Music you can't listen to anymore
« on: 20 Mar 2009, 16:35 »

Hey hey.

The AV Club has an "ask the editors" sort of feature and this week the topic was "Music you can't listen to anymore" and it seemed like a good enough topic for a thread here.

If you're like me (and you are because you're all nuts) you latch on pretty hard to your music thus as it becomes a part of you, you become a part of it. So who you were, what you experience when you're putting that song or album on repeat bleeds into the stuff.

When I was entering 8th grade puberty had set on for a few years prior but at that particular point, the hormonal floodgates opened and I went from a shy, reserved kid to a bugged-out, long haired, pasty spaz. And all my emotions became 14x bigger than they had been previously, it was like a face blast of sad or happy or mad or whatever. Feeling the imminent need to be social despite having social skills in a school full of kids going through similar hormonal implosions was about as bad as you can imagine. And for that entire year or so I listened to the Matrix Soundtrack and Deftones' White Pony. After that I couldn't listen to either, I still can't to this day without reverting back to the sort of confused animal terror that peels the paint off the walls. The good news is that becoming deadened to the Deftones prevented me from getting much further into the nu-metal scene that was all a-rage at the time. I can proudly say I've never owned or enjoyed a Limp Bizkit or Korn record. But as I got into high school I got into early 90's industrial metal which is basically proto-nu metal.

Let's hear yours. I want to read depressing shit.

Well I can no longer get as much enjoyment from the flaming lips song the W.A.N.D. That song used to be a favorite of mine, but one time when I was listening to it, high as a fucking kite (natural high, not drug assisted), I crashed, hard (is that the proper terminology? I do not know, thats just what it was like) and freaked out completely. ever since then I could not listen to that song to its full effect, I usually just skip it when it comes up.

I find it hard to listen to the dark side of the moon for almost the same reason, there have been a few times when listening to it was just fantastic, and now listening to it in anything other than ideal circumstances, otherwise it feels as though I am sullying that memory.

Thats about it other than a few other things which I would really rather not say.

My first year of high school was especially bad. High school is a bad time for a lot of people, but my first year was my worst, possibly the worst year of my life to date, although I'm sure I have plenty more time for other years to bump it from the top spot.  Anyway, I had always been bad at making friends, and at the very beginning of freshman year I was pretty emotionally hollow, as being dumped by my first girlfriendthe previous summer was for some reason especially hard on me.  So at the time when everyone was getting to know each other and as social groups were coalescing and quickly hardening, I was holed up within myself, resisting friendly new faces and not so friendly ones, bitterly hating them all pretty much alike.  At the time I was into some pretty silly stuff, like, say, Deftones, Marilyn Manson and Cradle of Filth, but what I especially latched onto at the time, oddly enough, was one album by a band called The Jazz June, They Love Those Who Make the Music. I listened to it pretty much constantly that year, and it quickly became the proverbial soundtrack to my life, not to mention the first time I began to do terrible things to myself. I listened to it to cheer myself up when I got sick because I hadn't eaten in a day and a half or so.  Luckily the album seems to be relatively obscure as I haven't heard it since I deleted it from my computer a few years ago.

On a slightly related note, I'll always remember that the day that same girl dumped me, my first ever girlfriend, she did it right after we finished watching the movie Coffee and Cigarettes, which she said she could barely sit through as it was so boring.  One could hardly expect a 13 year old girl to appreciate Jim Jarmusch, but I do take some small satisfaction in knowing that while I was starting to have a real interest in good movies, her taste in them was rubbish.

I have an incredibly mundane yet incredibly sad story for this, but I'd rather not go into it.

Let's just say I don't like listening to just about anything by the Eagles, both for reasons of taste and because my stepfather is a scumbag.

My ex got me into Imogen Heap. I can't really listen to her anymore.

Thing is, I was the one who broke things off with her. I've never felt heartbroken by the ordeal but thats exactly what I hate. Whenever Imogen Heap comes on I think about how much time I wasted on a girl I didn't love.

We had a pretty bad relationship as well so a lot of memories come up which depress me.

I also can't listen to the album Nostromo by SleepResearch Facility, or I freak out. Bad trip..

I don't think it's fair to lump the Deftones in with the nu-metal movement. Deftones were always more interesting than that (admittedly not hard, but still).

Well, this is basically what happened with Leonard Pierce's story. Back in September, my best friend, which I had a crush on for about 2 years, and I joked about silly stuff, and it came to her mind that I should "marry her" (You know teenage silliness). We've grown closer than ever during a week or so and she told me she felt weird about me (read: She told me she thought she was in love with me), I said that I felt the same way about her. The next day, we had a school outing with our science class. For an entire day, we were always together, cuddling and stuff. That's when Your Arms Around Me by Jens Lekman came on my MP3. I was incredibly happy with her, but that night, we were both on MSN and she told me she loved me, but felt too weird about that situation, so she didn't want to continue that relationship and she wanted to come back to our previous "best friends relationship". It really, really bummed me out but I said that I respected her decision and that I wanted to stay her best friend too.

I love Jens Lekman's music, but that's the only song I can't listen to anymore. Whenever I hear the first notes, I change the song. I never deleted it though.

