Misery Signals - speak of the devil, consists of members from ^ 7A7P. Metal, with a fair amount of 'core, Misery Signals are definitely one of my favorite bands. Ever. I remember posting about how their most recent album was perfect (because it is) - the lyrics, the production, songwriting, the guitars/drums/bass/xylophones, the way the album 'flows' - everything. I also stated that the last two songs will give you chills (because they will). A most-definite must-listen.

OK so this is from way back but I just wanted to say that despite digging on "Mirrors" pretty hard I neglected this album, and didn't think it was anything special. I went back to it to today and holy crap, dude. Maybe I was just in the right mood for some fuckin' xbrootalxbreakxdownsx but this is killing me right now.

i've got a crapload of stuff i keep meaning to upload, and i still haven't gotten round to it (gotta hit the sack in a few mins, so it won't be tonight either, but soon, SOON i promise!!!), but in the meantime, recently splitted-uppified brit melodic hardcore tykes The Steal have made all their recordings (including songs from limited 7"s and radio sessions) available for free download on their site.

so, if yous like kid dynamite/lifetime/paint it black and that kinda thang, strap on your downloading hat, and check out http://www.thesteal.co.uk/ (downloads are on the "records" page).

I got the Doomriders record a few days ago, and it is truly wicked. So riffage. So, so riffage.

Anyway, what is up thread? It has been a while, and that is a damn tragedy. So here, have some kick ass hardcore choons.

Lewd Acts- Black Eye Blues

I actually just DL'd this album this morning and am on my first listen-through now, but I was sufficiently impressed with the stuff on the band's Myspace and the first two songs on the record to know that you guys should be hearing this.

Here is my main bro Gary Suarez with a review:

Quote
Contrasting with the unsettling amount of mind-numbing sonic uniformity dominant in today’s American hardcore scene, San Diego’s Lewd Acts offer a much needed corrective, as made so evident with Black Eye Blues, their new album for Jacob Bannon’s Deathwish Inc. imprint. Sure, the band serve up enough uptempo cuts to fuel the savagely vibrant circle pits we’ve all come to expect at hardcore shows, be they at recreation centers, dive bars, or mid-sized general admission concert venues. Yet as with labelmates Narrows, Lewd Acts infuses creative growth and artistic progression into a genre largely categorized by its ironic stagnancy.

Following the tense, sludgy, theme-defining intro of “Know Where To Go”, the fury is unleashed on “Wide Black Eyes,” a classic slice of two-minutes-or-less hardcore with all the trimmings. Rightly so, Lewd Acts front-load this album with a few more like this before throwing its first genuine sonic curveball, a slow spoken word dirge called “Who Knew The West Coast Could Be So Cold?”. Here, vocalist Tyler Densley tones down his roar for an even more unsettling rasp as he rants against a backdrop of muted drumwork and comparative clean guitar and bass. It is immediately followed by “Penmanship Sailed,” perhaps this fantastic album’s best track. Fueled by a low, crunchy and driving bassline as if ripped from some discarded B-side for Helmet’s classic ‘Meantime’ LP, this killer tune (the album’s longest) builds to a grand finish of pounding percussion and soaring riffage.

Throughout Black Eye Blues, Lewd Acts do their absolute damnedest to subtly subvert conventional hardcore with extremely well-executed tracks full of cutting melodies and immolating dissonance. The otherwise blistering “Young Lovers, Old Livers” carries a sumptuously anthemic chorus that only gets more potent on repeated listens. This is not to say that the band have gone the pop-punk route; rather, they have embraced the nonconformity of their forefathers like Black Flag while shunning the trends and metallic tendencies of their peers. As a result, Black Eye Blues more than just stands out among this year’s hardcore records; it ranks among 2009’s best overall albums.

i don't think there is a single bad band on deathwish - i just started listening to Rise and Fall's new album Our Circle Is Vicious and it is immaculate. anyone who likes deathwish hardcore (a la converge, shipwreck a.d., trap them, pulling teeth, victims, etc etc) needs to get this.

i reckon "Jupiter" and "Perfect Pitch Black" are the best two, but generally, you can't go wrong with anything they've done.  even "antenna" is awesome, despite what more-hardcore-than-thou types might tell you.

i think i upped jupiter in the mf! thread a while back, give it a search and see if it turns up mate.

  • They're talking about me of course

This thread needs more love. So here's Hour of the Wolf. Two albums and a split EP with Lewd Acts. All awesome hardcore 'n' roll. That's probably the best way to describe it.

