i guess Froberg's voice is a bit of an acquired taste, but "eight kinds of fucking terrible"?!?!?!  WASH YO' MOUTH OUT SON!!!

i'm in the process of upping the new Narrows album (and I'll throw in the EP tracks too).  For those who haven't heard, they're something of a "supergroup" featuring members of These Arms are Snakes, Unbroken, Some Girls, and most importantly, DAVE FUCKING VERELLEN FROM BOTCH!!!  according to a review i read of the album today, he "still sounds like a bear trying to piss out a kidney stone the size of a child's fist," and that's about spot on.  first listen has kicked my arse.  i'll edit the link/pics etc. in here once it's uploaded.

EDIT:  ....and BOOM MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

Go for it. Hell, we've already had Yank Crime and that's not exactly typical hardcore. I say if you think it fits then post it.

I was halfway through uploading this when a search for the album cover brought up the last time I uploaded this album to the forum, and wouldn't you know it the link still works. But it's amazing and a classic so here it is again:

Fig. 4.0 - Action Image Exchange

Around the turn of the century UK hardcore was ridiculously good. I'm not sure how much international recognition bands like Canvas, HHH, Thirty Seconds Until Armageddon, Stalingrad, Stand, Army Of Flying Robots, Imbalance and Orrin De Forest got but if there's any justice it was a lot. Probably the best record to come out of this fertile period was Fig. 4.0's Action Image Exchange. It sounds a bit like Dillinger Four, What Happens Next? and Kid Dynamite all mixed up in a Leeds car park but with more time changes. It's also probably the best melodic hardcore album of all time, and yes I am including Kid Dynamite in that. In the eight years since this record came out there's never been a period when I haven't had it in regular rotation and I doubt there ever will be.

More 20th anniversary goodness.   Because 1989 was a good year.  I got my first car (an 82 Toyota).  Had a no-stress job making pizza for a cool-as-hell local restaurant.  Spent most of the summer skating.   Good times.  I also went to my second Sick of it All show (Exodus opened) one Sunday afternoon.  They were kicking off their Blood, Sweat, and no Tears tour.  Yeah, about half the songs are on their seven inch, but man... this shit was "Fresh for 89, you suckas."    What a great fucking album.

If you enjoyed Gorilla Biscuits, this is CIV's complete discography.  Without getting into a ton of dramatic history, this is basically Gorilla Biscuits, minus one guy, with just a little bit of pop thrown in.

Occasionally.

Some of the songs are still brutal, though, despite CIV getting on MTV and in video games.  Two parts because it's just a wee bit bigger (forty something songs) than 100 mbs total.

Finally, since we're now in the 90s anyway with CIV... Here's one of my favorite albums of all time.  The debut album (and a concept album at that) of Life of Agony.   I've always thought this was just a smidgen over produced (I really like raw, live sounding music) but still an incredible album.  If you want the truth, after 15 years I never listen to the spoken parts anymore, and think the back half of the album isn't quite as strong as the front... but I still love it.  Everyone should have this in their collection.

Funnily enough I'm just downloading the CIV discography and that Breakdown demo now. More would be grand, it might not be appreciated by that many but that actually seems sort of fitting for hardcore records.

So it occurred to me that maybe some of this stuff is such a staple of hardcore that everyone might already have it, but I wasn't sure.   So cool... more stuff.

1988's Hardcore classic Step On It by Boston's own Slapshot.   I only saw these guys once in about 92 but it was a fucking unbelievable show.  About 200 of D.C.s most dedicated hardcore fans crammed into an upstairs club made for about 50.  Even smaller than the Safari and the original 930.  Very intimate venue, Choke was more part of the pit than singing on stage.

I have just about everything Slapshot released... at least, their good stuff.  They got kinda iffy in the late 90s.  I could do, say... Sudden Death Overtime next if anyone wants it.  Or maybe Live at SO36 if I can find the CD in my house (the joys of having a teenager who likes my music... she steals it) to rip.   Anyway:

Please do keep uploading the old stuff, man! Some of us young'ins can do with the history lesson!

