Blood Bowl: A Real Fantasy Sports Game
« on: 22 Apr 2009, 16:59 »

Alright, a few of us have started up with an online java based game called Blood Bowl recently. It's based off of a tabletop game and the gist of the game is that it is turn based American Rules Football but with ultra violence and fantasy themed teams. Orcs, Chaos beast, Humans, Elves, Goblins and the like all forming teams to pound each other senseless, while occasionally getting ahold of the ball and making a touch down. While I'm sure real football knowledge might help you for placement of players, it's not necesarry at all to enjoy the game.

The game is pretty strategy based so it does require some practice to get down, so getting in while all of us are learning is a good way of getting introduced along with the rest of us. Even if you aren't on any time soon with the rest of us there is a pretty active community with a lot of people willing to teach and the PDF with the rules is a free download. Also keep in mind that the very basics are best learned in game.

As I said, it uses a Java Client to connect the 2 players and your first game, like with most board games, is likely to take several hours but once you have the basics down, games take about 60 - 90 minutes. Players can be kicked out of games, KO'd, get permanent injuries or even killed. It's expected for payers to die or at least be retired at some point, so no point in getting too attached to any specific player.

Here are some important links to get you started.

http://fumbbl.com

http://fumbbl.com/help:

http://fumbbl.com/help:NewbieWhichRace

You'll want to download theJavabbowl 8.9 installer and the Living Rulebook from this link. http://fumbbl.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownload&cid=3

This is the suggest Java client to avoid lag. I tried the newest and it was terrible, but installing this older version fixed all of the issues I was having. http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/6u7/index.html

The community tends to use IRC a lot for matchmaking so if you're up for it, it's a good way of getting more experienced players to help you out and tear your teams apart in the attempt to beat good tactics into your skull. The forums are also an invaluable tool to get yourself started and learn how leveling your players works and what are good choices for leveling.

EDIT - Ok, things you should familiarize yourself with before you start your first game.

This link has more strategies and stariting line up suggestions for all of the races - http://fumbbl.com/help:RaceStrategy

This link has step by step instructions on how to setup a game - http://fumbbl.com/help:SettingUpGames

In the PDF, there are a fews pecific pages that will be amazingly useful from the start.

Page 11 - This has the list of Block Die icons. These are very very important to get down. Skulls are bad and a couple of other ones have conditions, but it's a good idea to memorize these icons as quickly as possible.

Page 34 - This is a list of skills. Some teams have a lot of skill based players so even for new teams this is a good lsit to get somewhat familiar with. At the very least, it's a good reference page.

Page 43 - This page has a list of handicaps and explanation. If you end up playing a stronger team, you'll get to roll for handicaps, and these are some of the effects. Not terribly common, but good to have for reference.

This is the most useful picture you will have starting off. This is the lsit of Die icons and what they do. Memorize this as quickly as possible.

We've gotten enough people that we've opted to make a Meebo room to avoid cluttering Pocket Jury. Just PM one of the coaches for the password.

http://www.meebo.com/room/qcbloodbowl/

Edit: Ok, found these gorgeous skins for the Pitch in the forums and thought we should share them.

http://tinyurl.com/yj54fwc

In the JBBowl/Pics/Fields path make a new folder and extract the files into that folder. Once you're in game you can use the right click menu to change what field options you want, which includes Pitch sie and Field Tiles.

Here are some player icon sets for those of you who have encounted games where players are showing up as just letters or missing pictures

Ultimate Pack - This one should cover 95% of your needs, it misses a few large icons though which is what you'll need the next one for
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?wznqndtmlzm
Large Pitch Pack - This includes a lot of large pitch stunty icons which is about the only thing that was neglected by the Ultimate pack
Code: [Select]

I was wondering what the hell all you guys in Meebo were talking about.

Whenever I'm not completely bogged down with going to class et al I will consider making a team.

The game really is a blast.

Tonight one of my players was killed, turned into a zombie, and then was killed again by one of erstwhile teammates.
Since players get skill points for causing casualties that means both teams got points for killing the same guy.

Holy shit I just had a great game. Ended up being tied on his half of the last turn of the game. Did a "Go for it" to get his last guy into the endzone... and fucking dropped the ball right into the endzone. You will have to watch the replay to understand, but I ended up making a full field run, from endzone to endzone, in the very last turn of the game.

Holy shit that was awesome. Not even any permanent injuries or death!

http://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=2642724

If you have the Blood Bowl client installed give it a watch.

The FUMBBL site as been around for awhile. I'm not sure how long but I've seen forum posts going back to 2004. There's a very useful User's Guide linked on the front page. It will pretty much tell you anything you need to know.
They've set up several different divisions for games.
From the website

Academy
A division for newcomers and people who want to become better at the game, without a permanent record or the competetive tone of the other divisions.
Faction
Highly competetive division that requires a high level of activity. Not recommended for newcomers to the game or FUMBBL.
Ranked
The main competitive division and the largest one on FUMBBL. Free choice of opponents, a ranking system and regular tournaments.
Blackbox
Newly created division with a high competition level. Scheduled matches in a blind system, with assigned matches.
Stunty Leeg
Highly unique division with custom races.
League
This division is designed for coach-run leagues. A large number of leagues and tournaments run here, using their own specific rules.
Unranked
This division follows the same rules as Academy, but without the TR150 cutoff. It is intended as a recreational division without rankings or non-LRB rosters. Back to back games vs same teams and or coaches are not allowed in this division.

