A Republic far, far Away.
« on: 23 Jun 2009, 00:45 »

I've been playing MMO's since I was pretty young, 5th grade or so, and I have to agree that the three pillars of MMO's have been: Grind levels, Get Gear, and Meet people

Years later we're starting to realize that addiction to the grind has been great and all, but don't we deserve more?

I haven't seen a topic on it yet so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Star Wars: The Old Republic.

A new project by Bioware: who has put out fantastic Role Playing games is now delving into the area of Massively Online Role Playing games.

But rather then try to compete with World of Warcraft on the same three platforms I mentioned above, Bioware wants to move into a realm we rarely see in MMOs (at least in my experience) which is meet players on a personal level of their character and story.

I for one am interested, but not beyond a personal hope that ANYONE will beat out Blizzard's god damn abomination. As much as I hate WoW, I keep going back because no one has done anything better.

This game was announced quite a while back, a long, long time before E3, but the footage you can get from the gameplay says it all.

It's got the solid gameplay the original KOTOR had. Extensive vacting for almost everything in the game, pretty impressive for something this big. Story sounds quite important, too.

This is probably going to be a mile higher than Galaxies.

Galaxies was fucking awesome until it was nerfed to make it more streamlined. You could be a fucking space-bartender.

Leaning on your bar, running a filthy rag along the rim of an equally filthy glass and listening to some insect-faced son of a nerf-herder complain about how his brood all hatched and ate his wife.

My credits almost gone, I shamble into the filthiest dive bar on Kashyyk. I put my blaster in the basket and throw my cloak on the pile. The bartender grunts a greeting and goes back to wiping down the cracked and warped bar desk. The other patrons are too interested in the bottoms of their glasses to notice a disheveled human like myself. The last few days have been a nightmare. My ship was boarded, my partner was the victim of a lucky shot by an Imperial stormtrooper. I have nothing left. There is an empty seat at the end of the bar, so I sit down and order a shot. The bartender pours it and starts the same boring story I have heard from bartenders across the galaxy; "You know, I have a daughter out there..."

Look at this punk. I'm trying to take some time for myself and this little shaved wookie comes stumbling through here kicking up dust and asking for trouble. As if his kind haven't given me enough trouble already. I've been trying to get my name cleared in the local courts for weeks. But those blasted human justices don't see no reason to hurry things along for the likes of me. Not without a few credits to grease the wheels. Credits I ain't got. It's the likes of him they take their time doting over, always ruling in favor of. It's bloody nepotism by species is what it is. Why I'd be doing this planet nothing but a favor if I just slipped over there and wiped that little... *grunt* Of course the bartender's givin me that look. The one that says he knows exactly the difference between my tab and the credits in my pocket. Used to be times got tough, you could always count on a good fight around these parts to let off steam. Now it's as uptight as anywhere else on this godless rock.

I've been playing in the house band of this stinking dive for longer than I can remember. I was young when I started, I know that. The filthy bartender had just sold his shuttle and got me on retainer for enough credits to keep me living, but not much more than that. Oh, the follies of youth. I rumble out a song on a decades-old keyboard, trying to remember the name of the song. Not that it matters, the scum in this bar would be hard pressed to name themselves, let alone a tune I picked up from a club on the other end of Kashyyk. Anyway, as I stumble across a particularly complex passage, a kid walks through the doors and takes a seat at the bar. He doesn't even notice the other customers eyeing him. The kid dropped his blaster at the door, but he might have another on him. Even from across the room, over the music I can tell the bartender is starting in with his same old story. Yeah, he's gonna get out someday. Just like me. Just like every hostile scoundrel in the place. I see one of those scoundrels giving the new kid quite the look. Nights like this, I'm glad I've got a blast shield around the stage.

*Sigh* I hear the first strains of that filthy musician from daddy's bar downstairs and turn up the volume on my holodeck. Not that he's any dirtier than the rest of the place, but still... uck. Daddy spends all his time down there, pouring drinks at all hours for those people. It's like all he cares about is work. He doesn't realize all the amazing things that are out there. But I do. And I'm gonna go see 'em. I'll be damned if I'm getting stuck on this filthy planet, with all these low-lifes. I stand up and stretch, then walk to the window. Down the street in the falling gloom I can see a light shining from Jace's window. Jace... ugh. I remember when I thought he was soooooo cute. But lately he's just become another of the lowlifes in these parts, spending half his time in daddy's bar with the rest of them. He doesn't understand either. As I stand at the window, I notice an unfamiliar shape trudging up the street. Who is this newcomer? New faces are pretty rare around here. And faces as cute as this one are certainly rarer... He pushes the door open to walk into the bar, and I lick my lips as thoughts begin to bubble to my mind.

Anyone remember this tune? Also fuck I miss old Galaxies. I mean, the grind for anything was hell, but it was the first MMO I really got into and I spent a lot of time with my friends building our own little space community.

A few things I'm apprehensive about:

1) Morality in an mmo that affects gameplay (?) or outcomes. Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation said it best that morality system in current games are polar. Save Child or Each Child's Brains. While some games do a good job of allowing you to just PICK the dialog choice that fits your character you're playing (Mass Effect)... we're talking about... You know,  Sith and Jedi here. Is there really much choice you can make as a Sith if you plan on BEING a Sith?

I guess the big thing is that we don't know much about how the game, the content, or the way the mechanics will work... but that doesn't stop me from worrying that'll turn out poorly.

