completely incapable of cooking or leaving the house or doing anything useful really so i try to keep easy shitty food like frozen pizza or hamburgers in the freezer for just such occasions.

There's not really much you can do for the violently throwing-up species of hangover except wait it out and get some water down, I find.

Also holy shit I just read the wikipedia article on hangovers and now I want to quit drinking for a bit.

Didn't Gatorade recently restructure their lineup to cash in on the fact that it's good on hangovers?

The best thing is when you are really really drunk, that you just stay up as long as you possibly can, drinking a lot of water, then go to bed, sleep for a few hours, wake up, take some paracetamol, sleep for another 5 hours, wake up, eat. That minimizes hangovers, at least in my experience. The thing is to really stay up untill your hangover is already starting. That way you'll sleep thruogh it and the next day, while starting it late, will be quite tolerable, if not completely hangover-free.

really? dang i really do not want to provide them with free advertising, that kind of sucks.
alternative - drink some water with salt and sugar mixed in and it should do the trick.

Ok, here is what you do. All hangovers are preventable, but once they occur there is not a lot you can do. Lets start with what happens when you get a hangover and work backwards to prevention and causes.

When you get a hangover the best thing is coke. Sorry if you don't like coke, but it really is. It has caffeine which eases your body out of the lethargy of a hangover, it settles your stomach, and is easy as hell to throw up. Water is also obviously key. The two types of hangover are from dehydration and vitamin deficiency. Dehydration causes headaches and deficiency causes you to want to puke. Painkillers are virtually useless if you have both types of hangover because your body will almost certainly reject them, and if you haven't eaten since that kebab you chowed down on at 3 am, they will usually have an adverse affect. Don't bother unless you just have a bit of a headache and need to function. Drink some coke, then drink some more water. If you have to puke, puke and then drink more water. Thats it. Thats all you can really do. Greasy food will help but either get it in early or don't bother because hangovers get worse and worse as time goes on typically, and you'll just wind up throwing it back up almost immediately and throwing up barely digested food is fucking NASTY. In theory, eating foods rich in vitamin B will speed up the recovery from the nausea of the vitamin deficiency but I have never noticed much effect.

Ok onto prevention. The first tip is obviously the simplest one. Drink water. Drink as much water as you do alcohol, ideally. Water is really easy to drink and its good for you, and is free in most places. The second tip is somewhat more contentious, but has proven invaluable to me. Drop two berocca into a glass of water before you start drinking, keep up the water consumption throughout the night, and then have another berocca before you pass out, or when you wake up if that isn't possible. If you can do these two things you can basically drink as much as you want and wake up feeling much more functional than you have any right to be.

Onto causes: there's a lot of myths around what causes a hangover.

Things that DO cause a hangover:

- Drinking alcohol. DUH
- Drinking really poor quality alcohol. I'm not talking like just dirt nasty scotch, I'm talking about some grain alcohol shit your cousin brewed up and tested out on you. If you drink this shit even in small quantities, you will almost certainly get a hangover unless you are extremely  vigilant with the methods described above.
- Drinking without a good meal in you first. Eat before you drink. You'll be able to drink more and you probably won't black out and leap onto the hood of a car stopped at a red light screaming "OUT OF MY WAY, CUNTS"
- Drinking really sugary drinks

Things that do not cause or exasperate a hangover:
-Drinking different types of alcohol. This is a complete myth. There's no science behind it and if you have an anecdotal experience involving switching types of alcohol you probably just drank too much of each. It can be hard to keep track of standards if you are switching between alcohol.

That said, I have been told that there is no actual reason why some alcohols would cause a hangover over others if they aren't just brewed in a bathtub, however I will always get more hungover on beer or red wine. Other people have related similar problems, but for every person that agrees, another person will have another type of alcohol that specifically gives them a hangover. Honestly, just follow the preventative tips I talked about above and it shouldn't be a problem anyway.

Hope this helps.

I'm inclined to think that if you know this much about this subject you're either a medical professional or you have drinking issues. Kinda hoping for the first option here.