No upload because I don't have any of their stuff, but I saw Ceremony on tour with Converge a few months ago, and it was seriously the most chaotic, violent, and destructive thing I have ever witnessed. Epic hardcore.

Fine.  I'll try to throw some new (old) stuff up every day or so if it's getting a little love.   This stuff was the soundtrack to my youth, and now that I'm old and boring, I'm glad to be able to share it with a few people who appreciate it.

Alright ladies, here's another classic.

Much like Cro-Mags, everyone had their demo tape for-fucking-ever before they ever put a real album out.  And again, much like Cro-Mags, they put out a spectacular first album, and then a whole bunch of "WTF was that?  What happened to the band I loved?"   Now they're mostly a joke, but damn did they start out good.

From 1990, the self titled Biohazard

i think "harmony no harmony" is still pretty widely available on stuff like amazon.co.uk (that's where i got it, if i remember rightly), but "a song to ruin" is drastically out of print.  i actually emailed the record label and they've got no intention of re-releasing it yet.  i ripped mp3s off a mate's CD- he was savvy enough to get into the band earlier than me and bought it when it came out.  but yeah, frank's a pretty great lyricist.  i remember hearing "this air conditioned life has had me gasping for some reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaal conversation" blaring out of the TV when the "breaking the back" video first started getting airtime and thinking "well, THAT's different!"  even his simpler style in his solo stuff is still full of cool wordplay.

HOLY FUCK GUYS, IT'S THE NEW GHOST OF A THOUSAND RECORD!!!  Seriously, while everyone was wanking over the new Gallows record, their old touring mates have been busy busting out a giant-bollocked slab of punk'n'roll-ish hardcore badassery.  Seriously, this could end up being my favourite record of '09.  "Fed to the Ocean" is one of the most viciously awesome tracks I've heard in a long time.

For those who prefer lazy journalistic comparisons, think The Bronx (circa "I" and "II") and Refused having a fight with rusty knives.

Chris Colohan was seriously one of the most pissed off vocalists I've ever heard. Also, the best thing about Cursed musically is the fact that their guitarist did not use any distortion pedal or effects to get the tone that he used, he just turned the gain up on his amp and overloaded the fuck out of the signal going through the cab...and it sounds heavier than anything, ever.

I totally agree on Chris' vocals. Did you ever see them live? I saw em when they toured with From Ashes Rise and they played with equipment that looked like they threw it down the stairs and dragged it behind their car on the way to the gig... AND SOMEHOW IT WAS THE LOUDEST MOST BROOTAL SOUND I EVER EXPERIENCED LIVE.

I will miss Cursed dearly.

There are five photos of shows on this page.   I'm absolutely certain I was at three of them.

http://doublecrosswebzine.blogspot.com/2009/03/dave-brown-on-adult-crash-photo-book.html

So I just had another birthday not long ago and was reflecting on how fucking old I'm getting.  Mentally I still feel 17, but I have to realize that I'm actually staring down the barrel of 40, and it won't be much longer until I'm there.   Time. Fucking. Flies.    Anyway... this blog is a great.  This is exactly what it was like in DC 20 years ago.   (And I wanted to resurrect this thread)

This was a really strange sophomore album for them to make. I really like it. Some of the songs sound like they could be on Sonic Youth records.

On one of the few trips I make back to this forum, I find this thread? Fucking fantastic. Thanks guys.

I have plenty I could upload but no bandwidth sadly.

I recommend everyone check out;

Nine - Lights Out/Killing Angels. - The first hardcore band I ever listened to and definitely one of the most underrated in my opinion. Hard to find due to the short name but with any luck someone will have one of their albums.

Integrity - Why haven't the been mentioned already? Seasons in the size of days is a damned good album and a  must listen.  Maybe not the best, but definitely pioneering.

