I went to see Leonard Cohen very recently and, as decent as the covers of "Hallelujah" are, his is the definitive version. And it's not even his best song! Jeez.

EDIT: At least mention Jennifer Warnes' cover of "First We Take Manhattan", which isn't perfect but is a pretty solid rendition of the song. (The video is worth watching just for the shots of M. Cohen himself.)

Iron & Wine's cover of The Postal Service's 'Such Great Heights' is excellent, TPS is good, but the averagely-good electric keyboard backing for Ben Gibbard's awesome singing leaves you somewhat disappointed.

Bono's cover of 'I am the Walrus' is pretty decent, and I love the Red Painting's cover of 'Mercy Seat'

Sam Beam's version of "Such Great Heights" is so fucking good.  Better than the original without a doubt.

Heh, glad to see the love goes on...

The Advanced Search works.  Rather than search on covers I tried "such great heights" because I knew someone would be giving love to Iron & Wine.

Looks like it's been a couple of years though, unless people have stopped raving about that song. :)

I'm shamelessly bumping this a little bit because of this:

Although I'm generally not a huge fan of covers in general, the cover of Elliott Smith's "Needle in the Hay" from the new Nadja album is really brilliant. Dark and sludgy and really sad. I think Mr. Smith would have approved.

You should hear the Boris/Merzbow version.

Van Canto (metal barbershop band) covering Iron Maiden "Fear of the dark".

PS: That is NOT a guitar in the background, thats a singer humming like an e-guitar. They work only with 1 single drummer.

Dream Theater's "A Change of Seasons" is mostly covers. The Big Medley is comprised of...let's see...

I. In the Flesh? II. Carry on Wayward Son III. Bohemian Rhapsody IV. Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin V. Cruise Control VI. Turn it On Again

Yeah, I kinda hate Dream Theater, but the Change of Seasons cover medley of The Rover/Achilles Last Stand/Song Remains the Same is pretty damn good.

Decemberists have a Heart  :-o

Just take a listen to their cover of Pink Floyd's Echoes (it's a flac audio file)

If anyone manages to out Floyd Pink Floyd, this is it.  I can honestly say I enjoy their cover more than the original!

Shameless bump for shameless cover I did.

Here is a cover of "Stars", by Hum.

edit: ok, I just listened to the original song again and there are some parts that I forgot to put in (like several measures in the bridge). Try to listen past that.

It's alright, I guess.  Certainly couldn't be as awful as The Futureheads' version, but still lacking a lot of the character of the original, IMO.

His love of Kate Bush came through loud and clear on those first couple of albums, I thought... Various vocal gestures and stuff.  Didn't he also cover 'O England, My Lionheart'?  Maybe he just raved about it in an interview.

NoFx-- Straight Edge

I did not know such a cover existed, but that's truly hilarious.