I have a huge list of bands I don't listen to anymore.  Top names are as follows:

Panic! at the Disco, Boys Like Girls, Anberlin, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Underoath, Atreyu...The list continues, but you get the idea.  I had shitty taste in music.

That said: I can't listen to songs by Dashboard Confessional anymore without stewing in angst due to a failed relationship with a girl who, in retrospect, I didn't even like all that much.

Somehow, I wish that were more depressing.

I had an interesting moment sometime last summer when I realized that music I'd previously thought I couldn't enjoy anymore was actually losing its negative charge and I could enjoy it on the terms I enjoy music now, instead of reverting back to when I was blaring it through my crappy packaged-with-the-cheap-CD-player headphones for a significant portion of an uncommonly unpleasant summer between junior and senior years of high school.

The song in particular was "Gonna Leave You" by Queens of the Stone Age, and the story goes a bit like this: that summer, my best friend had become really enamored of his girlfriend at about the same time that I got to be really good friends with her.  However, she had rather strict parents, so the only time they got to spend together was time spent with me as well ... her parents wouldn't let her hang out with boys outside of the house, or for that matter one-on-one in her house, but if there were more than one it was fine (because presumably no shenanigans would be expected then ... I think she had to lever for that, at that).  So basically, since I hung out with them on very close to a daily basis, I was their excuse for getting frisky.  I spent many an awkward hour attempting/pretending to tune out of them making out across the room by playing my burned Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss mix CDs at top volume (for a while I actually did succeed, but it didn't last long).  The shitty thing I started to do, though, was to sing softly along to the breakup-themed songs (specifically "Gonna Leave You," "Another Love Song," and "You Can't Quit Me Baby"), just loud enough for them to hear me.  Basically I was really attracted to her, and developing a really strong connection to her, and very much unhappy with the situation of being her boyfriend's best friend, and my way of expressing this to them was not something I will ever be remotely proud of.

"Gonna Leave You" was the song that I was particularly unfond of by the time that situation resolved itself (Nick Oliveri's lyrics are hardly a friendly message to send to someone you presumably value highly).  I did not listen to that song very often after that, and I enjoyed it less each time until stopping for a while altogether.  However, listening to it 5 years later, I've found myself really getting into it and remembering why Queens of the Stone Age were my favorite band for so long.  The people involved are still my best friends, so I guess that probably has something to do with it.

Thinking about it, there's three bands I can't listen to anymore.

I enjoyed Limp Bizkit (among various other dodgy bands) back in year 8. However, while I still find Blink 182, Offspring and Korn relatively enjoyable (really enjoyable if I'm drunk) I can't take any of this band. Mostly it's because I hate Fred Durst.

Sufjan Stevens and Death Cab for Cutie were my favourite bands for perhaps one month back in '06. I had an extremely brief and bizarre indie kid phase, probably because of some girl issues at the same time. The only thing remaining from that phase is this comic. The things love can do to you, eh? Needless to say I haven't listened to that shit since.

I can't really think of any music I can't listen to now because of something than just growing out of it and knowing that, in hindsight, it was pretty shit. Limp Bizkit is a good example; I was eleven or something and they said fuck a lot and that was enough for young me.

This has only happened at one or two points in my life in which I grew out of a lot of music at once.

It's for slightly different reasoning than most people I think - but I can't listen to Muse any more.

I never thought they were genre-blending super-genii, I still defend them against Radiohead comparisons and I still think a couple of their tunes - 'Stockholm Syndrome' and 'Knights Of Cydonia' - are great. But I went to a gig of theirs in 2003, when I was 15, my first major gig ever, and it was so loud that I've had tinnitus ever since. Now I'm so bitter about it that I can't stand to listen to their music any more.

You seriously got tinnitus from one gig? I saw Sunn O))) front row, no earplugs, and got no ear damage. Are you sure it was solely from that one show?

Firstly, if your ears ring from a gig at all, that means they're permanently damaged, it just isn't necessarily anything audible.

Secondly, I have Asperger's Syndrome (I found this out three years later) and am as such hypersensitive, which probably had something to do with it.

Also, even taking into account earplugs - or the times I forgot them, no less - Muse was still the most phenomenally loud gig I've been to.

I'm a bit surprised that bands aren't getting sued for damaging people's ears.

It will be a sad, sad day when this day comes.

I find it hard to listen to the dark side of the moon for almost the same reason, there have been a few times when listening to it was just fantastic, and now listening to it in anything other than ideal circumstances, otherwise it feels as though I am sullying that memory.

I hear you. I used to be Pink Floyd obsessed for years, and now I rarely listen to them. The last time I listened to Dark Side of the Moon was while driving down the highway at midnight, no other cars around. It was perfect.

I wish I could forget a lot of music so that I could rediscover it.

I used to listen to a lot of Nickelback as a younger, angsty teenager. Now, I listen to some of it and I really enjoy it - a lot of it I listen to and realize how bad it is.

For a long time I had a problem listening to the Allman Brother's "Melissa" after breaking up with my girlfriend of the same name. I was upset over her for well over a year, but have since regained the ability to listen to the song.