Quote from: scenepointblank
Hour of the Wolf are one of the best punk bands in America-trust me. [...] This band channels the back-alley, fire-breathing menace of Poison Idea, mixed with a whoa'd hookiness gene-spliced from Danzig's hair follicles or even the fingernails of an hungry young A.F.I., plus just a dash of Billy Zoom's silver-flaked glitter guitar-but under duress, like he'd been kidnapped and forced to supply his Chuck Berry-isms at gunpoint. The guitars actually have a nervous, amphetamine-addled edge that almost conjures up the ghost of Drive Like Jehu. It's a potent mix. Instead of coming off like empty placeholders for something mercurial that's gone tepid, Hour of the Wolf molest some of rock and roll's stale signifiers until they actually sound dangerous again.

I saw that the other day. Sort of impressive how much they manage to get wrong in one article. Niche Homo hardly covers any hardcore at all, it's written by Stroidy not Nick Jones, since when were Broken Arm a hardcore band anyway, and they only mention three bands. Plus, someone from Mob Rules really needs to stop Conor from ever talking in an interview.

i've been meaning to post stuff in this thread for weeks now and been too lazy to actually do it, so here goes:

Strike Anywhere - "Iron Front"

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?nyf4miyzljy
For my money, it's the finest yet.  They've taken the stronger melodic sensibilities of "Dead FM" and combined them with the harder-hitting sound of their earlier records that I felt "Dead FM" was slightly lacking.  Also, just about every track is memorable, whereas previously their albums had one or two tracks that'd kinda run into one another a little.  Even more of an achievement when you consider this is a good 3 or 4 tracks longer than most of their previous output.  Solid album, and anyone who likes a bit of melodic hardcore should check it out.

Secondly, a super special three-in-one pack of awesome Dan Yemin-related hardcore funtimes!  OH FUCK YES, SON, THIS IS THE GOOD SHIT:

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?m22ndkyymlv
All in one convenient download, you get Lifetime's "Hello Bastards," (an energetic, emotional, melodic hardcore classic, and a hugely influential one at that!), Paint It Black's debut "CVA" (furious pissed off hardcore with Yemin taking on the vocals to great effect, with some awesome back-ups from Dave House, now of The Loved Ones), and the self-titled album by Armalite (a pop-punk/hardcore half-breed featuring Dan tearing it up on bass, and Atom Goren, this time without his "package" on vocals).  Enjoy!

The scene here is pretty pathetic of late, particularly when you think how many good hardcore bands we've had in previous years. Really, it all went to seed when An Owl of xJusticex split, there was just nothing to fill that void...

RESURRECTION CCCCCCCCCCCCOMBO BREAKER!

So I thought you guys should check out some New Zealand hardcore. We have a myriad of scenes going on down here but I'm more into the post-hardcore/thrashcore scene. It doesn't really have anything to do with thrash but that's what the more conventional hardcore scenesters have labelled it. Really most of these bands have more in common with 80s hardcore ala Blackflag/JLA but whatever. There's a strong Christian hardcore scene that tends to play a mix of mainstream metalcore and hatebreed styled hardcore. Pretty boring, pretty common.
Anyway!

The Wrongmen - now defunct, somewhat similar in style to Ghost of a Thousand and maybe Breecher.
http://thewrongmen.blogspot.com/ - You can download their final recording and their last 7 inch here. Both really awesome. If you're interested their full length (Den of Vipers) is available to download somewhere in here; http://ratkingzine.blogspot.com/

Speaking of Rat King, you should also check it out for other awesome NZ bands like Tentacles of Destruction, Smashing Off, Streetkunt and Workshy.
Other awesome NZ bands of note which I don't have recordings of: Short lived, Damaged, Coffee Rage, Wasteland, The Vrill, Neon Bastard, Strangers.

If you guys are interested I can probably find some more stuff/upload some of my own collection.

whoooo i am happy this thread got resurrected.

so dear hardcore thread,

i have recently re-discovered the goodness of early a.f.i.
their first couple of albums are pretty awesome poppy hardcore. the third one is just incredible in every way and i was obsessed with it when i was 13/
14.

then they fuckin' sold out and did the whole mallgoth thing which i am so not down with. i don't really listen to their "gothy" albums at all cause i find them quite dull. i don't even like black sails in the sunset that much, and apparently that is still an acceptably hardcore record.

I saw them live about a month ago and they are still AMAZING. Best albums go: Art of drowning > Sing the sorrow > Black sails > Shut your mouth > Decemberunderground > Answer that > Very proud of ya > Crash love. IMO of course. But I feel that you're horribly wrong. Their later albums are (a lot more melodramatic) more interesting than their early Filth-esque parroting. All good albums. Even Crash love is listenable.

Agreed.

