I reacquainted myself with an old school gem of a hardcore record over the weekend, and also bought their brand new one - so here's two Poison the Well records for the price of none!

First we have this:

Quote
Their first official full length "The Opposite Of December." Considered legendary in many circles. Containing such live staples as 'Artists Rendering Of Me,' 'Nerdy,'
and 'slice paper wrists. One of the first bands to combine breakdown-heavy hardcore with melodic singing. Hardcore fans (like myself!) too young to have enjoyed the 80's scene will remember this one fondly.

Then, released last week, we have:

Quote
Ten years, probably twice as many members later - brand new PtW full length "The Tropic Rot." They still got it...

This is just a perfect, perfect thread. I'm going to have to put OX up, as I didn't see it in any of the earlier posts.  Oh, and Introducing... by Bars. And Live the Storm by Disfear, I didn't see that either. I will also point all of you to the Deathwish Inc website, where they have some really nice samplers. The latest MMIX one is awesome.

Deathwish is hands down the best hardcore label in existence right now. Period. There's not a single band on that roster that doesn't deliver.

Also, those are all very good choices that you listed. I haven't picked up the new Coalesce record yet (payday tomorrow, fuck yes!) but the other two are solid. Bars is actually so much raw rock and roll, and Disfear is just friggin' Disfear.

Thanks. I also like Blacklisted, The Hope Conspiracy, Shai Hulud, and some mathy stuff like Botch. When I'm not listening to hardcore it's punk, metal or various combinations of the two :-P

Well, here are those albums:

I'm not going to leave these up very long, maybe a fortnight or so. Go and buy them if you like them.
*shrug* No one wanted them, oh well.

As requested by Grimbo here is the final album by Kneejerk, the band Frank Turner (Million Dead, solo) cut his teeth in. It's very patchy, as you'd expect since the band are about 18 and are clearly influenced by bands from the more experimental end of hardcore like Refused and Canvas (actually I think I might put some Canvas up next, Lost In Rock is something of a forgotten classic to my mind). Turner can't really pull off the singing parts very well and the lyrics are pretty teenage on occasion, I'll admit to wincing now and again when listening to this. For all that though there is some great moments of emo metallic hardcore, and it does have a real ramshackle charm to it.

Canvas - Lost In Rock
(Household Name, 2000)

Much like Refused, Leeds' Canvas liked to include electronics or instruments like violins and weren't afraid to mess around with what you'd expect from a hardcore band. The big difference is that Refused were never anywhere near this heavy. Canvas dealt in crushing metalcore that had been twisted and fucked with until it was morphed into sprawling, wailing epics (several songs clock in at over 5 minutes and two at over 10, impressive for a hardcore record). Imagine if Converge took a ton of drugs, listened to a shitload of prog, got themselves some electronic gubbins and relocated to West Yorkshire and you might have some idea what this record's all about. Members went on to do time in the likes of Beecher, Humanfly, Tigers, Thirty Seconds Until Armageddon and Born From Pain.

I'm guessing Andy Sutcliffe of Canvas was still in Beecher at that point, he left after not too long to focus on Humanfly with his brother John (Canvas' vocalist). Actually, you wouldn't care to throw up some Beecher would you? I never got into them back in the day, but my tastes have changed since then and I was probably too obsessed with bands like D.S.-13 and Voorhees to pay them any decent attention.

Also, listen to Canvas.

Hope you like it! I've got a few UK albums from around that era that were also doing (to me) interesting stuff with hardcore like Imbalance, Stalingrad, Humanfly (they've changed massively into a post-metal band now) etc that I can throw up if anyone's interested. A lot of them were on now-defunct labels like Armed With Anger and Hermit so probably aren't around to buy. I'm surprised the Canvas album is still kicking around!

well, the (frequently wrong) info section on amazon says that canvas album is on Metal Blade.  but if you're right and it's on household name, they're pretty good at keeping their releases in print (although they've let one of their finest, Howards Alias' "Beat Heart Beat" drop out of print recently  :-( ).  and it is obviously second hand, the one i'm buying, hence the cheapness of it.

i'm not sure if they're technically hardcore, but i might up the two eps and full-length by The Blueprint, a supergroup who were about in the first half of this decade, and featured members of earthtone9, consumed, and (i think) pitchshifter.

Interesting. I found a review for Lost In Rock that gives the release date as 2001 and the label as metal blade, so I'm guessing it got re-released since it's conspicuously absent from the Household Name store. You were right about them keeping things in print though, they're still selling Imbalance's debut, HHH's making changes (that I had no idea they'd ever re-issued, I presumed it had gone out of print after the Positive Outlook/Sakari release), Withdrawn, they've even got Hard To Swallow vinyl! And that Ensign/Fig 4.0 split where the production made it frankly unlistenable, but still.

if that's the kinda hardcore you're into, contribute some!!!  i'm not a fan of straight-edge hardcore, but i'm not gonna moan about it, i just didn't download it.  all the metalcore that's been posted is all more hardcore-orientated than metal-based.  hardcore's pretty much an umbrella term anyway - for the love of all that is good in this world, DO NOT let this thread degenerate into lame genre-debating, PLEASE.

