The Melodica, a list thread
« on: 17 Jan 2009, 10:32 »

So I'm trying to compile a list of awesome song that feature the melodica. I am going to make a mix for my friend because he wants to buy a melodica.

Here is my list so far:

Joy Division - Decades
The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
Q and Not U - Soft Pyramids
Algernon Cadwallader - Horror (pretty sure they use it in another song too, but I can't remember off the top of my head)
Gang of Four - 5.45
A bunch of New Order songs.
Belle & Sebastian - Electronic Renaissance
AC Newman - Drink to Me Babe, Then

I'm sure you guys can add to the list!

Off the top of my head I know that "She's In Parties" by Bauhaus uses a melodica.

"Green Rain" by Shugo Tokumaru features an interesting melodica loop throughout the song.

I don't actually know any recorded songs with one, but there's this.

(I didn't know what a melodica was until two minutes ago.)

I think that's an accordion, but there's a segment at the end of Tannhäuser / Derivè (I guess it would just be Derivè) that has a melodica.

I believe a number of Los Campesinos! songs do, but I'm going to go for "The Internetional Tweexcore Underground" in particular because it has a great title and the melodica is clearly visible in the video.

Any chance of posting the mix up here when you're done?

(Feel free to say no, seeing as how it's a present and all, but I'd be pretty interested to hear it.)

Actually a friend of mine played me a John Frusciante solo record the other day and it opened with a song that had a stunning melodica line. I can't believe I typed that sentence but there you have it.

The Netherfriends use a melodica in a few of their songs, but they don't have a full-length out yet. :(

I'd be happy to post it, once I finally get around to making it. I have a congenital habit of planning to do things and not actually doing them.

Melodicas are actually pretty fun and easy to play and mad cheap if anyone's looking to pick up another instrument. Especially good if you play keys already and want to go and jam somewhere with no power/acoustic stylings.

Does anyone know any place to get free sheet music or whatever for melodicas? I just bought one a week or two ago, but I've never played a piano-esque instrument. I can read music and know which notes are which; I just don't have any music for it.

Isn't that just the accordion again, though? I always thought the higher notes would sound tinnier like that. Goddammit I wish I had my CDs at uni so I could check the sleevenotes.

You can play most stuff on the melodica if you transpose liberally. That said, you're better off picking either chords or melody and going with that, as the small range on the melodica makes it hard to play both. I'd just pick a song you like and learn the chord progression as a start, maybe? Print off a chord chart for piano if you don't already have one, that might help.

'Melodica and Trombone' by Fridge
'I Set My Face To The Hillside' by Tortoise... at least I assume that's melodica.

I have a melodica. It was hells of cheap on Ebay and came with a case and everything. I used it in college to accompany my roomate's dramatic readings of Jewel's poetry.

The more notes you add into a chord, the more breath it takes to sound it. Melodies are infinitely easier to play. But maybe my adorably cheap plastic instrument is just inferior. However, my roomate had a vintage metal one that was too sweet for someone not to steal, and it behaved the same way. I hope whoever took it likes it as much as I did.

Surely it's Clint Eastwood?  Doesn't actually come in til about the 2 minute mark.

Another one I thought of (the only song I like of theirs) is Over and Over Again by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.  It's heaps like New Order's use of melodica, mentioned upthread.
