I seriously thought that this was a joke, a prank, something horrible that really could not happen.  But wikipedia says it's so and with a convincingly large amount of information.
I hate family guy enough as it is and American Dad is pretty much just the same but with a few different characters.  Seth MacFarlane, isn't 2 painfully unfunny shows enough for you?  I hope this crashes and burns.  Painfully.

I really like Family Guy - though the last season was just generally a bit of a miss - and I like American Dad too, which only seems to be getting better as it goes along... but yeah, I can't see this succeeding in any way shape or form. Spin-offs like this, as far as I've seen, never seem to get the uptake the network or creators seem to be expecting, and from one of - in my opinion - the most uninteresting characters on the show?

I mean of all the supporting cast, why Cleveland? I can't imagine getting more than a couple of cheap laughs out of maybe Quagmire or Joe if they had their own show before that got boring, but I can't see any way at all they could keep the Cleveland character as he is and have this be a hit.

OK, so it's true that Family Guy is inane and largely idiotic slapstick and bathroom humor but I still love it a lot. I like it for what it is and such. But this....this spin-off is an awful idea. Cleavland is a pretty useless character. He's boring and never seems to have much of a role in anything. I have no desire to see more of him in any capacity. He makes an OK, if somewhat pointless, side character on Family Guy but I just don't see how his character can translate into something more. I mean, this show basically looks the same as Family Guy character-wise: the fat, probably nerdy son, the funny, weird little baby and the daughter who here looks kinda diva-ish instead of Meg's looserishness. The point is, it seems like MacFarlane and co. took Family Guy caricatures and made them black. And that was it. Also, since when does Cleavland have kids? I mean, couldn't they just have made a new character up? Why did they take Cleavland and change him. It doesn't make any sense. Is Peter going to be a bit character on this show or did Cleavland move and remarry and somehow have a teenage daughter without aging? It makes no sense!
Argh.

tl;dr this is going to suck

edit: I watched the trailer. Guess that answers some of my questions. It's still gonna suck though.

I remember high school when I would hear from about 5 different people "OMG, Did you see that Family Guy episode where.......?"  and then about 2 of those kids started saying "Hey, did you see that episode of American Dad where..............?"  The only time I'm actually able to sit through the show is when I'm sitting on the couch playing my DS or PSP and it's going on in the background.  I'm actually kind of glad I don't have cable anymore, one of the fine points of being a student.

And aren't all Family Guy jokes "remember that time?" Or am I forgetting the incredibly unfunny things that Stewie says?

Family Guy is one of those shows I feel bad for leaving my TV on when I'm doing something else, including sleeping. I don't want to give Seth MacFarlane any more money than he would normally get.

Wow, congratulations. I actually think you're the first person to make a joke like that to me in a good 3-4 years.  I'd give you a medal but I don't think you get one for mediocrity.

And can someone explain to me how this isn't just Family Guy but with different looking characters?

No, see, it's not. That might actually be funny. Shows have succeeded on that premise since the dawn of humor and been good. That's not Family Guy.

Family Guy is just referencing something and waiting for the audience to laugh because they understood that something was references.

You are right. But, honsetly, I enjoy referential humor. I loved that Powerpuff Girls episode where they use Beatles references.  Family Guy uses them too much, yes, but I still enjoy watching it.

I'm not sure. Granted, the funniest thing I can think of seeing on Family Guy was where Peter finds the video tape from The Ring. but that was more the combination of his expression at the end than the reference itself.

Shortly after that is the dare to drink eight cases of ipecac which isn't a reference to anything (as far as I know), but is just your basic 'gross out' humour at work I guess.

A lot of the referential humor for me is a miss, perhaps because a lot of it seems to be 80's based (which I can barely remember, being as I was born in that decade), I don't know. Most of the gags I enjoy aren't referential, at any rate... though I'd never go as far as to suggest it's top quality AAA comedy writing.

I could be the minority, though... I'm pretty easily amused for the most part anyway, to the extent where I recently challenged myself to see if I actually could watch a movie and class it as a terrible one without enjoying it on it's own merits, as I have done for other really bad movies like Eragon and even Step Brothers.

On that note though, I did pass (or fail)the test.

There's a difference between using occasional clever references like on the Powerpuff Girls and making blatant references and even moment-for-moment references to shows and movies and musicals without any creative input at all, which was what a good percentage of Family Guy's jokes rely on.

Again, I agree with what you're saying. Maybe, I just can't explain why I enjoy Family Guy. I just think it's funny. Not genius. Some episodes are completely, completely unfunny. But I think the references are funny. Like that Great Space Coaster part where they get lost and can't get back. I thought it was funny. It may be stupid, it may be unoriginal, but I like it.

The people who can sit through entire episodes of Family Guy must be blessed/cursed with far more patience than I've ever had. I'll admit to having seen bits from the show that have made me laugh before, but the wheat to chaff ratio is just so insanely bad. For example, that Buzz Killington bullshit. The dude is boring and his name is a pun. That's the joke. Jesus Christ.

Besides, we have the internet now. Let's be generous and say that the Family Guy writers manage to crap out a watchable scene every couple of seasons; why the hell should I bother to sit through whole episodes to find it? God knows some idiot will forward it to me eventually anyway.

So before it even aired, this show had 1 22-episode season purchased, as well as 13 episodes of a second season. Now after less than a half-dozen episodes, FOX has picked up the rest if the second season, slating a total of 44 episodes.

Damn you, Firefly executives.

You guys are kind of embarrassingly similar to those you judge. Its a fine show for what it is. More importantly its existence does not negatively affect you in any real way.

People hate hipster for the quickness to judge and general snobby ways. Neo-hipsters try to define themselves by being the exact opposite.

Seriously, live and let die.

Maybe its because I expect more out of you. It reminds me of 'work friends' whose friendship largely consists of talking or more likely complaining about work when outside of it.

And can you really justify "I lasted 9 minutes.  God that was absolutely horrible." as a normal reaction to 'bad' comedic entertainment. And you are welcome to judge me for judging you, but I actively dont partake in the general hate/love fests that come along on this forum. But before I voice an opinion I independently form an opinion and have the conviction to back it up regardless of other peoples opinion and unless I have something new to offer the conversation I stay quiet.

But every once in a while (you said about once a year) it gets to me, and I feel like I should make a stand.

I don't think anybody here goes out of their way to avoid family guy. They don't need to because they never have to. I don't think anybody here will even go out of their way to say "I don't enjoy it". Infact, I bet nobody here even thinks about Family Guy, ever, unless it is mentioned by somebody else first. The thing about Family Guy is that is has had absolutely zero impact on our lives and we don't really care about the show whatsoever. But the topic came up on a forum we all frequent and are active contributors to. It's a pretty quiet forum.
We have opinions on the show and this is a good opportunity to share them because nobody here is sad enough to actually sit down with a friend and talk about how awful Family Guy is unless somebody else brings the topic up first.

Have you never talked about something you don't like to pass the time?
