Let's say you were to have an original soundtrack playing in the background of your life all the time, depending on the mood/atmosphere. Who would you hire to compose the music?

I'd say Jon Brion; his work for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind alone is enough for me. Just listen to "Peer Pressure" or "Phone Call" off of the soundtrack and you'll see what I mean.

  • Oh, hey.

Mogwai, Sigur Ros, or Explosions in the Sky. I think those pretty much speak for themselves.

That was Danny Elfman.  You probably don't want him to compose your life soundtrack.

Unless you want your life to sound like The Nightmare Before Christmas/a billion shitty Disney movies, you do not want Danny Elfman as the soundtrack to your entire life.

If I had to pick actual composers, I'd have Holst or Prokofiev or Mozart do it, just because I want my life to sound more badass than it truly is. If we're talking about an actual musical representation of my life, you would be well off to pick some Strokes, some Built To Spill and some Pavement, you'd have me pretty well covered.

If I had to hire somebody I would hire Efrim Menuck. But I think this is a silly thing to pay for so if he wouldn't do it for free I would just write that jaunt myself.

Neil Young obviously.

The only rule would be no strings at all for any reason.

Awww yeah.  Neil FTW.

Actually, I would pick Lennon/McCartney since together, they could write such bitchin' rock songs and such soothing soft songs (alliteration unintentional).

Andrew Bird would be pretty cool.

I'm actually surprised Andrew Bird hasn't done a soundtrack yet...

Britt Daniel & Brian Reitzell, Yo La Tengo, Andrew Bird, Mogwai (in quiet, Christmas Song type mode) and Jeph Jacques (not Deathmole)

Or just Casiotone for the Painfully Alone.

I never meant that my life was epic enough to warrant a post-rock band; mostly I just said those because it would make it SEEM more epic.

I imagine it would make your life seem something like this:

It'd be more like:

Scene 1: Waking Up

Your alarm clock goes off.

You: Uuughhh... (Quiet guitars start tinkling faintly in the background.)

You sit up in your bed and the guitars get louder.  You make your way to the bathroom for a shower and the drums crash to life building to a thunderous crescendo as you step into the shower.  When you turn off the water and get out to to towel off, the music loses its vigor and slowly quiets to chiming guitars again as you get dressed for the day.

Definately Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. He scored movies like: The Visitor, Finding Neverland, Lost Souls, The Third Miracle, and a lot more.

Anywho, I'd love for my life to be soundtracked by Matt Pike. It would make me seem like a real badass.