Like a lot of bands AFI are the product of a balancing act between two disparate influences- in their case, Bay Area HxCx and Depeche Mode-worshipping goth-lite- and as in almost every case they started favouring one very heavily with just hints of the other, and as their career wore on the balance would shift towards the second influence more with each album. Also like almost every other case their best work was done in the middle period when the pull of both influences reached an equilibrium i.e; Art of Drowning and Sing the Sorrow. Before that they were completely unremarkable and also embarrassingly immature, afterwards they seemed to me as though they were subsuming their own natural creative impulses and trying to hard to appeal to a certain (fickle, fleeting, fashionable teenaged) demographic- never a good thing.

i have never seen em live, sadly. thus i'd have to say:

shut your mouth era > black sails era (transference is my fave song by them ever) > answer that > very proud of ya > sing the sorrow > art of drowning

haven't listened to crash love or decemerunderground that much.

Shai Hulud, they basically invented the genre. Uh. Well, after Shai Hulud you'll probably feel let down by a lot of other metalcore. If you're listening to converge and botch and you want to make it mathier (is that a word? now it is) there's Coalesce. They recently released Ox, a really great album. I could recommend a range of shitty metalcore as well, because I like it, but I doubt you would.

I'm not really sure how Coalesce are mathier than Botch, they definitely aren't on the albums pre-split. Coalesce are the plodding, Led Zeppelin obsessed ones. And saying Shai Hulud invented metalcore is more than a bit misleading since they apparently formed in the mid-'90s which means Integrity, Earth Crisis, Rorschach and Converge all predate Shai Hulud by about 5 or 6 years and quite a lot of other bands were already active or forming at the same time.

Sean, get yourself some old Integrity, like Humanity Is The Devil. Forget Earth Crisis, a few fun songs but you can comfortably skip them. Chokehold are absolutely essential, you need Content With Dying but be warned, it's really sloppy and rough edged. Totally worth it though. Deadguy are a good idea too, get hold of Fixation On A Coworker. Oh, and Rorschach, this is very important. Basically, after Void went shit and split the intensity level dropped significantly in hardcore. We had to wait until Rorschach for things to get fucked up again. Get Autopsy, that's the discog. Finishes on the best cover of My War you'll ever hear. You're also going to need The Swarm aka Knee Deep In The Dead's brilliant Parasitic Skies. You know Cursed right? Well before Cursed there was The Swarm, and they make Cursed sound like a damn pop-punk band. Fucking Invincible At One A.M. is downright fucking feral and will eat your face for not being nailed thoroughly enough to the X. Unbroken aren't strictly metalcore but they're very important to the whole thing, and besides, it's fucking Unbroken so you need it. From the UK check Canvas for the weird shit, Thirty Seconds Until Armageddon for Drone and Lost being two of the best mosh songs ever and Stand for being excessively reasonable but with awesome riffs. I say fuck Slavearc, hardline bollocks, and XCanaanX were dogshit too no matter what anyone says.

Oh, and are you already up on the whole kinda screamo/metalcore/crust type thing from Bremen? Because if not, dude. Acme, Mörser, Systral, Carol, Acheborn... Awesome bands. Oh, and we need to talk about Belgium. Metalcore is one of the only genres in existence where Belgium is a big deal. You're going to need a bit of early Congress and Liar, and fuck it, Arkangel. Yeah it's basically one riff all the way through Dead Man Walking but y'know, the chug is good and they're named after an animal liberation magazine so who cares.

So remember these things: Germans and Canadians outbr00dal most people and are more interested in politics than the edge, the British are weird, Belgians are all militant vegan edge and call their labels things like Sober Mind and Good Life and the Americans are somewhere in the middle of it all.

  • They're talking about me of course

Shai Hulud did the whole melodic thing though, I haven't heard much early Converge so I can't really comment. As I said, I like a lot of the crap metalcore so my opinion isn't exactly the best.

You're right though, Converge were more melodic in their early years than they were on Jane Doe but that's not exactly saying much. Shai Hulud definitely kept to a more traditional hardcore format but upped the metal which put them apart from the more brutal Cleveland style of bands like Integrity and Ringworm or early Converge and Rorschach who both had a somewhat emo-inflection in their vocals at least, so it's not like they were just aping the earlier metalcore bands.

hey guys so i have been spinning a bunch of metalcore lately (converge, botch, 7 Angels 7 Plagues) but i know jack shit about metalcore.

what are good bands that don't spend the entire time whining about god on major labels with bad haircuts?

End This Day and Coma Eternal, along with 7 Angels 7 Plagues, make up pretty much everything I ever (really) gave a shit about in metalcore.  Like, there are a ton of other decent bands,  but at this point, I really feel like these are the ones worth knowing.  7a7p and EtD pretty much made midwest metalcore.  Uploading to mediafire now, will post later.