I get vicious hangovers, headache-wise. I'm also a migraine sufferer. Does the propensity for migraines mean that I have a natural weakness for all headaches including hangovers or is that just so much bull?

To avoid hangovers, by the way, I do the boring thing and don't drink that much anymore. I have also switched to insanely expensive scotches which are just better.

It's really cute you're so concerned for me when you've never met me.

I am heck of into all the scientific aspects of alcohol as well as the practical aspects so I have cobbled together a pretty good knowledge of what is actually useful and WHY it is useful, just in case you were wondering.

I was going to make an indepth thread about cocktails but I could always just not if people are going to go around assuming crap like this about me for it.

Brett,

I am someone who has done very little drinking due to various factors not related to my health. I could drink a lot more than I currently do. I have no idea where to start. If you were to make a thread devoted to drinking alcohol and the various things about it. I would check it every single day.

There actually are reasons that certain alcohols cause worse hangovers. Cheaper commercial liquor has not been distilled as many times and therefore has a higher methanol content (There's no way to completely eliminate methanol from ethanol, but you can certainly lower the amount in the alcohol). Darker varieties (like whiskey, scotch, etc.) get a lot of their flavor from the wood barrels they're aged in, and some of the compounds that they can pull out of the wood do not play nicely with your body.

For me, the best way to avoid a hangover is to drink a whole bottle of gatorade combined with a few tylenol or advil the night I was drinking. Sugar adsorption by the intestines will actually drive water uptake, so gatorade will hydrate you better than just plain water. I don't drink more than a bottle before I got to sleep, both because too much liquid can make you throw up. The next morning it's all greasy food and more gatorade, sometimes with some pepto if I'm feeling especially crappy.

I too would like to know how to negate the consequences of my own actions.

i can't speak for everyone, but personally when i drink i don't purposely aim to get sick and end up with a hangover. again, when i get them it's pretty rare but usually it's more to do with the fact that i happened to stay up late and gradually drink a lot throughout the night without realizing it cos i was having a good time with people i like, and less to do with sitting down and deliberately taking shot after shot in an attempt to give myself alcohol poisoning. sometimes they just sneak up on you, it happens.

How are we managing to have a whole thread about this when the How Hangovers Work and How Alcohol Works pages exists?

Personally, I don't really think of hangover management as dodging the consequences of your actions. Then again, my idea of hangover management is avoiding one in the first place via tapering off my intake and rehydrating as the night draws to a close.

Reiterating from the picture thread, hikes! Easy ones, not the ones that make you want to puke even if you haven't been drunk recently. I'm still young enough that mine are pretty minor, so getting my butt up and moving and in air that doesn't smell like alcohol/puke/people from the night before does the trick.

That and gatorade.

hangovers get worse and worse as time goes on typically

Yeah, why is this? Occasionally I'll wake up after a night of moderatly heavy drinking and feel great, go about my day like normal, eat normally, drink lots of water (1L/4hr, in a typical day, whether or not I was boozing) but come 2pm I'm in agony. It's what I've dubbed a "creeping hangover", in that it creeps up on you.

That is the exact opposite of my drinking experiences.

Also, I hold that Manda's hangovers must be more along the lines of mild sleep deprivation (alcohol can lower how much time you spend in REM sleep) rather than a true "I don't think my liver made it home last night" hangover.

I know the exact same feeling. And I mean exact. New Year's Eve before last I was at one of my friend's parties, everyone got wasted, and I called the short straw and had to sleep on the floor because so many people were sleeping over and there just wasn't enough room. I basically had a pillow and a blanket way too small for me, I tried the carpet, the rug, the hardwood floors, the staircase and a wooden chair before I passed out on the bathroom tile cradling my pillow in my arms and face planted to the floor.

