Hey, sorry if this is particularly dumb, but the phrase came up in the Terrible Covers Thread, and I read it enough online, but I was just wondering... well, what I just wrote in the topic, I guess.

Mainly I just don't get what the phrase means, but having been an English teacher I tend to think examples are clearer than definitions.  Please tell me about someone you know who does this mysterious thing.  What is it they do?  Do they praise stuff with one group of people, then admit later they don't really like it?  Do they say they listen to some artist because they're so bad it's funny?  What?

Liking something ironically is essentially hipsterfag for "I could never admit to liking this even though I do". It's essentially for when Patrick wants to listen to Manowar.

Pretty much this. The faux-ironic "love" of shitty things is one of the great cultural diseases of early 21st-century Western society.

I can't think of anything I actually like ironic

There's just terrible music I listen to (Savage Gardens, Madonna, etc.) that I don't let other people know I listen to.

So, for example, I have Neil Young's LP 'Trans' and it's all Canadian-hippie-tries-to-do-Kraftwerk's-'Computer-World' and it's pretty fucking awful.  But I keep it and sometimes I put it on and am like "oh shit" and laugh at it.  Sometimes when I have friends over, even.  Is that liking 'Trans' ironically?  What's shitty about doing that?  Does there have to be an element of trying to look cool in there?

I'm with fish across face. I listen to bad music for a laugh and I am unashamed of this. I know that I have lavished praise on bands for being mind-boggling and fantastically bad, and derive enjoyment from the music of such artists.  What's the problem?

Oh hang on, we've got two versions going on...

1. Saying you like something because you think it sucks  (Inlander's take?)

and

2. Saying you like something because you think it sucks when you actually think it rules  (MadAssAlex and iamiam?)

Is no. 2 the annoying thing?  Because, well, that does sound annoying, inasmuch as it's not very straight up and does smack of being a pussy ... but hard to spot?  Again, real life examples anyone?

This bothers me, I have (seemingly?) intelligent friends that watch Gossip Girl with a faux earnestness that makes me more than a little grumpy. I think mainstream rap has been in this place for the Pitchfork crowd for awhile. When they DJ, they play Chris Cornell/Timbaland collaborations surrounded by Times New Viking songs.

I'm about ready to wash my ears and eyes out with acid.

They fake genuinely liking it. That is what I meant by faux earnestness. There is artifice surrounding their enjoyment of it.

It isn't like cultural slumming (like how I used to enjoy professional wrestling).

I think that there should be a comma.

As I've been thinking of this topic, I think there has been a dropped comma. It shouldn't be, "I like this ironically," but "I like this, ironically."

I like lots of terrible horribly awful stuff, whether it is clothing or music or childish cartoons.  I do not like any of it ironically, I just like it.  I am confident enough in myself that I do not really care what other people think of my tastes.

People who like things "ironically" are just pansies who do not want to admit to having guilty pleasures.  Actually, even the world "guilty pleasure" bothers me.  Why be guilty about your pleasures?

Bingo.  Sometimes something that is qualitatively terrible can be tremendously fascinating.  Plan 9 from Outer Space, for example---completely inept film, but I'd rather watch it than a dozen competently put-together rom-coms, because its very ineptness means that it's more surprising than a by-the-numbers movie.  I like music/films/art/whatever that show me things I haven't seen before, and sometimes that newness comes out of an absolute failure to achieve anything resembling competence or good taste.

If you like something, you should be able to express what makes you *enjoy* it in a rational manner.  Not "I like it ironically" or "It's so bad it's good."  Something about it *positively* appeals to you, and if you can't cop to it then you're not being true to your own taste.

I completely agree with this sentiment although I think media that is viewed in this way should be given a different aesthetic to comparison than "good taste" or "competence."  If something draws you as a result of its failure in the mainstream sense then it shouldn't even be compared in the same way.

Serious is cool now, which is why I started watching professional wrestling again.

I know this is gonna sound weird, but I still am not sure what liking something ironically means. Maybe I'm bad at being a hipster douche, but I still don't get it...If you like something that's cheesy, isn't that you just recognizing it has some sort of pop appeal? Someone explain this to me in a way that hasn't been spouted before...and try to remember who I am.

It is a really ridiculous concept, mostly because everyone has their own definition of it. I know people who say they like Army of Darkness ironically but they consider it in their top ten films of all time. Mostly it is bullshit. I remember that Nothing Nice to Say guest strip Jeph drew for Mitch Clem that basically sums it up. Irony is just something hipster douchebags use to look cool, but it rarely works.

