24 Hours, May 2009
« on: 30 Apr 2009, 15:08 »

Is it really that time of year again already? Why yes, yes it is. It's time for the second annual 24 Hours May challenge! For those of you who already familiar with this, here's last years (incomplete) archive:
24 Hours, May 2008
There's two albums missing, but they'll probably appear someday.

The goal is simple: You have 24 hours to make a record.

When you're comfortable, start the clock. You then have 24 hours to produce a record by any means neccessary. When you're done, you post it here. At the end of the month, all the entries get posted on a blogger archive of the event.
This time there are no restrictions. It can be as long or short as you want, you can include as many covers or samples as you wish. Throw up a remix album if that's how you swing.

Get those creative juices flowing! Edit: Unless you're kinda busy or stressed out, like me. Then you don't have to. The rest of you? I'll fucking cut you if you don't take part.

Update: Backstreet Boys tribute record currently stands at...
1) Sox - Larger Than Life
2) A_Pack_of_Wolves - Everybody (Backstreet's Back)
3) October1983 - I Want It That Way
4) Christophe - Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely
5) Dynamite Kid - As Long As You Love Me
6) Patrick - Don't Want You Back
7) Billiumbean - Shape Of My Heart

For me, I'm going to have to convince someone to bring their mics and recording equipment over here, which could be tricky.

Hey, are we allowed to have other musicians playing in addition to us?

I had a lot of fun with this last year. I ended up recording myself and my cousin with a single Rock Band mic via my computer. I think we're gonna use his recording equipment (he does freelance professional recording and wants more fidelity), but I say, don't let fidelity get in your way. I also want to try and meet the requirements that were used last year (at least 30 mins, all original), but only because I had so much fun writing new stuff last year.

I'm looking forward to hearing the submissions!

Question:  is it 24 hours to record an album, or 24 hours to write and record an album?  Because I have a ton of songs that I have written which desperately need to be recorded, and I was wondering if those could count towards this (as long as they were all recorded within a 24 hour period).

Aw shit yes.

Checklist for album:
Bunch o' guitars: check.
Bassist: check.
Drummer: check.
Keyboards: check.
Bag o' weed: check.

Hell yes, I am so ready for this.  It might be around mid May, though.

Write and record. The exception would be if you were to produce a covers album, but you'd still have to learn them.

i'd be able to this if it was in June, as I'm still in school till then. I have enough of my guitar rig/drum programming/recording/mixing workflow down that if I do decide to do this, I could crank an album out over a weekend if I wanted to. Maybe if I am not super busy with schoolwork/workwork before the end of the month, I might surprise myself. Who knows. Probably not.  But maybe.

Aw, you know I'll always love you. I've just been really busy trying to finally get my degree after all these years, and I went and got myself a girlfriend so I don't spend so many nights aimlessly on the internet as I used to. Also, I remember coming on here a while back and most of the discussions were either about things I did not care about (equipment and bands I find tedious) or seemed like conversations I'd seen here umpteen times before. It seems better this time around though.

However, I have a load of work to get done in the next few weeks and therefore procrastination shall drive me back into the forum's arms.

It wasn't silence, it was badly recorded library noise (and a lecture?), but it pretty much sounded like nothing. I think I'd do something like that again if I ever get a decent microphone.

I have no equipment, just my laptop. Like last year. I will probably sit down on one of my off days and do this again. I was kind of sad I never got past 15 minutes on the last one, but I was silly and tried to do it during finals. No school to interfere now!

Okay. First attempt was not quite a success... I only knocked out 6 real songs in the 24 hours. If we're allowed to try again, I definitely will at a later point - I think it's a great exercise.

Without further ado, I present the mini-album that came out of this project. As you can probably tell, it's got a sort of sci-fi theme.

All instrumentals btw.

Right, I've finished with a few hours to spare. Don't reckon I've got another track in me. Sbe a bitort of a post-industrial/idm effort, maybe a bit more mainstream than my normal work, but on the other hand, maybe not.

Track List:

1: Wintermute
2: Heterodyning
3: Spiral Factory
4: Blak Diamond Train
5: Cities of Refuge
6: Leviathan Dub

The Backstreet Boys won the Deathpoll.
Now who's down with recording a song for a Backstreet Boys cover album for this thing? You sign up, then we divide 24 by the number of people, that's how long you'll have to record it.
Get creative, do whatever you like to the cover. Just, make sure nobody else is already doing the same song. Post if you want in, I'll edit the list into the first post. Come on, let's make something ridiculous and awesome.