We are currently playing in the Academy Division. If there's enough interest we could start up a QC League.

As Ackblom12 mentioned you can watch replays of games, not only yours but anyones. It's a good way to take a look at how other people play. You can also 'Spectate' and watch a game in progress. This is another excellent way to learn the game and see what tactics work or don't work as the case may be.

A nice touch is that you can set up multiple teams. I currently have a Human, an Amazon, and an Orc team. I plan on concentrating on my human team mostly though.

An ill-fated question perhaps, but do any of you think that Workshop is a crack-like dependency that will slowly whither you away and, ultimately, consume your soul?

Man Blood Bowl was around six years before that. It's nearly as old as I am. Also, the GW addiction never goes away. It's been years since I played any of their games and fuck me if I don't think about Space Marines stomping on people's faces every other day.

It's too bad that you don't have time to play. The more the bloodier merrier!
Most of the games I've played have taken around 2 hours. The longest was around 4 hours but that was me playing Ackblom12 in his first game online and we were doing a lot of chatting.
Okay, I was doing a lot of chatting.
The shortest was about 1.5 hours or so and that was last night's game against The_Pied_Piper. I think the reasons it was shorter is that we've both gotten comfortable with the interface, Elves are very fragile so he had less players to move as the game progressed, and both (mine mostly though) teams showed a remarkable antipathy towards picking up the ball. You see one of the things that will end your turn early is dropping the ball when trying to pick it up. My Orcs did that very well. Another way your turn will end early is if a member of your team gets knocked prone either after an attempted block His Elves did this very well.

Alex C, I will be happy to name a player after you so that in some small way you can be involved. Any preferences? I currently have a Human Team, an Orc team, and an Amazon Team. The Amazon team is named after the band members of Tokyo Brass Style so I don't think you'd fit in well there. If you'd prefer something else I'd be happy to create a new team.

I now have Alex Wisefang as a new Lineman. I plan to add Ratface as a Rat Ogre at some point. This should work out well.

Edit: I also just realized that Ozyratdias has almost twice the rushing of anyone else on my team but has also not gotten a single SP. I need to fix that.

It's crack.

It took me forever and a day to stop playing Workshop and to stop paying them ridiculous amounts of money for their twee little plastic gnomes of distilled evil.

The worst thing, though, is that every time someone talks about it or mentions a new edition, model, or range I want to start again. This hurts muchly.

They now have like 15 Leman Russ variants, including the Punisher, which can hurl out 9 heavy bolter shots and TWENTY S5 shots from it's turret weapon, PER TURN....

These and many more are unofficial rosters that are used in the Stunty Leeg.

You might want to add Pg. 19 The Kick-Off Table to the OP.
People are going to see that more often than the Handicap Table and knowing that the defender might get to Blitz is a handy thing.
I'd also like to take this moment to let everyone know that my fans tend to throw rocks.

Just a note of advisory re: loading games: Eric and I experienced this yesterday when trying to finish a game. If you load a game that was cut off at one point, both coaches must be using the same computers, using the same IP address. We had problems with this because I had changed connections at that point from the normal school connection to the guest one, and it gave me a totally different IP address. We must have tried reconnecting ten times before we figured what the problem was.

Everyone should've gotten invites for all of their teams.
Let me know if I missed anyone.

I'm still figuring out what having a Group means.
One thing I do know is that we can have Tournaments. However when we do we'll have to create new teams in the League Division to play in it.

Alright, we've got plenty of new people added to the coaching roster and we are currently trying to work out a tournament.

Also, goddamn I love the Khemri.

I'd say that my only complaint about the game is that Dorfs are incredibly unfun to play against until you got a few skilled players.

Fuck Dorfs.

Stupid Dorfs. I say this as someone who has a Chaos Dorf team. You've got your solid linemen who although painfully slow are hard to hurt and are good at hurting others and then you've got the Bull Centaurs who are not slow and have a higher ST than most. The only bad thing about the Bull Centaurs is their low AG and even that's not all that bad.

Of course you want to talk about your sick teams look no farther than Chaos. (I'm looking at YOU Mr. Ackblom.) They have okay speed and good AV and have access to disgusting skills (literally and figuratively). Apparently they are weak at start but are one of the stronger teams when they start getting some kills. So folks, remember when playing a starting Chaos team kick them when they're down!

We (Steve, Rob, and myself) are planning on running a tournament in Mid-June. We figure that way exams will be over and we might see some of the folk who signed up but haven't been around lately. For those people who still pop in from time to time I ask if you would please create a team in the League Division. Let me know when you have and I'll invite the team into the Group. We aren't going to try anything fancy the first time out since none of us have done this before. Any team you want to create is fine (even stupid Dorfs). The teams have to be in the League Division because the website will keep track of scoring and what-not for Tournaments but only for teams in League.

Will we all be starting with fresh teams, or should we get a few games under our belts in the League beforehand?