Um, hence the whole point of me starting the thread.  No one's been able to answer really, closest so far is P-Frank essentially saying it's when you know what your friends really think better than they do.

I had a hunch it was like "politically correct" and, well, "hipster" - phrases that point to some kind of tendency, are always used as a negative, and are impossible to pin down when you try to get someone to define it.  That's why I was trying to push for real life examples...

Co-workers who hate 80's films...but enjoy the Breakfast Club, ironically. A sister-in-law who hates the thought of "gender stereotyping" her kids...and yet, ironically, buys the boys cap guns and the girls barbies. She says it's that she is nostalgic for the toys her and her siblings grew up with.

I know plenty of people who love to hate on Michael Jackson and yet they know all the words AND dance moves to Thriller...which they will bust out in almost every party.

Those examples seemed to fit the question, and although this post was first created two years ago...I just felt the urge to reply.

It's a coward hiding his guilty pleasure.

saying you like something ironically is just a stupid way of making yourself look cooler to your imaginary friends.

that said, what about bands like Trans Am or The Fucking Champs?  their entire careers are based on the notion that they're winking at the audience.  if you like them, does that mean you like them ironically BY DEFAULT?

this is right on the money, couldn't have put it better myself.

as a sidenote, i remember reading an interview with a dude from a band i wasn't really into (i *think* it was the guy from hatebreed if memory serves) who, when asked what his guilty pleasure was, replied something to the effect of "music to me is like food - you wouldn't be ashamed to admit you like onions, or pancakes or whatever, so why feel like that about an artist or song?"  i've always thought that was a pretty profound way to sum it up, definitely a far more level-headed viewpoint than i'd expected from a tough-guy-hardcore band member!  i've pretty much adopted that way of thinking about music since then.

Yeah I know some people like that, myself included... Best example right now: The latest Morbid Angel.

It's so bad it's good... I can't believe I'm having this much fun seeing how so many people are tearing their ears off because of this album (specially those who preordered the deluxe box, suckers!)

I wasn't really around when epic fails like St anger or the latest criptosy... But this.. This is special, I like it because I'm feeling like I' part of the history of metal.

"Yes my dear grandsons... when I was in my late teens Morbid Angel was good.... but I saw it boys... I saw that day when everything turned to epic shit! It was... almost beautiful how the hardcore fans got trolled the shit out of them... beautiful indeed. A day to remember..."

Here's what it means to like something ironically:

You love greek food.  One might assume you must like olives.  If you in fact do not like olives you might tell people that you hate olives...but only ironically, (since you love Greek food).  You would say this so that others will not make untrue assumptions about you (i.e. that you don't like Greek food on the basis you don't like olives)

Or, you love McDonald's Big Macs, but otherwise dislike McDonald's food, their business model, or fast food in general.  If someone found out you like bigmacs, you might tell them you like them ironically.  It allows you to keep you broader views or likes/dislikes in tact, emphasizing this fondness for bigmacs is the exception rather than the rule.  Like the olive example, you might say you like them ironically so that people don't make untrue assumptions about you (i.e. that you are not a healthy person, that you buy-into globalization, etc. etc.)

Because you like something ironically does not necessarily mean you are ashamed or embarrassed about it (olive example), but it can certainly happen that way.

When it comes to bands and music, one might say they like a band, or a particular song by a band, but only ironically because they generally do not like, say, the genre of the band as a whole, but like the band anyway.  They might say they like that band ironically, to keep their views (likely negative) about that genre or band in tact or save face.  You might also say you like a band ironically if you know the person you are talking to has strong negative views about the band or genre to highlight it is an exception.

Typically, you are more likely to say that you like something ironically if it is more than just the genre you dislike, but what the genre represents.  For example, if you are against pre-fabricated bands or music produced solely because it what sells because you believe that it is not true art, but you like, say Nickleback, you might say you like them ironically to ensure people do no think you support that way of making music.

Because it is cool to like "ture art", and not so cool to like prefab formulaic music, one might say they like Nickleback ironically when infact they like a bunch of differnet bands or music that is made that way.

Hipsters, on the other hand, do not like or care about anything.  If they like or care about anything at all, they will say they do so ironically, so as to ensure that one does not think that there is actually anything in this world that else this person likes or cares about.  However, hipsters think it's cool to be ironic, meaning they care about being ironic, which in fact is ironic in itself.  As a result, hipsters may say they like something that they actually don't like just to seem ironic.  Ironic, huh?

Hope that helps.