I uploaded a couple more records to the mediafire folder I made for this thread:

Code: [Select]

The new additions are Life At The Speeds' self-titled record and Bright Calm Blue's Assymetry Set. Life At These Speeds play some pretty straight-forward, driving tunes but towards the end of the record they dial it back with a couple more sprawling numbers. Their guitar riffs get stuck in my head a lot.

Asymmetry Set is an album I think everybody should hear. They just have everything going on. Syncopated guitars and a tight-ass rhythm section that at times calls to mind early Q and Not U, really excellent spoken-shouted-screamed vocals paired with some pretty great lyrics, and keyboards! Sadly, after they released this album they kicked out the singer and went on to record a second album that was pretty much bullshit.

Hold on, all the jokes about Hot Topic imply that it sells clothes for teenagers with swooshed hair and Throwdown CDs. You mean America actually has so many crusts there is an entire chain dedicated to selling patches and vegan boots? Weird, but good I suppose since Discharge's Realities Of War is one of the best 7"es of all time, it's just raw power. I also appreciated their love for John Heartfield.

Disfear are good but I wouldn't go ranking them as the greatest d-beat band since Discharge. Japan's Bastard on the other hand make a pretty good case that they should be at the top of the pile. One of the guys from the (really good) Devoid of Faith has their excellent discography No Hope In Here up on his blog: http://truepunkmetal.blogspot.com/2009/07/bastard-no-hope-in-here-199.html

Unless you brits have a different definition of crusties. Which i doubt cause scene kids don't give a shit about veganism.

in the few punk scenes i've encountered (i'd hesitate to say "been part of" since i tended to avoid the name-dropping and one-upping and just went to see live music), i've generally found the patch-wearing, vegan-as-fuck, punker/crustier-than-thou types to be just as annoying, cliquey, image-obsessed, and elitist as the asymmetrical fringe brigade, only more violently so.  i say generally, as there have always been a few saving graces in the form of people who wear the associated clothes but aren't actually arseholes.

still, this doesn't have any bearing on whether or not the music itself is good, and i'd frankly love to hear me some discharge, as i've not heard much so far, so if anyone wants to throw some up here, that'd be awesome.

No, they play that really watered down kind of death metal. Would they be slam? Slam confuses me, I just know it involves Waking The Cadaver and various other bits of death metal I want no part of.

Oh yeah, crust punk is massively about image. I tend to find it's the younger ones that tend to be more elitist, the ones in their late 20s-early 40s are usually pretty decent sorts (even if I sometimes do get an urge to hose them down). Quite a few nice younger ones as well though, often seems arbitrary what scene attracts the tits in any given town. Mind you I probably would say that since I'm not averse to the odd patch and being a wee bit vegan as fuck myself.

I could do with more Discharge myself, I lost most of it when my old computer died and unfortunately I can't rip from vinyl to put what I have left up.

Canvas - Lost In Rock
(Household Name, 2000)

this arrived in the post t'other day, and it's pretty awesome.  total headfuck, but intriguing nonetheless!  the vocals are sometimes a bit nails-meet-blackboard, but otherwise it's pretty insane, definitely gonna get a few more spins from me very soon!

I'm kind of relieved you bought something after my gushing and didn't hate it. When I'm back at my computer I'll throw up Humanfly's fist album, it's the vocalist and one of the guitarists from Canvas (and early Beecher) doing some kind of JR Ewing screamo, but pretty much better than JR Ewing. It contains the line "here, have a riff grenade". I can imagine a few guys around these parts liking it. I know what you mean about John's vocals, he does get pretty wailing. Personally I rather like that completely off-key business, but... yeah.

On a related note, does anyone know of any really new hardcore bands that are totally fucking with the template and making you wonder if this is even hardcore? Because I could use more of that, the more political the better.

You know perfectly well that will be a reasonable compromise. Mind you, since the entirety of my knowledge of Baltimore comes from Homicide, The Wire and John Waters the concept of Baltimore screamo seems so incongruous. Also, I believe there was an unfulfilled promise of a Dawn Treader discog?

I've got that Open Up Finders, Please record by Age Sixteen and although it's good and it sometimes sounds like they're making a bit of an effort to be different with the guitar sound they're hardly breaking the screamo mould. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I love straight ahead screamo, but it is what it is.

CURSED - I

One question: Why is there a song that shouldn't be on the album right in the middle?

Yeah, I pretty much agree about Age Sixteen. It's pretty straight forward modern scremo. By no means is that a detriment. If they ever make their way to england be sure to hit up their show, its absoutely insane.

Also once I get home tomorrow night (I've been in long island since sunday morning) I'll do that Dawn Treader post! And once I do that I'll try and find all the local scremo I have to upload, or at least recommend.

ATTN ALL PUNX KIDS!

There is a track up from the new kidcrash album. http://www.myspace.com/thekidcrash Go listen to it right now!

It feels a lot lighter in tone than a lot of Kidcrash's other stuff (note i have never spun new ruins). While I felt Jokes kind of had a rip yr face off quality, this really never gets that heavy. A lot more focus on the light, mathy, fun side of kidcrash. Also, the vocals are a lot calmer since they're shouted, not screamed. Also US kids apparently we should wait to order the album.

GET STOAKED GUYS

(also dawn shredder soon i promise)
