Album Elimination Game - NOMINATION Thread
« on: 16 Mar 2009, 14:04 »

Ok, decided to take it upon myself, (mostly 'cause I don't feel like going back to work). As per this thread, we're rehashing the old game (can be found on the Quiki, link forthcoming). This time we're eliminating albums.

Rules
  • You may nominate up to ten albums
  • One album per band
  • No multiple-nominations (e.g., no nominating Bat Out of Hell ten times)
  • Please italicize the album names and leave the artist name plain (or bold)
  • Keep the conversation to the other thread if at all possible. (Ha!)
  • You have until 20:00 GMT on 23 March 2009 to get your nominations in. (Time may be adjusted based on whatever we arbitrarily decide upon.)

Rules may be modified also as per whatever we need to adjust them for.

Edit #1 - I probably should have mentioned these:
  • At the end of the designated time, the sixty-four (64) albums with the most nominations will make up the bracket. Rules for the bracket placement will be determined at a later time (i.e., when I have time to figure it out and don't have to read 100+ pages for my ethics class, or when I can look up the rules for the old tournament. It probably has to do with something like the number of initial nominations it gets, etc.)
  • If, at the end of the designated nomination time, there are not enough albums with multiple nominations, the bracket may be reduced to 32.
  • If, in the event of a massive amount of tying (tie-ing?) albums (40 albums with 2 votes each) that puts the bracket over the designated 64-album bracket, a fair and decisive way of culling the list down will happen. I've not determined that yet. (Again, I'll look at the rules for the old tournament.)
  • You MAY change your votes, but please EDIT your original post. Any extra posts in this thread will be ignored. This ain't Chicago.

    Go!

The Stage Names (Okkervil River)

I've skewed mine slightly to bring a little more genre diversity to the list. However all of these albums are not only personal favourites but also, in my opinion, perfect or near-perfect musical statements. Two of them are live albums:

Louis Armstrong: Plays W.C. Handy
Same Cooke: One Night Stand - Live at the Harlem Square Club
The Miles Davis Quintet: 'Round About Midnight
Edward Elgar: Cello Concerto (performed by Jacqueline du Pre, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli
The Bill Evans Trio: Waltz for Debby
The Go-Betweens: Tallulah
Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um
Dolly Parton: The Grass is Blue
The Sundays: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic
The Waterboys: Fisherman's Blues

A good system would be that bands with more than one or two nominations (even different albums) qualify and then we have to vote on the best album of those nominated before having them face off against other albums by other artists.

For example, there's already several nominations for Silkworm, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Low.

Since this is about albums, not bands, surely we should be ignoring the bands all together? Every album nominated should go on, even if that means we end up with some bands with a couple of different albums on the list. After all, if we restrict it to one album per band then this is basically going to be exactly the same as the band elimination polls, since people will vote generally for the band they prefer in match-ups of different bands. If no one album by a band proves popular enough to go on the list, then too bad. However, I think increasingly tactical voting is not going to present much problem on this front.

I agree with this.  IMO, if a band is good enough to record multiple great albums, they deserve multiple spots in the bracket.
