-old book smell
-lilac smell (light purple kind, specifically--that smell means spring!)
-when someone you see all the time but don't know walks by and you're humming the same song (Two Gallants-Steady Rollin')
-cute boys finding you just to chat
-driving my car with the windows down and my hair flyin' all crazy
-the sound of rain on the roof of my lake cabin (each raindrop is like THWOMP THWOMP THWOMP)
-bein' all twitterpated at the beginning of a new relationship
-compliments from strangers
-coworkers who make you like going to work, because you get to see them
-hanging out with my mommy just to hang out
-birthdays!
-the part where you're almost done with the book but it's so exciting and fantastic and you can't put it down because you NEED TO KNOW what happens to the characters and how is it going to end OH MY GOD
-Riding my bike along the river path-you go under like three train tracks and it's so cool and there's animals all over
-tug of war with a puppy

- Spending the whole day in bed with someone!

- cuddles!

These things. A million times these things.

- The nervous feeling you get before playing a show, and the satisfaction of overcoming that and kicking ass
- Being appreciated, recognized, or compensated for your art which you created for yourself
- Smoking a joint while taking a bubble bath
- Ice cold bubble tea on a scorching hot day
- Red velvet cupcakes
- Working up a sweat while biking in the breeze

listening to sad songs at night.

kinda weird, but it makes me feel all warm inside.  i've spent the last hour listening to all The Replacements' slower, laid-back melancholy songs.

Having a niece.

Oh man yes. And all the fun things that go with a little kid.

helping her learn to walk
making funny faces
hysterical baby giggles
dancing to all the noise-making toys
replying to baby talk like it's a really serious conversation

When it is a beautiful day around you but you are feeling a little down, and nothing in the world seems particularly great, but as you walk through the beauty unnoticing you see a pretty person smiling, and it is a real and true smile, and even though it might not be at you you are infected with their happiness, and suddenly everything that seemed a bit dull and boring and mundane becomes bright and cheerful and generally awesome, and all the crapness is forgotten for a moment and you just smile too. This is probably my favourite thing.

Actually, just smiles in general. When someone is smiling and they really mean it. That's pretty awesome.

Also, when you find your passport in the crisps.

- The feeling of a rifle's bolt cycling after you fire (there is just something so very right about it)
- The feel of working a semi-auto rifle's bolt (probably has to do with the weight of metal shifting around and slamming forward once you let go)
- The smell of rain, whether through my window or out in the open
- Cloudy days
- Driving in the rain, watching the world outside and seeing the windshield wipers go back and forth
- Realizing that you are happy for absolutely no reason, and being genuinely glad to be alive in that moment (sure, it is being happy because you are happy, but it is rare and builds on itself)

On the subject of clumsy animals, last night I was sat in the kitchen and my kitty started making spluttering noises. I looked round and she had somehow got the elastic part of her collar hooked over her front bottom two teeth. I unhooked them for her and then turned away, and five minutes later I heard more spluttering noises and she had done it again.

It is a little cruel but there is really nothing cuter than watching a kitten trying to pull their collar out of their mouth with their front two paws. She looked like she was applauding her immensely unlikely achievement.

The collar has now been tightened, by the way, so that she doesn't do it again and die.

These things...especially when she is not actually your niece but you know that no matter what you will always be her Auntie Allie, there to spoil her rotten and love her to pieces.

Going on long car rides at night while it's snowing but it's warm and cozy in the car, eating something nummy and crumbly like cheese and crackers.

You know those bouncy things that hang in doorways and the baby can bounce up and down in it? My niece once fell asleep in one of those.

A 6 foot swell, a stiffening, offshore breeze, a nice, barrelling break with no one out. The sun out, one of those glorious 24 degree autumn days SW WA gets. It's hard to beat that feeling.

I too am a huge fan of storm clouds but that doesn't really get the same emotions going.

This

Except make it Scotland, make it a frosty morning in January and make it so that it's just a few people getting up at 5am to drive down to the beach. On the water by 7am watching the sunrise and waiting for the perfect wave. Time to pack up and you get in your giant jacket sit in the car and warm up till you have the most toasty contented feeling ever. Get back just in time for your lecture sitting there wondering why more people don't to this.

Nothing better then lack of crowds, really. I imagine Scotland would be great for that. WA's got a lot more surfers/bodyboarders, but a lot more coastline, too.
I love the idea of cold water bodyboarding (yes, I'm a lidder). I plan on heading to europe in 12-18 months or so for a year and I definitely intend on heading to scotland and norway for some cold water slabs. Should be epic.

Chickens being themselves is just a lot of fun. Trust me. I have three and they're an endless source of comedy.

Yeah Scotland is excellent for lack of crowds but kind of lacking in waves. East coast doesn't really get a hell of a lot, you really have to go up to Thurso or out to the islands to get the best waves. Luckily in a weeks time the pro competition is on up at Thurso and the surf club is heading up there to watch some sweet surfers and get some awesome surfing in at the same time.

Give us a shout when your heading out to Scotland, Dundee Uni surf club would be more than happy to go out for a surf with you.