2) Raiding.... I really hope this game isn't about end game raiding.... Let me paint a picture for you... Giant Rancor boss.... Trooper tanking, Jedi dps'ing, and another Jedi healing....

I really hope the game will evolve past the whole tank ---- Healer ----- dps ----- execute strategy from website type gameplay that we have in WoW.

Can anyone maybe relay what Galaxies was like when you approached level cap? Or what it was like in terms of what kept you logging on?

3) I really hope it isn't going to be an mmorpg like Guild Wars is an mmorpg. Where the only massive part about the game is the towns where you group up. I really hope we have a dynamic galaxy to play around in.

Any thoughts?

The original Galaxies build didn't have levels, it was a skill-based system. You leveled up skills in a base class, then there were certain prereqs for advanced classes. Man do I miss Creature Handler.

You can be surprised to see how much roughly 30 years of Expanded Universe lore can flesh out shades of good and evil. But it's a valid point. For instance, KOTOR was pretty damn binary.

I find that I can get by some Star Wars RPG titles without worrying very much about numbers. As for raid bosses, I'm sure they'll be more epic than anything else on the market.

Like Boro said for skill-based system, I'm hoping some of that gets into TOR.

The hell? I could've sworn someone just thought about me. Maybe I should head on over to the bar down the street, see if Kyree is up in her room, hell, she wouldn't want to see me anyways, I'd probably just end up downstairs in the bar getting drunk off my ass and starting a fight with some new guy. Maybe that's what's best for the likes a me? Hell, I ain't gettin nowhere else on this godfersaken planet. I swear I'll get outta here someday.

Bioware have been making quite a big deal about this. They never stop going on about "Being in the Republic doesn't make you a good guy. Being in the Empire doesn't make you a bad guy" type stuff. At this point in time, it's actually possible to sympathise with the position the Sith are in.

Darke you really sympathize with the Sith? You need to talk about this, I'm really curious how you can feel that way when a bunch of people come to a place, press it's hand against it side until it's about to keel over, and then goes "Hey.... alright.. Sorry about that... let's make a truce... Yeaaah... I know it's totally in our favor but we owned you.. Amirite?"

While I think I see where Bioware is coming from for certain about the whole grey lines everywhere.... I think it's kinda hard to really say anything considering what happens in episode I-IV.

I mean for CERTAIN it's been proven that people who adhere to the Dark Side can be REDEEMED. Also that you can be a GOOD smuggler... Or at the very least you don't have to be evil to be a smuggler. You don't go around thinking, "Mwahhaa, when I bring the spice to this planet that doesn't allow spice, everyone should DIE. You see, because it's poisoned spice. It kills people. Mwaahhaa."

But I also know that the morality system can't put you in different factions... for example. A Sith can be morally good, but that won't change what faction he's on. He can't deflect, mainly because it'd be hard on a mmo where everyone is changing sides frequently depending on their choices. So the limitation there is on two things: (1) that people would take advantage of a system that allowed you to change sides easily and (2) human choice in the game is only as good as the choices presented with us.

I'm sure the game will be expansive enough to give us a near-inexhaustible list of options of morality. And it would also depend on how easily you could switch sides.

I never said I sympathise, I said it's possible.

If, however, I was playing a Sith and, for RP purposes, wanted my character to still be "good", I would be completely adamant that the Jedi annihilated my people, forcing us to near-exctinction, and would no doubt do it again if we gave them but a chance.

Agree, disagree, whatever. Star Wars lore means very little to me, hence my plan to be a no-loyalties Bounty Hounter. The Empire has my credits, yo. (In regards to switching sides, I would quite like this to be an option. If I'm a supremely powerful Bounty Hounter and some mega-rich Republic officer or whatever wants to hire me... I want it to be possible.)

Forgive the mega comma splicing.

That was another cool thing about original Galaxies, factions weren't set at all, you could join one side, the other, or ignore the war completely.

The hell? I could've sworn someone just thought about me

Well, to be fair man, you do have a pretty star Wars-y name... uh... I mean

bleep bleep, bleep bleep I am CM-209, cleaning and maintenance droid. I am employed by master to keep the bar clean and sanitary.

At least, that is what "master" thinks I am programmed to do. He found me, lying out there on the streets, looking for all the world like just another junked-out droid, just another piece of flotsam gravitating to his place, like everything else in here... customers included. Oh yes, he gets all kinds in here. It must be the permanently-shuttered windows and the pervading dampness that infests this place, that keeps it rank and pest-infected despite my (albeit cursory) efforts to fight them back. We get all kinds in here.

Of course I wasn't just some other piece of flotsam, and I'm not just a cleaning droid. We get all kinds in here, including spies.

But I'm only looking for one kind.

The kind that just walked through our squeaky door.

Sorry about that Darke. I misread (obviously) the end of your post.

That was another cool thing about original Galaxies, factions weren't set at all, you could join one side, the other, or ignore the war completely.

Now that IS cool. If they could bring anything from Galaxies, that'd definitely bring the freedom. Boro, do you know how receptive people were to that system of allegiance?

I seem to recall that multiple devs from the original SWG build's team that jumped ship a while back are involved with Bioware these days, so it's possible that TOR might have some heavy SWG influence.

I was very much under this impression as well. In fact in a few of the developer videos I thought many people from Lucas Arts stated they learned a lot from Galaxies and wanted to move forward on that. Though I could be completely wrong.