Speaking of, I'm drinking heavily this Saturday and I plan on not getting a hangover by setting a strict limit on the number of drinks for the night. Mine is 10, to know your own though, this information can only be found in experience, unfortunately. The best way to know your limit is by how much you weigh. The heavier or the taller usually have an ability to hold a little more before hitting their brownout/blackout/half-a-day hangover. Once you've got this limit, keep it! The more you drink the easier it is to keep downing them, try to focus on why you set that limit in the first place, drunken dancing is fun but downing one too many and performing a strip tease for everyone is hopefully enough to put the fear of god in most people.

Next I make sure I drink at least 3 cups of water before bed, though as much as one cup per drink you've had is ideal. On a side note this is why I don't like beer, it fills you up, makes you piss more and you won't want to drink the water, hard liqour makes me want a chaser and by god if it doesn't hurt so good.

Lastly if I know where I'll be sleeping that night I usually grab either a lemon/lime flavored soda or gatorade/powerade and have it chilled and ready in the morning. that and sunchips/corn chips/saltine crackers as an early morning breakfast of champions and it helps that slow creeping hangover that comes after you've woken up and started feeling dizzy as you go take your morning piss.

Until I stopped smoking, my hangover cure was to smoke a bowl while dumping out, hop in the shower, drink a cold beer while I let the water remind me that life is okay, then go hve a cigarette, coffee, hella water, and two fried eggs. A little work out to sweat the toxins is good too.

I think that actually might work, if nothing else just sticking to the routine would probably be therapeutic by keeping your mind off of being sick and instead moving to the next thing, of which a couple at least I know definitely work on their own.

I usually just drink a lot of water before I go to bed, but I've heard that vitamin C also works?

i do not get hangovers myself but after a particularly heavy night of drinking on st.patrick's day, my boyfriend ended up with a massive hangover, and we tried to research hangover cures and taking vitamin c was the most sensible suggestion out of the bunch we found. i gave him vitamin c tablets with water, but just drinking orange juice would probably work as well.  also, i am not sure about this greasy food business. i figure something bland that won't upset your stomach would be better.

I agree on that, usually I have an iron stomach but if I do find myself in a hangover greasy food just won't stay down. This is why I do the nice dry salted chips, though maybe the greasier Lay's type brand potato chips would work at least a little?

See, I thought I wasn't going to keep it down either.  My stomach was upset all morning, but that burger and fries just stayed down and felt absolutely brilliant afterward.

I typically cap myself at 8 beer or so, and also drink all of a 1-liter Nalgene bottle, plus an extra 20 oz. Dasani from whatever convenience store someone drives me to.

I haven't really had wretching hangovers, but from my experience fresh fruit really helps you through, watermelon especially.

I typically cap myself at 18 beer or so, and also drink all of a 1-liter whisky/rum bottle, plus an extra 40 oz.

Then drink some water, maybe a lucozade lemony caffine thingy, toblerone bar, some gummi bears, bag of cookies, a pizza or kebab or fallafel then sleep, get up and feel great.

That's what I would have typed if I were you.

One of my weirdes hangovers was that i woke up and noticed that i had all my Abba casets were on me, at this point i was freaking ou because i had listened them,
But rest of the day went hysterically laughing at everything and i was pretty happy.
I rarery get bad hangovers but one time i had really bad one thanks to cheap champagne and it lasted freaking two days.

Honestly a pot/cup of tea is basically the best solution. It is easy as all hell to stumble into the kitchen and get the kettle boiling and it requires virtually no preperation or forward planning (who doesn't have tea bags, milk and (if you need it) sugar in their home? Hands down, America.) Plus you're getting a lovely water and caffeine injection combined with the calming properties of tea. Maybe put some street fighter on (assuming you're recovering with friends) and make a day of it.

In general I don't eat until late afternoon after a night of heavy drinking because I can't stomach it, but it is very important to eat when you feel able to.

My dad is so 'old country'. I was hungover recently, after puking up red wine three times before work. His solution was to 1) laugh at me 2) inform me that the best hangover cure, which was known by everyone, apparently, was pickle brine.  I was not having it. Pickle juice is really the last thing you want to drink after you've vomitted and your throat burns like hell. Maybe that was just his strange way of suggesting we should get some dirty martinis or something.