Doomriders may be worth checking out if you haven't already heard them. I'm beginning to find them a bit tired but that's because I've listened to them too much.

Fucked Up - The Chemistry of Common Life - Best album of 08, no contest for me. Experimental hardcore band has horrific carcrash and are merged with Sonic Youth or possibly the Pixies. All turns out well.

Also, what's the story with everyone's avatars? I don't know this band...

Their other album (2004) was called My Heroes Have Always Killed Cowboys, so I think that's a good enough reason already..
But if you like Sonic Youth, I'd say go for it!

Edited to add:  Don't be surprised by the occasional reggae-esque interludes in this album.  This was 1989 afterall, and the Bad Brains were still near the top of their game.  It shouldn't be shocking that other bands tried to emmulate them.   I mean, fuck, we used to have tons of Kirshna-Core bands for crying out loud.  It was a strange (though awesome) time.

I will be the first to admit that the sound of what's being defined as hardcore has changed a lot in the last 30 years.  Personally, I think Minor Threat sounds like the Sex Pistols played on 78 RPM.  The guys just a few years older than me who grew up buying ice cream from Henry Garfield Rollins and hanging out with Ian would tell me I don't know what hardcore is.   I get it, I'm the old fuck talking about things that at best are marginally relevant.

If you don't like where today's hardcore came from, that's fine.  Don't listen to it.   You can be pretty certain anything you ever see me post is going to be from say...  85-95 and it's going to sound a lot different than something released in the last 10-15 years.   But RATT?  Seriously, you're either just being a rude fuck or you don't know much about music.    If you don't want the history lesson, don't click on the link.

And I'm a young fuck who doesn't really get into any of the old hardcore stuff, but damn it if I don't love seeing the almost complete spectrum of hardcore represented in this thread.

I get highly annoyed with kids that look at bands like Norma Jean and think they're the most unique and original thing ever, but look at you confused when you mention Botch or Coalesce. I wax eloquent about the good old days of Pg.99/Orchid/Majority Rule. So I understand the attachment to the history of it. I say, even though I tend not to click on your links (personal preference and all), keep 'em coming!

In grade six one of my classmates during sex ed asked if the penis could be broken. The teacher's response was "Not in the same way you'd break a bone. I still wouldn't take a hammer to it or anything."

Funnily enough, the upload I made of it exactly one year ago is still up:

Racetraitor - Burn The Idol Of The White Messiah

On the subject of Underdog, just because it isn't always fast doesn't mean it isn't hardcore. It's not like there haven't been recent bands to sound somewhat like that, Justice obviously loved a bit of Underdog. The reggae always put me off them myself, but I don't like reggae anyway so that's no surprise.

Also, large amounts of yes for Judge and Amanda Woodward. My mate reckons Bringin' It Down has the best intro of any hardcore song ever and is pretty much a textbook hardcore song all the way through. It's pretty hard to disagree with him really. Fats bits, chug, "you're drinkin' and you're smokin' and you say you feel fine *insert der ner ner on guitar*"... you can't go wrong.

Yo QC! How's your edge? If you're anything like me it's been buried under the patio for ten years under a pile of booze, nicotine and ketamine, but if there was ever a record to make you wish you were still a good edger this is it. Ten Yard Fight were part of the whole '97 youth crew revival along with In My Eyes and the vastly inferior Floorpunch who can get stuffed for fucking up the singer from By The Grace Of God for no good reason. Ten Yard Fight were old school as hell and in First And Ten wrote one of the great straight edge anthems, using American football as an amazingly ridiculous metaphor for losing/keeping your edge ("You turned in your helmet, fumbled the ball. You lost the edge man you're gonna fall!"). You'll never regret breaking edge as much as when these guys are telling you how badly you sold out and how you're not going to make it to the super bowl anymore (or if you're still holding the edge down, better about still rocking it). Recommended for anyone with a shred of "hardcore pride" left.
