1) currently eating homemade naan. thanks one of my friends
2) last night i made JC Blue Label Blend Burgers. that means i had my butcher grind up a secret ratio of brisket, sirloin and short rib, divided the meat into 1/3lb patties, and drizzled butter on top of them while griddling. i served them on homemade brioche with hand-cut french fries tossed in basil and truffle oil. that's how you eat a fucking burger let me goddamn tell you

For dinner tonight:

Roasted duck with a garlic port glaze.
Pate on whole wheat sourdough.
Broccoli with black olives.
Sauteed Brussels sprouts with chanterelles, shallots, and garlic.
A fat wedge of gorgonzola.

Uhnnnn. Na na na na

I'm eating a sourdough roll I bought from my local supermarket for 60c (Australian). It's actually surprisingly tasty. I guess that's what comes of living in a thoroughly middle-class inner-city suburb.

(Good bread doesn't need anything on it, it's a meal in itself.)

Might not need anything on it but a nice, crumbly cheddar would probably go really well with that.

Not sure what I'm having dinner tonight but I bet it will involve either chicken or ground beef.

Certainly, but I'm trying to make the point that too often people dismiss bread as just a method of packaging and delivering tasty food items when in fact good bread is a tasty food item all on its own, and one which I frequently enjoy eating all by itself.

I just baked banana bread!

I live on the 2nd floor of our house whilst the kitchen is in the basement, as far away as it is possible to be whilst still being in the house. I was enjoying the smells wafting up of fresh baking banana sweetness and thought I might go check on it, even though it wasn't due out for 7 minutes at least, probably more because I hadn't preheated properly. As I trundled down the stairs the sweet banana smell became slightly more sour and by the time I got to the ground floor I was jogging. On the stairs to the basement I was running because all I could smell was my delicious bread burning. I pelted to the oven and switched it off and pulled the door open in a quick movement. I grabbed a teatowel and yanked the pan out of the oven and banged it on the stovetop. The top of the banana bread was slighty dark. Will it be all right, I wondered, already planning the worst from what my wrinkled-up nose was telling me. Despite the instructions of the recipe to keep the bread in its tin until it cooled slightly, I grabbed both sides of my baking paper and threw the bread onto a cooling rack. Stripped the loaf of its modest coverings. The entire base of the bread was burned black. Still, I was going to save it. With teatowel (stripy green print) wrapped around one hand and a bread knife (green-handled) in the other, I whacked the sides and bottom from my loaf. Despite everything it was cooked perfectly, and wonderfully moist inside. I nibbled a bit of crumb. Still tasty!
Currently she is resting on her cooling rack, waiting for the time when I can prise a warm slice from her and slather it in butter. There may be slightly less of it than I intended, and no delicious chewy crust, but I consider it a success all the same.

How is it that either ingredient delivers the tastes on their own but incorporated they suck ass?
Custard on a ring doughnut however would be all kinds of rather delicous.

Brodogg I don't even know. Stephen and Kat suggested that it was tasty, so I had it. I guess it has different meat in it compared to a red hot dog.

The photo really does not do this beautifully grilled Santa Maria-style tri-tip any justice whatsoever. I spiced and grilled this thing (and 5 others!) yesterday for dinner for my 'rents and I. I also made a big ol' salad (mushrooms, tomatoes, and red onions with romaine and a homemade Italian dressing, which was also my own doing) and some exceptional garlic bread.

This cooking shit ain't so rough I don't think

I had breakfast today for the first time in a while, and I tried something different than the usual pancakes. I took some toasts and put them in a pan to grill them. After that, I spread some nutella and poured a bit of sweetened condensed milk on it. It was so awesome.

That does sound pretty good, and the steak doesn't look very good, but I am glad that I eat meat. It's already really difficult to get as much protein as I should have without using any powders, it would be even tougher without meat.

Not that much of it. I am trying to get at least 160 grams of protein per day, peanut butter starts to get boring after a while. Tuna is nice, a small can has about 50 grams in it. I can usually eat a can's worth of tuna salad in one long sitting. Wouldn't want to make a habit of it, though.

That tart looks absolutely delicious. So very rich, but so very delicious.

Have you considered drinking a protein shake? You just mix the powder with water and it tastes kinda like a milkshake. If you're feeling adventurous you can toss it into a blender with some ice and fruit.

A big jug like this will cost maybe $15 at walmart and last you at least 1 month, and you can get most of your daily protein requirement from it.

