What the hell Rob, they can't all be Seattle. Then no one would EVER win!

Christ, why did I bench Varitek? =/

Probly 'cause he's an aging catcher who couldn't hit his weight last season. I don't think his resurgence could have been reasonably expected.

Well it was more "meant to bench Cody Ross and put Varitek in as a utility player and forgot".

Weekly Wrap-up, Matchup 2

Discworld sweeps the pitching categories as they take down the anemic Yammonsters 10-4-0.
Yammonsters MVP: Robinson Cano (7 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, .370 AVG, .414 OBP)
DEATHs MVP: Clayton Kershaw (7 IP, 13 K, 1 QS, 1.29 ERA, 0.29 WHIP)

The Zombies get a monster week from their hitters as they chow down on McFeely's Deliveries, 9-2-3.
Zombies MVP: Ian Kinsler (9 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6! SB, .556 AVG, .600 OBP)
Deliveries MVP: Joe Saunders (7 IP, 3 K, 1 W, 1 QS, 1.29 ERA, 0.57 WHIP)

HMS Dreadnaught strikes out a whopping 79 times for the week as they fall to the Placeholders 5-9-0, who post an impressive 2.77 ERA over 52 innings.
Dreadnaught MVP: Carlos Pena (6 R, 4 HR, 12! RBI, .333 AVG, .400 OBP)
Placeholders MVP: Zack Greinke  (14 IP, 19 K, 1 QS, 2 W, 0.00 ERA, 1.07 WHIP)

The Volcanoes win the lamest pitcher's duel on record as they somehow win the ERA category with a 5.30 for the week and smite the Fuck Stars 10-4-0.
Fuck Stars MVP: Paul Konerko (3 R, 2 HR, 9 RBI, .435 AVG, .462 OBP)
Volcanoes MVP: Javier Vazquez (12 IP, 20 K, 2 QS, 1 W, 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP)

The SABRs survive another hilarious Wang meltdown to beat the struggling Hefes 8-4-2.
Hefes MVP: Cody Ross (4 R, 3 HR, 11 RBI, .429 AVG. .480 OBP)
SABRs MVP: Glen Perkins (who?) (16 IP, 8 K, 2 QS, 1 W, 1.69 ERA, 0.81 WHIP)

The Tornadoes suffer a good old-fashioned pitching meltdown as they fall to the Imperials 6-8-0.
Tornadoes MVP: Raul Ibanez (7 R, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 1 SB, .550 AVG, .591 OBP)
Imperials MVP: Francisco Cordero (3 IP, 1 K, 3.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP, 3 SVHD)

The Yofaces win in an extraordinarily close game, as they slip past the Martinis 8-6-0.
Yofaces MVP: Ted Lilly (6.2 IP, 8 K, 1 QS, 1 W, 0.00 ERA, 0.45 WHIP)
Martinis MVP: Wandy Rodriguez ( 7 IP, 10 K, 1 W, 1 QS, 0.00 ERA, 0.57 WHIP)

Standings

Tied for 1st place: Yofaces, Imperials, and Placeholders at 2-0.
Tied for 4th place: Dreadnaught, Fuck Stars, Tornadoes, SABRs, Volcanoes, DEATHs, Zombies, and Yammonsters at 1-1.
Tied for 12th Place: Hefes, Martinis, and Deliveries at 0-2.

Stat Leaders

Runs: Dreadnaught, 58
HR: Zombies, 16
RBI: Zombies, 57
Strikeouts (hitters): SABRs, 33
Stolen Bases: Tornadoes: 15(!)
Batting average: Hefes, .325
On-base percentage: Tornadoes, .411
Innings pitched: SABRs, 70
Strikeouts (pitchers): DEATHs, 68
Quality starts: SABRs, 7
Wins: Tie between Imperials and Placeholders, 6
ERA: Martinis, 2.25
WHIP: DEATHs, 1.13
Saves plus holds: Tie between DEATHs and Yofaces, 5

The You Done Fucked Up! Award goes to the Yammonsters, who pick up Jordan Schafer after his hot first week only to watch him strike out 11 times during the second matchup.

The Raw Deal of the Week Award goes to the Martinis, who could have forced a tie with a single additional stolen base or save, and won the game with one of each.

The Ridiculous Stat of the Week: HMS Dreadnaught gets 17 runs in a single day.

Not a stat of the week but I want to mention it just because it's hilarious: Wang now has 23 earned runs in 6 innings of work for the season. He's definitely earning that Yankee salary.

This week's matchups:
Yammonsters vs. Deliveries
Placeholders vs. DEATHs
Volcanoes vs. Zombies
SABRs vs. Dreadnaught
Imperials vs. Fuck Stars
Martinis vs. Hefes
Yofaces vs. Tornadoes

Wang's season thus far was put into perspective for me by NESN SportsDesk. Wang would have to pitch something like three shutouts in a row to get his ERA back down to single digits, five shutouts for a league average ERA.

Glen Perkins (who?)

Poor guy was actually a first round pick. Some people got down on him as a prospect because he doesn't put up strike outs, but the dude throws a pretty decent fastball for a lefty and he's on a team that fields well and has a ridiculous home field advantage for whatever reason. He's the classic case of a pitcher screwed by the general public's fascination with Ks. He's pretty much easy money at home in league this deep though.

Man, some silly baserunning done tonight.  (here's looking at you, adrian gonzalez)

also god damn, who else saw Kerwin Danley take that bat to the face tonight?  That shit's ridiculous, how do these bats break so easy in the major leagues?

Bill Nye covered this once.