Also: American Pie. I used to be able to listen to this song until I heard it for the 6,009,120 time and something inside of me snapped.

The four bands I've been obsessed with and can no longer listen to are:
Iron Maiden - I learned how to play guitar by sitting down for three months and learning all the songs off the first four albums. I'm pretty over it, but it's weird when I look back just how much I loved them.
The Smashing Pumpkins - I was thirteen/fourteen, and damn, did it ever ring true. But now I know better.
Muse - Epic, sweeping, ambitious...Boring after continued listening.
Radiohead - No growth or excuses here, I simply played them way too much. The only albums I can still listen to are Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief.

Can't find it. I must have been mistaken. But any band playing at 129.5 Db should get sued often. Any band playing in loincloths and drenched in oil should be sued even harder.

I'll try to be more on topic now.

These days I cannot seem to listen to Helloween anymore. There was this brief moment in time when Keepr I and II and Walls of Jericho were absolutely perfect and brilliant and so forth and so on. But now ... it just seems so aged. So full of fluff and little substance. There just don't seem to be any real songs there. Just a lot of, I don't know, guitars and stuff? Never a song.

Can't listen to The Mars Volta and Radiohead anymore.  I just listened to them too much, and they got boring.

But then, with TMV, its just all the stuff only potheads can like, in between the sheer awesomeness they sometimes throw at you, that turns me off to them.

Also, I can't listen to Blindside, but I could all the time back in '04.  Girl problems.

The summer is the worst season of music for me, because...whatever I like during the summer is inevitably going to sound dry and dull when the heat goes away.  The summer ruins a lot of music for me.  There are a few exceptions, like Placebo, but my taste for their music hardly survived the summer of '07.

I used to be heavily into Green Day. Now I can't get halfway through any of their songs with wanting to break something. They just make me angry.

The Beatles are hard sometimes, too. Occasionally I can bust out "Hey Jude" or "Come Together," but I listened to them so goddamn much in my tweens that I can't help but be bored with them.

Oh, and fuck Snow Patrol now.

Wow, Pat. It is so obvious you're not from England. I'm not one of the people who would make the comment because I have no major issues with the Patrol, but I think most self-respecting English forumites would tell you that 'you can't make Snow Patrol any worse.'

Let's play with metaphors! If Snow Patrol is a staph infection from the time your girlfriend scratched your back during a really awesome boning session, imagine the horror when a couple of weeks later you notice burning blisters on your dick. That, sir, is Leona Lewis covering Snow Patrol.

(I actually really like a lot of Snow Patrol so that metaphor is strictly for the haters)

I don't have any songs/ albums/ genres that I don't listen to anymore. Just ones that I listen to less often.

I'm a bit surprised that bands aren't getting sued for damaging people's ears.

I thought I read something about My Bloody Valentine being sued for ear damage once because some guy didn't wear earplugs.

Can't find it now, so it's possible I am talking shit

I like a few Snow Patrol songs myself, though I do hate 'Chasing Cars' too. It's just based on this forum's previous form I expected hatred.

I have all this crappy metalcore and nu-metal from a phase in the beginning of high school. I haven't been able to listen to most of it for a while, though a few of the artists are listenable just for nostalgia.

I can listen to Kate Bush just fine, but I can't watch her videos anymore, particularly when she tries to "dance". Elaine in Seinfeld is the epitome of grace in comparison.

Can't really think of anything in my collection that I've outgrown or got sick of, but I was always rather picky. Closest is a handful of albums where the quality dropoff of the act was intolerable, but it didn't make me not like the earlier albums.

You seriously got tinnitus from one gig? I saw Sunn O))) front row, no earplugs, and got no ear damage. Are you sure it was solely from that one show?

This guy is NOT human.

I used to be all about Killswitch Engage and the Deftones. I haven't listened to either in years. That said though, I kinda stopped listening to Killswitch Engage after Howard Jones joined and figured "eh, singing's better than screaming".

Heh, I'd agree with KsE. I really can't stand Howard, but I'm not terribly ashamed to admit that Alive or Just Breathing was, and still is, one of my favourite albums. It's the only metalcore album out there that managed to transcend the crappiness of that genre.

Also: People stop listening to Maiden and Manowar? Seriously, what the hell.

Girl I was in love with told me that "Gravity" by The Fold expressed how she felt about me.

A bit later, she said nevermind, I actually don't feel that way. Broke my heart.

I still can't listen to that song, I skip it whenever it comes on shuffle.

I dated a guy for an age; he listened to almost nothing but Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix.  Since I wasn't a big Zeppelin fan, he gave me a bunch of it (read: their entire catalog).  I haven't been able to listen to anything by either of them since then.  I'll get over the Zeppelin, but I kinda miss the Hendrix.
For similar reasons, no more Jens Lekman for me, either.

I'd believe it.  I saw them at ATP:NY, and they weren't letting people through the doors without having a pair.

Occasionally I can bust out the first half of Hey Jude. I don't need four fucking minutes of na na na na na na na na na na na Hey Jude na na na na na na na na na na na na Hey *breaks something*