I'm thinking this means either the dude is already using powder or has his reasons for not using them

That's actually what I mean to do, when I get around to buying some. Might actually be that exact kind, I've heard the ON whey double chocolate (what does double chocolate mean, anyway? How can it be more chocolate than chocolate?) is almost as good as chocolate milk, and it is 80% protein. I had been on the fence about it earlier in this thread, and then I read that as a rule of thumb you are supposed to get at least a gram of protein per pound of body weight if you are trying to gain muscle, so I'm definitely getting some of that. 48 grams of protein per 16 ounce glass plus 16 grams of protein from 16 ounces of whole milk means an easy 64 grams of protein. The ON stuff is more expensive, the cheapest by volume I've seen is $35 for the 5-pound jug, but if it doesn't taste like shit and it means I don't have to stress about food so much, it's worth it. Especially since my parents are paying for it.

I'm doing one by a guy called Alfalfa on the SA health forum, the hardgainer 2-day split. Works well because I'm also doing the couch to 5k three days a week, parkour once a week, and letting my aching tired body recover one day a week. Theoretically, it looks like this:

Quote
Day One:

Bench Press: 3x6-8
Incline BB/DB Press: 2x10-12
Military Press: 3x6-8
DB Skull Crushers or Close Grip Bench Press with 4-5” ROM (Not all the way down to your chest and your index fingers should be where the knurling starts): 3x10-12
Kneeling Cable Crunches or Other Heavy Ab Exercise: 3x10

Day Two:

Pull-Ups or Wide Lat Pull-Downs: 3xAMAP (As Many As Possible – Use Minimum ¾ Your BW for Pull-Downs
Bent Over Yates Row 3 x 8 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNxZmvOdl5Q
EZ-Bar Curl: 2 x 10
Squats: 2 x 10
Deadlifts: 1 x 10

In practice, I'm still trying to find a gym I like, so I'm using the home gym my father bought almost a decade ago. That means I am limited to just the bench press, cable crunches, pull-downs, and row. I'm visiting a gym that I've heard is pretty good this week, so with any luck I'll be able to get the full thing going. I'm already seeing real strength differences even with the limited equipment, though.

Before anyone jumps on me for being a gross bodybuilder again, I'm around 6'2" and weigh 160 pounds. I'm trying to stop being scrawny, trying to be in something resembling good shape, not be a muscleman.

You and I have opposite goals. I started at 6'0'' 245 lbs, and have worked my way down to 200ish, but it took me 2 years to do so. I do a 4-5 day a week work out with day 1 being quads/calves, day 2 chest, triceps, forearms, day 3 lower back, biceps, day 4 upper back, shoulders, day 5 (if i make it) abs. I do between 7 and 10 different exercises per day and try to hit 3 sets of 12 before moving up in weight.  Mix that in with 2-3 days of soccer a week and I am really tired all the time.

Since I'm not going for muscle gain, I don't really monitor my protein intake. I do still drink the shake out of superstition hoping that it'll help my muscles not be sore the next day.  Really my only goal is to not look embarrassing in a swimsuit/speedo when I go on my honeymoon in May. I have 2 months left to get everything nice and tight.

Now, back to the point of the thread. We're about to grill some pork chops AND make roasted lamb. We're eatin' good tonight

Linds, I want those cookies so much. I don't think we're going to be having any this year, what with the rest of my family trying to cut added sugar out of their diet. Normally we get several boxes and they are gone in no time. So delicious.

I'm about to make a sandwich. Pastrami, sharp cheddar, whole wheat bread, brown mustard and mayo. Finishing the last of my sweet tea from lunch as well.

There are awesome tasting non-meat proteins too! Seitan is made from wheat gluten and has crazy protein levels. You can also get TVP in bags by Bobs Red Mill (probably right next to the gluten) that has good protein and can be used like ground beef minus the heart-wrenching CAFO factor:)

I just finished a fine meal of:  corned beef, bacon, cabbage, potatoes, turnips, onions, carrots, Irish soda bread, and Guinness.  Delicious.

And meals like this are one of the reasons that I am of the portly persuasion.

And I am finishing this off with a glass of red wine.

Rye is a hearty grain for people who live in cold places. It is big beans in Russia, Canada, and Northern Germany for example, with Germans probably making the best use of it. If you have ever had pumpernickel, that is a rye bread, but I take serious issue with a lot of store-bought pumpernickel; they put way too much fuckin' caraway seeds in it to cover up the fact that it's just wonderbread-style junk dyed brown, and then it tastes like garbage and I am upset because pumpernickel should be delicious.

It was kind of spring-like out and that's close enough to summer for me!

-endive, celery & strawberry salad
-rice pilaf (but it didn't turn out right! fuck you back of the safeway long grain rice bag your directions are for shit)
-grilled marinated chicken (maple, apple & beer store-bought marinade) with fresh mango-peach salsa

Most of this shit I bought on sale somehow! Hell yeah!

You're not missing out much by not having Rye bread. It's a food that can only really be appreciated with the accompaniments of ersatz coffee and Stalinism.