TLDR version: Modern players often grow up with metal bats and thus often neglect the fact that wooden bats are branded to show on which plane they are strongest. Light bats are also better for hitting for power since the speeds you can hit with them outweighs the lost mass. Combine the two and it's splinter city.

Pujols shattered one last night and the ball still reached the warning track. Nutter.

So hey guys, anybody still want to entertain trades for Prince "I'm hitting .163" Fielder? Anyone? Bueller?

A big part of it is the increased use of maple bats. I don't think that played a part in this situation, as the thing clearly just snapped in half (Indicating it was probably ash), but maple bats have played a huge part in the increase in broken bats the last few years. They tend to completely shatter instead of breaking, which has been getting increasingly dangerous.

As much as I like the guy (well, for a back of the rotation pitcher, anyway), I'm glad Glen Perkins is only starting once this week at Fenway.

I have never been so happy to mix up schedules before in my life.

Man, I'm really hoping my offense is just in a slump right now because goddamn the past 10 days or so have been pretty miserable. On the bright side, Haren is still a complete stud. Finally gets a win tonight to compliment his crazy 1.38 ERA through four starts.

Okay so every one of my starting pitchers has imploded somehow this week.  My best starter was Armando Gallaraga with 5 IP, 4K, 5.40 ERA and 2.00 WHIP.  Not one of my other starters had an ERA under 9.00

I'm doing okay, guys. My opponent's just doing a bit better right now. I should, hopefully, get a boost from the fact I have six starts left this week to my opponent's three.

I'll need at least a case of beer, EMC Level tickets for the Sox, and a blowjob, in addition to Jimenez.

Can I just say that I want to have Zack Greinke's baby? He is pretty much single handedly carrying my pitching.

I'd like to add my appreciation for my opponent's Matt Lindstrom, who's 94.5 ERA in 0.2 innings is certainly helping.

I'm just annoyed that my bargain basement pitching staff hasn't really been piling up innings like I need them to due to injury and constant rain. Also, which is the more arbitrary stat? Wins or Saves/Holds? Discuss.

Jeff Samarddsgskdnjzjnkjkjnsa is taking your place next week.

Fun fact: He SHOULD be playing in the NFL right now. He was a star tight end for Notre Dame, but also excelled in baseball to the point where he decided to go with baseball over football. Pissed my dad off to no end, because he thought the Raiders needed a tight end, and this was their guy.

dude the raiders need a lot more than a tight end before they become a legit football team again

Also, any games being played south of the Mason-Dixon Line today will not involve very much action.  Jesus H Christ it is hot today.

I say Saves for the sole reason that Texas Ranger Wes Littleton got a save for holding off the Orioles two years ago.

As a Minnesotan, I am not exactly sold on the idea of drafting a short (relatively speaking!) wideout who happens to have a gimpy ankle, a bad attitude and failed drug test on his resume. I mean, I don't really care about pot smoking in theory, but in the case of NFL players it always makes me wonder a bit about their decision making capabilities since failing a test can potentially cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions.

Then again, LT apparently spent his days trying to snort the 50 yard line, so there's definitely a case for the "Talent trumps all" argument.

I'm a little annoyed that the Niners traded away our second round pick when Everette Brown was still on the board and we need pass rushers badly, but from what I've heard our GM says it was for salary reasons so I guess I can put up with that. Especially since now we'll have two first round picks next season. Hopefully there will be some better QBs in that draft class because I don't think Shaun Hill is gonna cut it for long.

ETA: The Niners getting Crabtree..did they actually need a receiver, or was it just rubbing salt in the wounds of the Raiders for passing on him?

My only whine about the season is that I wish you could tweak the current matchup daily. I refuse to be held too responsible for things like Ricky Romero being given a retroactive DL spot after straining his arm by sneezing.

Oh, and it'd be nice if Jimmy Rollins would hit a fucking ball already.

Well, i guess my beginner's luck couldn't hold out forever. And Coco Crisp should be the team's MVP this week, what the hell?

My only whine about the season is that I wish you could tweak the current matchup daily. I refuse to be held too responsible for things like Ricky Romero being given a retroactive DL spot after straining his arm by sneezing.

That was really the only sensible way to handle it with the weekly matchups. It wouldn't be particularly fair the other way and would've made balancing the lineups much harder for people who can't dedicate fully to it like us baseball nerds.

It's not like you're the only one getting hurt by it, though. Soto's injury pretty much killed me the first week.

Alex, why did one of your players steal 5 bases today? Like, really, did he have to be that much of a dick about it?

Oh, you mean Fowler? He's gonna steal fifty bases at some point. Maybe not this year, but he will. The dumb part is that he looks kinda confused out there sometimes. He just happens to be ridiculously fast. My uncle claims to have had a man-crush on him since the dude was sent to the Beijing olympics, but I think he's full of shit.

Oh, hey, Jimmy Rollins! Glad you could make it! Another few games like that and you might actually break .200.

You are killing my team.

Oh hey Alex.  I would like to direct your attention to one Adrian Beltre.  He is batting worse than Rollins

Okay, you're missing a couple few points here:

1. Jimmy Rollins was my first pick.

2.  Until last night, he was almost exactly as bad as Beltre. He had 2 more homers, but also two less steals and less runs because he was actually managing to strike out more than Beltre.

3. Jimmy Rollins was my first pick.

My first pick has a .70 ERA and 37 strikeouts through 25.2 innings, just so everyone knows. He has actually struck out more people than he has allowed on base.

I think I did okay.

Yeah, usually Santana is a pinch more mortal in the first month; you know, a 3.80 ERA and a few fly outs that made him look vaguely hittable. Not like he's ever bad, mind you, just saying that it's practically unfair to hitters everywhere that he's mowing people down right out of the gate like this.
